These salvage masters, divers, firefighters, naval architects, heavy lift operators and other salvage team members regularly go into harm’s way and consistently perform incredible feats. Public Meeting to Address NPREP Guidelines

Maritime industry leaders will convene in Washington, D.C. on June 19 with representatives of the relevant government agencies to have a dialogue addressing concerns with, and ways to improve, the recently published draft National Preparedness for Response Exercise Program (NPREP) guidelines. Preparing for the contingency of a maritime casualty has long been a priority of the industry, which has often been at the leading edge of improved standards and training. The public meeting will address concerns and issues of vital interest to many communities across the country. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 19, 2014, from 1-4 p.m. in Washington, D.C., Ronald Reagan International Trade Building, Polaris Suite.

T&T Salvage Names Garcia Assistant Director of Vessel Services

T&T Salvage, LLC has appointed Rebecca Garcia as Assistant Director of Vessel Services, primarily responsible for assisting the compliance team in finding customer-centric solutions to the latest regulatory requirements set forth by the OPA-90 regulations, while also identifying and introducing custom emergency management solutions to T&T’s global customer base. Garcia comes from a career at Svitzer Salvage and Ardent Global where she helped establish and develop the organization’s OPA-90 compliance program.

Working full-time with Donjon Marine Co., Inc. since 1982, John A. Witte, Jr. is currently Executive Vice President. He oversees the day-to-day operations of Donjon’s Marine Salvage, Demolition, Marine Transportation, Diving, Heavy Lift and Shipbuilding Operations. Witte is also responsible for Donjon’s Regulatory Compliance Program for all marine related activities and has served as Salvage Master on numerous Donjon Salvage projects since 1982. A past President of the American Salvage Association (ASA), Witte today serves as Vice President of the International Salvage Union (ISU).

How Difficult is it to Obtain a Jones Act Waiver?

In reality, it is a simple task to demystify the thought that it is easy to obtain such waivers. The fact that Senator Landrieu’s comments were not directed against any potential waiver of the Jones Act shows the controversy that Jones Act waivers can rise in the maritime and energy sectors. In reality, however, there exists a misconception amongst many about the ease of obtaining a waiver to the Jones Act. US Response Model for Salvage and Firefighting

As the dust settles on the 2014 implementation of the non-tank vessel response plan (VRP) regulations, the effective result is that all tank and non-tank vessels over 400 gross tons operating in US waters must meet the requirements of OPA 90, including the recently enacted Salvage and Marine Firefighting (SMFF) regulations. The SMFF regulations are the most prescriptive and stringent of their kind in the world and while only applicable in the U.S., the regulations are certain to have reaching international implications. There are five primary SMFF service providers (the “Core 5”) that have been vetted by the US Coast Guard for providing SMFF coverage in all US ports.

TITAN to Host American Salvage Association Fundraiser

ASA Mission Statement Revised to Expand Reach

The American Salvage Association has revised its mission statement to increase its area of influence beyond North America, complemented by a new logo that reflects the expanded direction. The new Mission Statement reads “The mission of the ASA is to be a unifying association of the commercial marine salvage industry, serving as the definitive spokesman for this industry in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere in North, Central and South America as well as the Caribbean Sea.” The updated logo keeps the same ocean blue and white color scheme of the previous one…

US Salvors Pass USCG Verifications

On April 18, Rear Admiral Anthony “Jack” Vogt, Assistant Commandant for Response Policy, released an update on the status of the most recent U.S. Salvage and Marine Firefighting (SMFF) industry verification initiative. According to the report, the Coast Guard has conducted 58 scenario-based SMFF verifications within the last year across 19 different Captain of the Port Zones, with 16 different vessel owners and operators. To date, all results have been found to be satisfactory and reflect compliance with the Coast Guard’s Salvage and Marine Firefighting regulations.
