Eastern Completes First Ollis Class Vessel for Staten Island Ferry

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. (ESG) announced it has completed the first of three new Staten Island “Ollis Class” ferries for the City of New York Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Staten Island Ferry Division. The MV SSG Michael H. Ollis, Hull 219, departed ESG’s Port St. Joe, Fla. facility fully certified and passenger ready.Dann Ocean Towing’s Colonel is towing the ferry on a 12-dray trip to New York City. Upon arrival, the ferry will be staged at Caddell Dry Dock for cleaning and another round of trials and training.

It was also during this year that Bouchard Transportation Co. formed its long-standing current relationship with Caddell Dry Dock & Repair Co.—a partnership--to this day--is still based on trust, loyalty and family heritage. USS Slater is Homeward Bound

USS Slater, the last Destroyer Escort afloat in America, will soon return to her home berth in Albany, New York. Launched in 1944, Slater served gallantly in both the Battle of the Atlantic and the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. In 1951, Slater was transferred to Greece under the Military Defense Assistance Program. Renamed Aetos (Eagle), she served as an Hellenic Navy training ship for forty years. In 1993, after deactivation, she was brought back to the United States by a group of former Destroyer Escort Sailors.

Where in the World is USS Slater?

To answer, USS Slater is at Caddell Dry Dock and Repair in Staten Island. Typically, the ship is open to the public in Albany near the beginning of April. This season, after several years of fundraising, the ship has been taken to drydock for repairs to her hull. It’s been over 20 years since the ship has been in drydock, so this project is due. Drydocking is being funded by private individuals and foundations as no government funding is being used for this project. In fact, the Destroyer Escort Historical Museum…

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) recently presented Crowley Maritime subsidiary Houston-based TITAN Salvage with its Hurricane Sandy Award for exhibiting “unprecedented support” immediately following the storm that devastated much of the Northeastern coast in late October 2012. Senesco Delivers Largest Commercial Floating Dry Dock

Senesco Marine of North Kingstown, R.I. launched the largest commercial floating dry dock in the Northeast United States on May 7, 2013. Senesco built the dry dock for Caddell Dry Dock and Repair Co. of Staten Island, N.Y. The dry dock has a lifting capacity of 7,300 LT, is 420 feet long, and has a 100-foot wide open pontoon deck between its 30-foot tall wing walls. JMS Naval Architects (JMS) of Mystic, Conn. designed the dry dock for Caddell to accommodate large tank barges, tugs, workboats and Coast Guard Cutters.

Polymers Avert Pollution Threat

Among the more compelling news photos published following the landfall of Hurricane Sandy was that of the 184' tanker John B. Caddell run aground onto a Staten Island street by tidal flooding. That the tanker required heavy lifting to return it to sea was only part of the problem. A layer of bunker fuel shrouded the vessel's flooded engine room, creating a contaminated work area. C.I.Agent Solutions assisted with remediation so salvage work could move forward. C.I.Agent Solutions' solidifying polymer granules and EVAC Filtration System were used to help clean the contaminated engine room.

A Boon to Shipbuilding

Having detailed instructions for each shipbuilding task and precise sequencing of the workflow is creating efficiencies and reducing rework at shipyards on the east and west coasts of the US. The work packs that Senesco Marine’s tradesmen are working from provide instructions—including checks and balances and dimensions—for each step of the process. “The person cutting the angles to go on panels has a cut sheet with instructions on how to cut every angle,” explains Joe Bush, VP Operations at Senseco Marine in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

Hurricane 'Sandy' pollution response US Coast Guard unified command completes tank vessel lift on Staten Island, NY. The tank vessel John B. Caddell is a 184-foot tanker ship that washed up on Staten Island as a result of high winds and floodwaters from Hurricane Sandy. The Caddell posed both an environmental and navigational threat to the New York waterways. The Hurricane Sandy Pollution Response Unified Command lifted and transported the vessel from Front Street in Staten Island, thus removing that pollution threat to the environment.

Senesco, Caddell Sign Contract for a Dry Dock

Senesco Marine, North Kingstown Rhode Island has signed a contract for the construction of a 120 x 420-ft., 7300 long ton hauling capacity Dry Dock, with Caddell Dry Dock and Repair Company, Inc., of Staten Island, NY. The announcement was made by Senesco Marine, North Kingstown, Rhode Island, Tom Johnson, Vice President Business Development, “We are pleased to announce the contract award by Caddell Dry Docks & Repair Co’s. new dry dock. Steve Kalil, President of Caddell’s stated that after Senesco delivered a new dry dock in July of 2011 it was easy to execute the second new build given the quality and workmanship we experienced throughout the construction.

MARAD $14.7M in Grants for Small Shipyards

On April 15, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced $14.7m in grant awards to help improve 17 small shipyards in 16 states. The funds will help these shipyards become more competitive by purchasing modern equipment and training workers. “These grants will help modernize small shipyards and strengthen our economy by making sure we maintain the ability to build and repair ships in the United States,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Small shipyards are an important part of our nation’s shipbuilding industry,” said David Matsuda, Acting Maritime Administrator. SI Ferry Set for Repairs

It has been reported that New York City’s Department of Transportation has signed a contract with Caddell Dry Dock and Repair. The Staten Island based company was awarded a $5.96 million contract to repair the Andrew J. Barberi, the ferry that crashed into a concrete pier in October. The company has stated that it will repair the ferry by May 15.

Anyone Want to Restore a Tugboat?

You'd think it would be easy to start a tugboat museum. First, get an old tugboat. Clean-up some rust with a pad of coarse steel wool, slap-on a coat of paint, and presto, you're ready to sit in the booth and sell tickets. Everyone would applaud your efforts because, first, everyone loves tugboats and all they represent - solid construction and earnest purpose, hard work and benevolent contributions to civilization. And second, because old tugboats, all spiffied-up, are handsome sights, an alluring environmental decoration wherever they're found. And third, because the design of tugboats, like most of society's tools, has undergone great change, and the old ones are dying-off fast. You'd think everyone would support your labors at preserving a noble cultural heritage.

What is in John Garner's Pocket

You don't really know a boat until she's hauled. Plying her trade on the water, her best half's submerged out of sight. We think we recognize her - "oh, there's Odin," or "Shelby Rose," or "Twintube" - but what are we seeing? The lines of the deckhouse, the shape and placement of the wheelhouse, the arrangement of the stacks? These are the parts known as the superstructure - "super," in this case, meaning simply "upon." It's a little like saying we recognize someone by his hat. The boat's defining structure starts at the main deck and goes downward from there. What little we see of it is low on the horizon. There's the deck's line, along with a smattering of bulwarks.

OpSail 2000: Parade Of Tall Ships Graces New York’s Waters

Founded in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, Operation Sail (OpSail) has since found its way back to New York Harbor for significant events such as the Bicentennial celebration in 1976 and the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. MR/EN was invited to step aboard the historic Schooner Wavertree, prior to OpSail 2000. By Regina P. Stepping aboard the historic Schooner Wavertree docked at New York's South Street Seaport, one would feel instantly immersed by the constant whirring of drills, hammering and workers being pulled up onto the vessel's masthead. No, it's not a group of 19th Century shipbuilders, but a modern-day group of individuals, some of who are volunteers, working to prepare the historic Schooner for its OpSail appearance.
