Vado Gateway Container Terminal Opened
The international container terminal operating company APM Terminals (APMT) said it has opened a new container terminal in Vado Ligure, on the Italian Riviera, which will be capable of handling 900,000 TEUs of containerized cargo.APMT has a 50.1% share in the “Vado Gateway,” while Cosco Shipping Ports has a 40% share and Qingdao Port International has a 9.9% share. Global Container Port Demand to Rise

Black Sea Container Exports on the Rise
Ukraine-based Informall Business Group in its latest Black Sea Container Market review reports a rise of 8.70% in loaded containers handling in the Black Sea container ports of Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Russia and Georgia in 2018 as compared to 2017.Black Sea container terminals of the five countries handled 2927016 TEU in 2018, including empty containers, excluding transshipment. This review observes only full containers of the region – 2188153 TEU.In 2018, there was a laden container turnover increase in all countries of the Black Sea region. The highest growth was achieved by Ukraine and Georgia – 18,99% and 14,64%. At the same time, Bulgaria, Russia and Romania have achieved 4,52%, 3,94% and 0,35% growth of laden container turnover respectively.

Record-Low Volume Figures Continue Gothenburg Port
Container volumes at the Port of Gothenburg remain at historically low levels. Q3 figures show a fall of 28 per cent compared with the same period last year, even though the port has been free of industrial action and labour disputes. In contrast, other freight categories are doing well. Earlier this year, volume statistics for the first six months of 2017 clearly showed how the conflict between the Dockworkers’ Union and APM Terminals Gothenburg impacted negatively on container trade. India's Largest Container Port Trying to Recover from Cyber Attack
The National Cyber Security Coordinator Dr Gulshan Rai visited Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) to assess the impact of the global cyber attack that has disrupted the operations of one of the container terminals at the port. He, together with Chief Commissioner Customs and Excise, Chairman-JNPT and Inspector General-Cyber Maharashtra held discussions with the officials of GTI Terminal, DP World and officials of JNPT. JNPT handles container traffic through four terminals. One of the Terminal(GTI) is operated by APM Moller Maersk, a Danish company with headquarter at Copenhagen. Two other terminals - NSICT and NSIGT, are operated by DP World and the fourth terminal JNPCT is operated directly by JNPT.
Rotterdam Unions, Container Firms Reach Deal on Job Security
The trade unions FNV and CNV Vakmensen, the Rotterdam container companies and the Port of Rotterdam Authority concluded consultations on employment in the container industry. The trade unions will present the outcome of the negotiations to their members with favourable advice. The most important part of the negotiation result is that the companies involved will offer a job security guarantee until 1 July 2020, to those of their employees who already had an employment contract for an indefinite period by 1 January 2015 and who are covered by a CLA of the corresponding company. Furthermore, the Port Senior Fit Scheme will be extended to employees aged 60 years. It has also been agreed that the 120 employees of ailing RPS will be offered a customised solution.
Rotterdam Implements Paperless Container Transfers
In the near future, a physical Customs document will no longer be required to transfer containers from one Maasvlakte terminal to the other within the Port of Rotterdam. Participating terminals APMT, ECT and RWG have made agreements with the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration for a so-called ‘paperless transfer’ system, which, beginning July 1, 2016, will considerably reduce the administrative workload – particularly for shipping lines – and simplify the exchange of containers between Maasvlakte’s five deep-sea terminals.
APMT Prepares for 20,000 teu Ships on Pacific
APM Terminals, the port terminal operator arm of Danish shipping conglomerate AP Moller-Maersk A/S, has signed an agreement to enlarge 10 STS cranes at its Pier 400 facility in the Port of Los Angeles. The 10 STS cranes will be the tallest in service at any port in the United States, capable of handling ultra-large containerships with capacities of up to 20,000 TEUs, according to port terminal operator APM Terminals. The contract was signed at a ceremony held at the APM Terminals Pier 400 Los Angeles facility,the world’s largest proprietary container terminal, by representatives of APM Terminals and Shanghai-based ZPMC, which has been selected to perform the crane modifications on the terminal’s existing Noell STS cranes.
APM Terminals Readies Lázaro Cárdenas TEC2
APM Terminals (APMT) is continuing with its new deep-water semi-automated Lázaro Cárdenas Terminal 2 (TEC2) project, which represents an overall investment of US$900 million, despite the slow Latin American economic growth, and sluggish global container shipping growth rate. Once complete, TEC2 will have an annual throughput capacity of 1.2 million TEUs. Overall throughput at the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas increased 6 percent in 2015 to 1.05 million TEUs, following Manzanillo on Mexico’s east coast with 2.4 million TEUs handled in 2015, according to APM Terminals. APM Terminals said the fully built TEC2 will double the quayside to 1,485 meters, increase the number of STS cranes from seven to 15, and more than double annual throughput capacity to 4.1 million TEUs.
Greece Okay's China's Cosco Improved Bid
The state privatization fund Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) of Greece has accepted a “significantly improved” offer from China’s Cosco Group for the state’s majority stake in the Piraeus Port Authority (OLP). “HRADF’s board of directors accepted the improved offer made by COSCO Group (Hong Kong) Ltd in the context of the tender for the sale of the 67 percent of Piraeus Port Authority (PPA) shares,” an HRADF statement said. The Chinese group submitted on Wednesday an improved binding offer of 22 euros (US$24) per share which amounts to 368.5 million euros (US$401m) for the controlling 67 percent stake in PPA, according to HRADF’s announcement.
APMT Takes Stake in Cartagena Terminal
APM Terminals and Colombian-based port and terminal operating company, Compañia de Puertos Asociados S.A. (Compas S.A.) have finalized the incorporation of Cartagena Container Terminal Operator (CCTO), a new joint venture which will manage and operate Compas S.A.’s existing multipurpose facility in Cartagena, Colombia. APM Terminals will hold a 51% majority share in the operation, which includes annual throughput capacities of 250,000 TEUs and 1.5 million tons of general cargo. “We are proud to expand the APM Terminals Global Terminal Network into this important South American market in partnership with such a highly respected business as Compas SA, and we look forward to building upon their achievements in the port of Cartagena” said APM Terminals CEO Kim Fejfer. Svitzer Bags 30-year Towing Deal in Costa Rica
Svitzer has entered a 30-year terminal towage contract to provide marine services for the new APMT Moin Container Terminal in Costa Rica, starting from the third quarter of 2017. In addition to supplying marine service, Svitzer will provide three 70TBP ASD tugs (two with FiFi 1), one pilot vessel and a maintenance barge for the Moin Container Terminal. Svitzer will also invest in local crew to train pilots and tug masters in its new training center in the Bahamas for the Moin Container Terminal. “The agreement with APMT was the result of a lengthy process where Svitzer assisted in all phases of the marine solution including simulations of the towage operations, determining size and layout of the turning basin and defining the optimal specifications of the tugboats.
APMT to buy Spanish Container Terminals Operator
APM Terminals has reached an agreement with Perez y Cia to acquire their majority stake in the Barcelona-based Grup Maritim TCB and its maritime services’ container terminal portfolio in Europe and Latin America. Grup Maritim TCB has 11 container terminals with an annual throughput capacity of 4.3 million TEUs and an estimated annual container volume of 3.5 million TEUs. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the year and is subject to certain conditions precedent, including relevant approvals. Terms and price were not disclosed. APM Terminals Pipavav Handles 10,000 TEU vessel
Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd (APM Terminals Pipavav) announced the successful berthing of the largest container vessel with capacity of approximately 9,971 TEUs in the history of the port. Maersk Saltoro is the largest container ship (981 feet long) ever to call at APM Terminals, one of western India’s fastest growing gateway ports. "The berthing of Maersk Saltoro, at nearly 10,000 TEUs capacity, reaffirms APM Terminals Pipavav’s operational capabilities and infrastructure,” said Keld Pedersen, managing director of APMT Pipavav, in a written statement. The berthing of Maersk Saltoro is yet another testimony of the infrastructure capabilities APM Terminals Pipavav has built over the years in handling large vessels and cargo.
