Austal Graduates Four-Year Apprentices

Austal USA honored 15 graduates of Austal’s cutting-edge four-year apprenticeship program.

Part of Austal’s growing talent pool – 3,000 and counting. Austal USA honored 15 graduates of Austal’s cutting-edge four-year apprenticeship program yesterday at a ceremony held in the new Office Complex Multi-Use Room. This was recently the same backdrop for a ribbon-cutting ceremony which celebrated the official opening of three new buildings at Austal’s state-of-the-art shipbuilding operation in Mobile, Ala. The graduates received their certificates of completion and designation as Department of Labor Class A Journeymen.

Austal Graduates 48 4-Yr Apprentices

Austal USA combined two classes to graduate a total of 48 members of Austal’s cutting-edge four-year apprenticeship program yesterday at a formal ceremony held at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center. The graduates received their certificates of completion and designation as Department of Labor Class A Journeymen. The graduates consisted of 22 electrical journeymen, 9 pipe fitting journeymen, 4 fitout journeymen, and 13 fabrication journeymen. Of the 48 graduating apprentices, 18 have already been promoted to leadership positions.

US Awards Grant for Maritime Apprenticeships

Foss Maritime announced today a partnership to establish the curriculum for a new marine engineering apprenticeship program, and to sponsor several applicants each year. Seattle Central College, Seattle Maritime Academy, the Maritime Institute of Technology & Graduate Studies-Pacific Maritime Institute and the Workboat Academy have received a $5 million American Apprenticeship Innovation Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to help build a new apprenticeship program. Through the grant, more 150 engineers will be trained over the next five years, both in Seattle and Baltimore. The engineering program will mirror Workboat Academy's deck apprenticeship, now in its 10th year.

Austal Graduates 38 Apprentices

Austal USA honored graduates of Austal’s cutting-edge four-year apprenticeship program with a banquet at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center in Mobile, Alabama. The 38 graduates received their certificates of completion and designation as Department of Labor Class A Journeymen. They were joined by their supervisors, instructors and many of Austal USA’s executive and human resources staff in celebrating this momentous occasion. The graduating class consisted of 8 electrical journeymen, 6 fitout journeymen, 10 pipe fitting journeymen, and 13 fabrication journeymen.

Shipyard's Apprenticeship Program Offers First Grads Since 1993

On Friday, August 17, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard graduated its first Cooperative Apprenticeship Program (CAP) class since 1993, when the program was halted by the threat of base closure and subsequent reductions in work force. The nine graduates began as a class of 12 in 1997 and have all accepted permanent, journeyman-level positions on the yard. Two years ago, each student received an associate's degree from a participating technical college. "A real bright spot in this program is the growth that we've seen in the past few years," said Captain Vernon "Tom" Williams, USN, the Shipyard's commander. "It has increased in size from 12 in the first class, to 49 in 1998, 95 in 1999, 75 in 2000, and 68 in 2001.

In June 2002, the fast expanding Austal USA yard, in Mobile, AL, introduced an apprenticeship program to its recruitment efforts. Since then, this program has introduced three classes to its shipbuilding curriculum, which is recognized by the U.S. Labor Board, and has successfully entered into its second year of operation. Shortly after Austal USA opened its new aluminum shipbuilding facility in February 2001, they joined forces with the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce and Bishop State Community College to formulate a 2-year program: Recent high school graduates of Mobile and Baldwin County would be hired as full-time Austal employees (working 34 hours a week in our purpose-built facility) as part of an apprenticeship program.

Engine Manufacturer's Eduction Program Interests White House

Representatives of Tognum America Inc., a subsidiary of Tognum AG, were invited to meet with representatives of the White House and the U.S. Department of Education, to discuss a planned apprenticeship program for high school students in Aiken County, S.C. The event was designed to be a roundtable discussion of ideas regarding programs aimed at improving education and helping more young Americans gain vocational training and enter the workforce without a college degree. Known for its technological expertise in the area of power and propulsions systems, Tognum has now added an education program to its portfolio through a new program that will kick off this fall at its MTU Aiken Plant.

MTU Launch Minnesota Youth Apprenticeship Program

MTU Onsite Energy Corp., a Rolls-Royce Power Systems company providing diesel and gas-based power system solutions, has announced the launch of a new youth apprentice program. The vocational training program is designed for high school juniors and seniors and will combine hands-on training in a manufacturing setting with classroom instruction. The program will begin this fall, in partnership with Mankato Area Public Schools, South Central College, Kato Cable, a full service cable assembly company, and EI Microcircuits, an electronics design and manufacturing company.

Austal’s U.S. operation consists of more than 4,000 employees supporting the design, construction and sustainment of two U.S. Navy programs, the 127-meter, trimaran Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and the 103-meter, catamaran high-speed troop and equipment transport known as the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV). Austal has block-buy contracts in place for both programs totaling over $5 billion. In the past year, it has  delivered the Jackson (LCS 6), USNS Fall River (JHSV 4) and USNS Trenton (JHSV 5).

HSOG Launches Apprenticeship Program

HS Ocean Group (HSOG ) celebrates National Apprenticeship Week by committing to long-term Apprenticeship program. The marine services specialist HSOG has launched a formal Apprenticeship training program following the successful progression of its first ever apprentices. The global company – which has offices in 12 countries across four continents – engaged six apprentices at its McTays Shipyard and Warbreck Engineering facilities in Merseyside last year. The apprentices are training across a range of disciplines including steelwork, fabrication, mechanical fitting, machining and engineering. Lee Foster, HSOG Chief Operating Officer, said, “We are delighted to announce our Apprenticeship programme to tie in with UK National Apprenticeship Week 2014.

Cammell Laird Welcomes New Apprentice Group

Merseyside engineering firm Cammell Laird announced its largest ever intake of apprentices since it restarted its apprenticeship program in 2008. Birkenhead-based Cammell Laird has taken on 22 apprentices working across a range of skills which brings the total number within the business to 71. Around 50 apprentices have graduated into highly skilled, qualified tradesmen over the past five years with Cammell Laird and are still actively employed with the business. Last year, Cammell Laird recruited 18 apprentices and had a total of 64 working for the company.

Shipyard Lays Keel of 14th Product Tanker in Philadelphia Yard

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard (Oslo: AKPS), a leading U.S. commercial shipyard, has held a ceremonial keel laying for Ship 018, the 14th product tanker being built at the yard. The small ceremony was conducted with the most recent class of the shipyard’s Apprenticeship Program and two apprentice graduates who have risen to the position of supervisor. The Apprenticeship Program is a three year, accredited program administered by the shipyard that provides a combination of classroom and on-the-job training to create the next generation of shipbuilders.

Newport News Shipbuilding's Apprentice School to partner Old Dominion University

The Signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Apprentice School and Old Dominion University (ODU) will take place tomorrow (23rd April) at 3101 Washington Ave. in downtown Newport News for offering a bachelor's degree program in mechanical and electrical engineering. The Apprentice School is the only registered apprenticeship program in the country to offer a bachelor's degree as part of its academic instruction program, thanks to a partnership with ODU. Nautronix Inspire Young People into the Industry

Nautronix gave young people across Aberdeen City and Shire an insight in to the oil and gas industry and the exciting career opportunities available to them. Working with Coaching Training Consultancy Ltd, (C-T-C) and their SCIP program, Nautronix invited 14 pupils aged between 16 and 17 from St Machar, Dyce and Inverurie Academies to take part in the Nautronix workshop. The SCIP program aims to support fourth-sixth year pupils who are looking for a job or an apprenticeship program after leaving school.

Austal USA honored the second set of graduates of our four-year apprenticeship program with a banquet in Mobile, Ala. The 21 graduates honored at this banquet received their certificates of completion and designation as Department of Labor Class A Journeymen. President and Chief Operating Officer, Joseph J. Rella, was the key speaker at the celebration. Rella stated, “The apprentice training program at Austal challenges the students both academically and practically. The program develops skilled craftsmen and women well prepared to build the innovative ships here at Austal.

BAE Systems Seeks 710 Apprentices for 2015

BAE Systems in the U.K said it will take on 710 apprentices in 2015, the highest intake in the company’s history. Next year's intake surpasses the record set in the previous year by 142 places and includes 45 places for apprentices who will eventually join companies in BAE Systems' supply chain or work in local engineering companies. The latter are funded under the government's Employer Ownership Program. The new recruits - two-thirds of whom will be employed in engineering-related roles - will work across 14 of BAE Systems’ aerospace, security and defense sites around the U.K.

The Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Lilianne Ploumen, and a Dutch Trade Delegation visited Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) on Tuesday, July 8, 2014. The goal was to get an impression of the way South African and Dutch companies and entrepreneurs are working together. In addition, the newly qualified pupils from DSCT’s in-house Apprentice Training Center received their certificates from the minister. All qualified artisans, as they now are, are offered a job at Damen’s South African shipyard.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) apprises that it has hosted Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., for a tour of The Apprentice School at the company's Newport News Shipbuilding division. The visit provided Kaine an opportunity to meet with shipyard and Apprentice School leaders and discuss the importance of Career Technical Education (CTE) programs as an alternative to traditional four-year colleges. Bollinger Promotes Fanguy, McDonough

Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., has promoted two senior department heads at Bollinger’s headquarters in Lockport, La. Dennis Fanguy has been appointed vice president, engineering and Robert McDonough has been named vice president and general manager of Bollinger’s new construction division at Lockport. Fanguy’s shipbuilding career was launched in 1980 at Halter Marine, where he served as chief electrical engineer while earning a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of New Orleans at night. He joined Bollinger in 1984 as an electrical project engineer and has risen through tasks including: chief project engineer; chief engineer; director of program management, and technical director.

Austal Honors Future Leaders

On the evening of September 2, 2009, Austal’s US operation in Mobile, Ala., honored the first graduates of its four-year apprenticeship program. The graduates honored at this banquet received their certificates of completion and designation as Department of Labor Class A Journeymen. Austal USA’s President and Chief Operating Officer, Joseph J. Rella, was the key speaker at the celebration. Rella stated, “the apprentice training does more than ensure skill sets that far exceed industry standards, the program cultivates our future leaders in the organization. It is essential for a shipyard to continually develop its new entrants into the workforce. The program is certified by the US Department of Labor, Ala.

SeaKing Invests in Sector-specific Training

Merseyside industrial engineering firm SeaKing Electrical said it has undergone a major investment in staff training in a bid to drive growth in the marine, offshore and windfarm sectors. The Birkenhead-based company has invested across a number of areas including offshore survival training and working at heights. Staff have undergone rigorous courses at the Offshore Survival Centre at Blackpool and The Fylde College, which is the only site on the U.K.'s west coast to deliver offshore survival training programs.

Philly Shipyard Lays Keel for Kinder Morgan Product Tanker

Philly Shipyard, Inc. (PSI), the wholly-owned U.S. subsidiary of Philly Shipyard ASA, held a ceremonial Keel Laying for the third product tanker in a four vessel order for American Petroleum Tankers (APT), a Kinder Morgan, Inc. subsidiary. Keeping with long held shipbuilding tradition, coins were placed on one of the keel blocks before the 650 ton unit was lowered into place in the dry dock. Representatives from Philly Shipyard and Kinder Morgan were in attendance to place the coins as a sign of good fortune and safe travels.
