First Subsea, part of the First Tech Group based in Aberdeen, has won the inter-array cables protection contract from DEME at the Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) offshore wind farm (OWF).The cable protection system will be designed to protect the cable during installation and during the operating lifespan of the wind farm.The windfarm has been developed by EDF Renewables and Irish electricity company ESB, which now has a 50% stake in the project.Neart na Gaoithe will consist of 54 turbines and will be located in the North Sea approximately, 15km off the coast of Fife in south-east Scotland. Norwegian shipyard Ulstein Verft has contracted the compatriot supplier of marine coolers for all types of vessels, Hydroniq Coolers, to deliver the seawater cooling system to the cable laying vessel (CLV) Nexans Aurora.The Pleat coolers will provide cooling of the vessel’s main engine and auxiliary systems through the use of seawater. Hydroniq Coolers has not disclosed the value of the contract.The patented Pleat is a module-based titanium cooler for seawater to freshwater, with design pressure 6 bars and design temperature of 0-95°C.“Users of the Pleat benefits from long service intervals, which is an advantage for vessels that operate offshore for long periods at a time.

The Irish power grid operator EirGrid has awarded NKT a service contract for the interconnector connecting Ireland and Great Britain.The cable and cable accessories supplier to the energy sector has been awarded a five-year service agreement by the Irish power grid operator EirGrid for cable related services including repair works for the East West Interconnector.The 200 kV HVDC power cable with capacity of 500 MW between Ireland and Great Britain is connecting the countries power grid ensuring the high transmission security needed to power modern life.For NKT, the agreement marks the first contract including the company’s recently launched 10 days vessel mobilization guarantee.

Royal IHC, the supplier of equipment, vessels and services for the offshore and dredging markets, has signed a contract with China’s Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co (ZPMC) to support the installation and commissioning of the J-Lay system on ZPMC’s multipurpose vessel JSD6000 in Changxing, China.The J-Lay system was delivered by IHC in April 2019 after one of the most complex mobilization operations ever seen in the North East of England.As part of this new contract, IHC will be responsible for the design and build of the stinger, the installation and commissioning of the pipelay system, as well as its ongoing preservation and maintenance…

Tekmar Energy, the developer and manufacturer of sub-sea cable protection systems for the renewable energy industry, announced that international marine contractor Van Oord has selected the patented Tekmar Cable Protection System (CPS) TekLink Mechanical Latch for Windpark Fryslân.According to a press note from the Tekmar Group Company, said Windpark Fryslân is a 382MW near-shore windfarm comprising 89 wind turbines. Norwegian energy company Equinor has contracted Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian to supply the submarine inter-array cable system for the 816-MW Empire Wind project off the coast of New York.Prysmian will provide the 66kV insulated array cables and ancillaries that will transmit power from the wind turbines which will have a capacity in the range of 10-15MW.The cable system will undergo continuous fabrication at Prysmian’s centres of excellence in Montereau (France) and Nordenham (Germany) and its completion is expected in the summer of 2022 and the final installation in 2023 or 2024.The construction of the cable system’s power cores…

French cables manufacturer Nexans has signed a framework agreement with Denmark’s global offshore wind giant Ørsted A/S and New England utility Eversource Energy to take part in the offshore wind farm development in North America.According to the provider of cabling and connectivity solutions, the agreement will reinforce their long-term partnership and will result in Nexans having the opportunity to provide up to 1,000 km of subsea high voltage export cables for Ørsted’s offshore wind farms in North America.The first delivery is expected by 2022 and the agreement extends until 2027, it said.“Our partnership with Ørsted and Eversource will accelerate the energy transition in North America and bring Nexans’ industry-leading subsea cable technology to the U.S.…

Energy regulator Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) has been "unable to approve" plans for two huge subsea cables to take energy from the Scottish islands to the mainland.The transmission links from Shetland and the Western Isles were proposed by Scottish and Southern Energy Networks (SSEN) to connect planned new wind farms on the islands to the national grid.In March 2019 Ofgem said it was minded to approve the estimated £709 million link.The proposal from SSEN for a 600MW transmission link was based on the largest planned project, Viking Energy Wind Farm, securing subsidies through the UK Government’s Autumn Contracts for Difference (CfD) auction.The award of these subsidies would have provided confidence that the wind farm is likely to progress…

Italian cable manufacture Prysmian Group has secured a contract with turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE).The scope covers low voltage cables and assemblies for nacelles and low voltage cables for towers, Prysmian said. UK-based Tekmar Energy has been selected as the cable protection system (CPS) and hang off supplier for the 120-MW Formosa I Phase II offshore wind project in Taiwanese waters.A press note from the company announced that it has received the order from subsea power cable provider JDR Cables, part of TFKable Group.Tekmar will be providing approximately 60 cable protection systems and a further 60 hang off clamps which hold the subsea cable in place within the turbine transition piece.Formosa 1 Phase 2 is a project located 6km from the shore of Taiwan, consisting of 20 turbines and will provide a total of 122 MW in water depth of approximately 15-30m.

The global offshore wind cable market is estimated to grow at CAGR above 16% over the forecast time frame 2019 to 2026 and reach the market value around $3 billion by 2026.The demand for offshore wind cables has seen significant development due to the paradigm shift towards fresh renewable techniques with increasing consciousness of carbon emission limits, said a report by Acumen Research and Consulting."Offshore wind turbines are rapidly growing, with a higher capacity production more than onshore wind generation. Oceanteam Solutions, a provider of complete set of equipment suitable for offshore cable laying, announced that it has been awarded a contract for supplying an undisclosed client with a cable lay spread.The contract lasts until mid-October 2019, with extension options,  said the Netherlands-based company in a press notification.The scope includes the hire of one of Oceanteam’s 2000t and 4000t turntables, two 10t tensioners and technicians for operations and maintenance activities.The cable lay spread will be used on-board of the clients’ dedicated cable lay vessel, it said. “It is the first offshore wind project we execute together with this client, and we look forward to a good partnership on this and future projects.
