Fire aboard Royal Caribbean Liner Cancels Voyage

Fire broke out aboard Royal Caribbean’s 916-foot cruise liner Grandeur of the Seas at approximately 3 a.m. Monday morning. The vessel, carrying 2,224 passengers and 796 crew en route to CoCo Cay, Bahamas, was roughly 35 nautical miles offshore.

The fire was contained to the third deck (of 11) of the 74,000-ton ship, and power, propulsion and communications continue to function without interruption.

Royal Caribbean said that all guests and staff have been accounted for, and no serious injuries have been reported.

Grandeur of the Seas was on a seven-night sailing that departed Baltimore, Maryland, on May 24, and had included port calls to Port Canaveral, Florida; CocoCay and Nassau, The Bahamas.

The Ship is docked in Freeport, Bahamas where it is currently under evaluation, according to the liner.

Royal Caribbean International said in a statement that the damage caused by the fire on Grandeur of the Seas will force the cancelation of the rest of the ship’s voyage. Royal Caribbean is currently working on making the necessary arrangements to return all guests to Baltimore.

Royal Caribbean said it will provide each guest with a full refund of the cruise fare and will give each guest a future cruise certificate for 100 percent of the cruise fare paid for their May 24, 2013, Grandeur of the Seas sailing.
