On Wednesday, 27 June 2012, Hamburg Süd celebrated the christening of its container ship “Santa Ines” at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME) in Geoje-City in Korea. Sponsor of the “Santa Ines” was Dr Marie Schnell, a daughter of Dr Arend Oetker.

The “Santa Ines” is the last newbuilding of a series of ten container ships, each of which has a slot capacity of 7,100 TEU and is fitted with 1,600 reefer container plugs. Following her delivery at DSME on 29 July, the “Santa Ines” is to be phased into Hamburg Süd’s service between Asia and South Africa/South America East Coast. The “Santa Ines” is named after a city in the Brazilian province of Bahia, west of the port of Salvador.

Newbuildings eight and nine of the current “Santa” series – the “Santa Ursula” and the “Santa Barbara” – have already been delivered but will not be christened until July and August 2012 respectively in their particular area of operation. The “Santa Ines” completes the group of more than 30 ships of the “Monte”, “Rio”, “Santa”, “Bahia” and “Cap” class which Hamburg Süd has had built at DSME in the last ten years. The first vessel, the “Monte Cervantes”, was delivered in July 2004.
