Gassco Examines Feasibility of CO2 Shipping

Gassco has commissioned Knutsen OAS Shipping and Larvik Shipping to study transport of CO2 by ship in connection with the Norwegian government’s full-scale project for managing this greenhouse gas. In cooperation with Gassnova, Gassco has earlier studied CO2 handling chains. “The transport study will help to ensure that the government’s ambition of realising at least one full-scale CO2 facility by 2020 can be met,” says Gassco CEO Frode Leversund. The CO2 chain is being addressed by industrial players. Gassnova has assigned studies of the relevant capture locations to Norcem in Brevik, Yara at Herøya and Klemetsrud EGE in Oslo, while Gassco and Statoil are responsible for the transport and storage aspects respectively.

Shipping emissions 17% of global CO2

Shipping could be responsible for 17% of global CO2 emissions in 2050 if left unregulated, according to a new scientific study conducted by European Parliament Directorate General for Internal Policies. Any agreement at the Paris Climate Summit must therefore send a clear signal to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that CO2 reduction targets and measures for shipping are needed to help keep warming below dangerous levels, according to NGOs Seas At Risk, Transport & Environment (T&E) and the Marine Conservation Society. Emissions from shipping, along with aviation, are the elephant in the COP21 negotiations room, the groups said in a dossier presented to delegates arriving for the IMO’s 2015 Assembly in London.

Shipping Braces for post-Paris Pollution Tax

Brussels sets end-2016 deadline for CO2-cutting proposals by IMO. The shipping industry expects to be stung by a carbon levy as momentum building from climate talks in Paris starting this month makes a cut to its greenhouse gas emissions likely. Any tax - either a levy based on fuel use by diesel-driven ships or a market based mechanism - would add to rising costs for the industry, which transports 90 percent of world trade. A draft Paris text makes scant mention of reducing CO2 from marine bunker fuels. Yet ship industry sources say some form of taxation is expected to come in the wake of any deal at the Nov.30-Dec. 11 summit. "We do expect that sooner or later shipping will be regulated on CO2…

From Fire to Emissions, Ferry Debates Heat Up

Firefighting led a stream of topical debate at trade association Interferry’s 40th annual conference in Copenhagen last week – but not before a record 342 delegates came under fire from a leading Green politician claiming that ‘shipping is currently one of the unaddressed areas of air pollution’. Michael Cramer, German chair of the European Parliament’s transport and tourism committee, delivered a stinging opening address demanding that the ferry and shipping sectors become more environmentally sustainable. He said ‘most vessels are like hazardous waste incinerators because they burn heavy fuel oil which should be processed as highly toxic waste but is usually exhaled without sufficient filtering’.

100 Years With Diesel - Successor Ready

Exactly 100 years ago, the Danish ship Selandia set an example for international shipping as a pioneer within CO2 reduction. Now we are ready for yet another environmental quantum leap. The most distinctive feature of the M/S Selandia was the fact that it had no funnel emitting black smoke up into the sky. The M/S Selandia marked the beginning of the end of steamships. As the first ocean-going ship, she sailed on diesel instead of coal. A technological revolution built at the B&W shipyard. And at the same time, a major gain for the environment.
