Minister Raitt Stresses Importance of Canadian Ports
The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, spoke of the important role played by ports in the economic well-being of Canadians in a speech to the 55th annual general meeting and conference of the Association of Canadian Port Authorities, hosted by the Nanaimo Port Authority.
Speaking to this year's conference theme of "Building partnerships," Minister Raitt said that the marine transportation system creates jobs and supports growth and prosperity for all Canadians while highlighting the importance of trade and collaboration with the United States on initiatives such as the Beyond the Border Action Plan.
“Our government is convinced that by working together, we are making Canada’s transportation system even safer and more secure while balancing the needs of our economy,” said Minister Raitt. “Through partnerships between government and the private sector, Canadians continue to realize the benefits of our strategic gateways and have the right environment for Canadian industry to grow and prosper.”
Minister Raitt noted the importance of the World-Class Tanker Safety System announced this year to strengthen the safety of tankers in Canada. Other steps taken by the Government of Canada further support sustainable transportation at ports, such as Clean Transportation Initiatives that address a concern that ports face of having too many trucks idling in queues. The Shore Power Technology for Ports Program that enables ships to turn off their diesel engines while docked and connected to an electric power supply at the port facility also illustrates how the Government of Canada is doing more to protect Canadians and communities while also protecting the environment.
The Association of Canadian Port Authorities is dedicated to the advocacy and advancement of Canadian ports. The conference brings together groups representing ports, shippers and related marine interests.
