The Northern Lights carbon capture and storage JV in Norway is increasing CO2 shipping capacity with its third LCO2 carrier. Like the first two vessels, the gas equipment specialist Svanehøj will supply the cargo pump system. Maritime nations including Denmark and the Marshall Islands are rallying support for a global carbon dioxide emissions levy on shipping, with talks at a critical stage ahead of a U.N. agency meeting next month that could back the measure.The levy could provide funds to help countries cope with climate change and help curb emissions from shipping - a sector that transports about 90% of world trade and accounts for nearly 3% of global CO2 emissions, but whose international nature means it often avoids national CO2-cutting regulations.Member countries of the U.N.

Energy companies Equinor, Shell, TotalEnergies, Gassco and classification society DNV have commenced a new joint industry project (JIP) to develop low-pressure solutions for the transportation of CO2 by ships. The CETO (CO2 Efficient Transport via Ocean) JIP will carry out the technology qualification of a low-pressure ship design and identify solutions to scale CO2 transportation volume, while reducing the associated risks, to support the development of opportunities in CCS. CETO is funded by the project partners and GASSNOVA through the CLIMIT program and is expected to be completed in 2023.

Chinese shipbuilder Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. has won a contract to build two CO2 carriers for Northern Lights, a Norwegian carbon capture and storage project.Under the contract awarded by the Northern Lights JV, owned equally by Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies, the Chinese shipbuilder will build two CO2 carriers, each with a cargo size of 7,500 m3 and a length of 130 meters.The two vessels, designed to transport liquid CO2 with purpose-built pressurized cargo tanks, are expected to be ready for delivery by mid-2024. The primary fuel for the ships will be LNG, keeping emissions low.

Japan's Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) said it will make its first foray into the liquefied CO2 ocean transport business through an investment in Larvik Shipping AS, a Norwegian ship management company for liquefied CO2 carriers.Liquefied CO2 ocean transport plays a key role in carbon dioxide capture utilization and storage (CCUS) value chains as a means of effectively connecting collection sites with storage or usage sites. CCUS is drawing attention as a technology to collect and store CO2 or use it effectively, and a step toward realizing a low-carbon society.

Anthony Veder, which operate gas tankers in all the segments of gas shipping, from LPG shipping to LNG shipping and from CO2 shipping to ethylene shipping, will take over the commercial management of five gas carriers of Chicago-based GATX Corp.The vessels will start trading in Anthony Veder’s gas pool in June, the Rotterdam-based shipowner said in a press note.With this transaction Anthony Veder further strengthens its position as liquified gas shipping company to a fleet of 38 ethylene, LPG and LNG carriers, it said.The gas carriers previously were part of the Norgas pool and will be renamed starting with Coral, the release noted.Three out of five vessels will transport liquefied petroleum gas and petrochemical gasses such as ethylene.

Dutch gas carrier operator Anthony Veder said it is expanding its fleet with a 30,000-cbm liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier that is currently being constructed by China’s  Zhejiang Xinle Shipbuilding in Ningbo.The vessel will be completed by Zhejiang Xinle Shipbuilding under supervision of Anthony Veder and is expected to be ready for worldwide trading in the summer of 2019, said a press release from the operator of gas tankers in all the segments of gas shipping, from LPG shipping to LNG shipping and from CO2 shipping to ethylene shipping.After delivery it will be renamed with a Coral name. Gassco has commissioned Knutsen OAS Shipping and Larvik Shipping to study transport of CO2 by ship in connection with the Norwegian government’s full-scale project for managing this greenhouse gas. In cooperation with Gassnova, Gassco has earlier studied CO2 handling chains. “The transport study will help to ensure that the government’s ambition of realising at least one full-scale CO2 facility by 2020 can be met,” says Gassco CEO Frode Leversund. The CO2 chain is being addressed by industrial players. Gassnova has assigned studies of the relevant capture locations to Norcem in Brevik, Yara at Herøya and Klemetsrud EGE in Oslo, while Gassco and Statoil are responsible for the transport and storage aspects respectively.

Shipping could be responsible for 17% of global CO2 emissions in 2050 if left unregulated, according to a new scientific study conducted by European Parliament Directorate General for Internal Policies. Any agreement at the Paris Climate Summit must therefore send a clear signal to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that CO2 reduction targets and measures for shipping are needed to help keep warming below dangerous levels, according to NGOs Seas At Risk, Transport & Environment (T&E) and the Marine Conservation Society. Maersk Tankers, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Det Norske Veritas (DNV) have agreed to collaborate on the design and risk assessment of tankers for shipping CO2. Maersk Tankers is already in a partnership with Maersk Oil and Finnish utilities Fortum and Teollisuuden Voima (TVO), aimed at developing a joint carbon emissions abatement project in the area of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). “Shipping CO2 in tanker vessels is a cost effective and flexible way to get CO2 from power plants to offshore storage sites, which makes it a suitable solution for large CO2 emission sources such as coal-fired power plants, especially in the emerging phase of CCS.” says Anders Schulze, Head of CO2 Shipping in Maersk Tankers.
