Two vessels from CMA CGM, the world's third-largest container shipping line, have travelled through the Suez Canal, the authority that runs the waterway said on Tuesday, in a sign the disruptions linked to the Gaza war could be easing. While the Suez Canal provides the fastest link between Asia and Europe, since November 2023, shipping companies have had to take much longer routes because Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi militants attacked commercial vessels, saying they were acting in solidarity with Palestinians during warfare in Gaza.CMA CGM did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

With Glosten at their side as vessel designer, MBARI considered three types of ships for their new project. The Western Flyer was a small waterplane area twin hull (SWATH), but the parties agreed on a monohull design for the new vessel. In 2021, Freire Shipyard won the bid to build the vessel, and R/V David Packard came to life. There is no “I” in TeamWill Moon…

IMO: Stick to Your [Sustainability] Guns

Copyright Yellow Boat/AdobeStock

IMO has kicked the can of sustainability down the road by delaying the Net Zero Framework. It was a strange retreat. It looked like there would be a useable Framework to reduce emissions, but at the meeting the US fought its implementation tooth and nail and threatened other states if they accepted it. Some countries buckled under and, with the loss of US support, the oil majors saw their chance to jump ship too. Then ABS expressed doubt about the Framework, and DNV also mumbled…

Is There a Viable LNG to Ammonia Fuel Pathway?

DNV-Approved Tank Installed on first Aurora Class Vessel (Source: Höegh Autoliners)

Is LNG to ammonia a viable pathway for helping shipowners get to net zero? From an engine point of view there is a pathway, but there are two points to consider, says Lars Tingbjerg Danielsen, Two-Stroke Promotion Manager – Newbuildings at Everllence. First, the case where an engine is capable of burning both methane and ammonia; second the case where an engine starts its service burning methane and then later switches to burning ammonia.“If we look at the idea of an engine capable of burning both methane and ammonia, it is our belief that this is not a request from the market.
