How do you handle communication on your vessel? If you are like many others, you probably use handheld two-way marine VHF radios. That, or simply yelling.There are several inherent issues with using handheld radios for marine communication. Having to push a button to talk means that you cannot use that hand for important work activities, like winching a line or turning the wheel. Since you have to wait to push the button, you can waste valuable seconds when a crewmate needs help or your ship is about to ram into the dock.

Inmarsat: The Future of IoT in Logistics

Unreliable communication networks may render logistics businesses unable to capture full value from the Internet of Things (IoT), says Inmarsat. Top three challenges to successful IoT deployments in transportation sector: IoT skills (54 per cent), integrating IoT with existing systems (43%) and connectivity (40%). ZF Marine Opens New North America Commercial Craft Center of Competence

The new facility has dedicated transmission and thruster repair facilities, and larger warehouse and training areas. ZF Marine has a long standing presence in Louisiana, opening their first location in the city of St. Rose in 1996. The ever increasing customer base combined with the addition of the commercial thruster product line in 2009 resulted in the need to create a larger physical presence in the region. A comprehensive search of the region resulted in ZF finding a new home at 677 Time Saver Avenue in Elmwood, Louisiana. ZF Marine’s new facility is three times the size of its previous location. The new facility not only houses dedicated transmission and thruster repair facilities, but also a significantly larger warehouse area.

CalAmp Helps Navico Enable Wireless Connectivity

Wireless products, services and solutions provider CalAmp said its enhanced LMU-4530 telematics devicehas been chosen to support Navico’s new cloud-enabled GoFree Connected Vessel program to monitor onboard engine, sensor and navigation data. JLT Mobile Computers Selected by DCT Gdansk

JLT Mobile Computers has delivered 47 of its JLT VERSO+ 10 rugged mobile vehicle computers with the most compact form factor in its class to the new T2 deep-water terminal at DCT Gdansk in Poland. Located in the heart of the Baltic, DCT Gdansk is Poland’s largest container facility, and the only deep-water terminal in the Baltic Sea region. The rugged mobile vehicle computers, supplied by IT systems engineering company and JLT partner Autepra, have been installed on Kalmar T2 terminal tractors. Running industry leading Navis N4 Terminal Operating System (TOS) software, they form part of a larger development program undertaken by DCT to open a second 650 m long, deep-water berth at the T2 terminal, which will double the handling capacity of DCT Gdansk to 3M TEU per year.

Port of Oakland Plans for Terminal Closure

The Port of Oakland has set its plan to move containerized cargo once a marine terminal closes March 31. The Port said today its Continuity Plan will keep trade flowing and prevent vessel diversions to other ports. The plan addresses the impending shutdown of Outer Harbor Terminals LLC, formerly known as Ports America Outer Harbor Terminals LLC. The terminal operator has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and announced it will leave Oakland. The Port said its Continuity Plan calls for ships that use Outer Harbor Terminal to relocate to berths at adjacent terminals in Oakland. It said terminals will add labor where necessary and open gates nights and weekends to accommodate additional cargo.

FUSION-Link Remote Control App. Launched

B&G Debuts Wireless Pilot Control

B&G, a leader in the manufacture of instruments and marine electronics for sailing, announced today the release of the compact Wireless Pilot Controller. Providing complete control to sailors, no matter where they are on the boat, the new Wireless Pilot Controller is comprised of a small and lightweight waterproof Bluetooth base station with micro-C connections, has pairings for up to four remotes, and is compatible with B&G Triton and H5000 Pilot systems. Liebherr to Debut 5-Axle Mobile Crane

Liebherr will be showing its new 160-tonne mobile crane LTM 1160-5.2 at the Intermat 2015 in Paris, France. This crane on a five-axle chassis was presented to the public for the first time at the Conexpo Con/Agg 2014 exhibition in Las Vegas (USA). It is the successor to the LTM 1160-5.1. The load capacity of the new LTM 1160-5.2 has been increased by around 20-25 % compared to its predecessor whilst the telescopic boom has remained at the same length of 62 m. The vehicle width has been reduced from 3 m to 2.75 m. That means that not only it is easier to drive on public roads but also considerably better on constricted sites. The superstructure of the new LTM 1160-5.2 is powered by the engine in the crane chassis using a mechanical shaft.
