Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd Set Up Operational Cooperation

Shipping industry majors Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk have signed an agreement for a new long-term operational collaboration called ‘Gemini Cooperation’, which will start in February 2025.The ambition is to deliver a flexible and interconnected ocean network with industry-leading reliability.The new cooperation between the companies will comprise a fleet pool of around 290 vessels with a combined capacity of 3.4 million containers (TEU). Bad Fuel Causes Engine Trouble on MSC Containership

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) said one of its containerships has had to pause its China-U.S. voyage after a fuel problem gave rise to engine problems on board the 366-meter vessel.The Panamanian-flagged containership MSC Ariane had to stop at sea on April 2 due to an engine issue caused by "bad quality of fuel", MSC said.Maersk, MSC's partner under the 2M Alliance, said a tugboat with spare parts has reached the vessel and began towing it toward Japan for repair. Contracted Rates to Fall Long-term Due to Conoravirus -Xeneta

Port Houston Box Volume Up 12%

Container volume at Port Houston surged in the first half of 2019, rising 12 percent compared to that period last year. According to the Executive Director Roger Guenther the port facilities have handled nearly 1.5 Million TEU through the first half of 2019.The Houston ship channel also said in a press release that , the Port Commission awarded a contract not to exceed $39.7 million to Archer Western Construction, the top-ranked proposer among four finalists. A total of 53 companies downloaded materials about the project.The planned expansion of the truck gate at Port Houston’s Barbours Cut Container Terminal is set to begin after approval of a contract for the work by the Port Commission, it said.The project consists of about 23 acres of new pavement at the existing Barbours Cut Terminal.

ZIM Cuts Q1 Net Loss

Hyundai Merchant Marine to Say Good Bye to 2M Alliance?

South Korea's largest shipping firm Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) is likely to part ways with the 2M Alliance which will expire in April 2020 and join  a new ocean alliance said a local media report.According to a report in Business Korea, the 2M Alliance (consists of Maersk Line and MSC) is disadvantageous to HMM as it is not a full member of the alliance. ZIM Revenue Up by 7.7% for Q2 2018

ZIM Integrated Shipping Services (ZIM) reported total revenues were $803.2 million in Q2 2018, compared to $745.7 million in Q2 2017, an increase of 7.7%. It  carried 772 thousand TEUs, an all-time record (reflecting a growth of 17.1% compared to Q2 2017).However, the operating cash flow was $52.6 million, compared to $88.9 million in Q2 2017.Eli Glickman, ZIM President & CEO, said: “Q2 2018 was characterized by the continued rise in fuel prices and chartering rates, as well as low freight rates, all with a negative impact on the results of carriers, including ZIM."Eli added: "In spite of these adverse circumstances, we were able to increase liftings, maintain exceptional service to our customers and record an adjusted EBIT margin above industry average.
