Cummins: New Keel-cooled QSC8.3 600 Horsepower Rating for Marine Vessels

Cummins has introduced a new rating for its QSC8.3 propulsion engine, expanding the keel-cooled solution to 600 horsepower with an engine speed of 2800 rpm."This addition to the QSC8.3 power range means Cummins now offers 493 horsepower - 600 horsepower (368-441 kW) for both keel cooled and heat exchanger solutions," the company said."Cummins is the first engine manufacturer to bring this power dense rating with a keel cooling option to market," the company said."Optimized for use in light-duty applications including patrol boats and parasail boats…

Cummins Introduces New EPA Tier 4 Engine

Cummins Inc. launched the QSK60 EPA Tier 4 / IMO III at Cummins Marine’s virtual showcase on Wednesday, April 14. The new EPA Tier 4 compliant selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system is being paired with the QSK60 engine to address the impact of stricter emissions regulations on commercial marine markets in North America. The new system mitigates downtime and improves total cost of ownership, the manufacturer said. “For a lot of customers in the marine market, uptime is their biggest concern,” said Eddie Brown, market segment leader for Cummins Marine.

New LNG ATB Bunker Vessel is a US First

Bunkering ports around the world have long used a variety of small tankers or tug and barge combinations to deliver fuel to visiting ships. Mostly this was heavy oil, but recently a new breed of bunkering vessels is emerging to deliver clean burning liquefied natural gas (LNG) to modern ships with dual-fuel capabilities.The fall of 2020 will see a new addition to this fleet servicing ships in Florida and the Caribbean. As an articulated tug barge (ATB) combination, the vessel will have a cargo capacity of 4,000 cubic meters of LNG.

Metal Shark Delivers Two Pilot Boats to New Orleans

Shipbuilder Metal Shark has delivered two new pilot boats to New Orleans-based operator Belle Chasse Marine Transportation, LLC (BCMT).Designed in-house by Metal Shark and built at the company’s Jeanerette, La. production facility, Jet 1 and Jet 2 are 45-foot welded aluminum Defiant-class monohull pilothouse vessels featuring an extensively proven hull design. Paraguay’s Tsuneishi Shipyard, a subsidiary of the Japanese firm of the same name, recently delivered the powerful towboat Tebicuary 3 to her owners Navegación del Sur S.A. (Navesur) in June of 2018. U.S. Yards: Competing – and Winning – Here and Across the Big Pond

Louisiana-based Metal Shark powers into the second half of 2018 with a healthy backlog, multiple recent deliveries into foreign markets, and a portfolio of patrol craft that has attracted multiple clients – here and abroad. Key patrol boat contracts for this rapidly expanding builder include the U.S. Coast Guard Response Boat – Small (RB-S). Over 300 of these units are service since the award of the contract in 2012 and, says Metal Shark, new units are in production and shipping weekly. Separately, over 50 of the U.S. Navy Force Protection Boat – Medium (FPB-M) have already been delivered and are in service. That contract, too, is still active and boats are shipping regularly. Looking ahead, Metal Shark was awarded a contract in October 2017 to produce up to 50 of the U.S.

New Patrol Boats Delivered in Curacao

Four new high-speed patrol boats commissioned on the island of Curacao are the first to be delivered to the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard (DCCG) under a 12-boat order announced last year.The welded aluminum 38 Defiant monohull patrol boats were designed and manufactured by Louisiana based shipbuilder Metal Shark as the result of a multi-year effort by the DCCG to procure a replacement for its fleet of open-cockpit rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RIB).The new enclosed-pilothouse vessels will serve as the DCCG’s main interceptors, patrolling the territorial waters of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St.

Two Newbuilds Delivered to Virgin Islands Port Authority

Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark said it has delivered two custom welded aluminum vessels to the Virgin Islands Port Authority (VIPA).The new vessels, a 45-foot pilot boat and a 32-foot port security vessel, were designed by Metal Shark and built at the company’s Jeanerette, La. production facility. Both vessels were recently delivered to St. Thomas and transferred to VIPA and are now operating from the Edward Wilmoth Blyden IV Marine Facility on the Charlotte Amalie waterfront where they serve the island of St. Thomas and nearby St.

An Engine Oil Goes the Distance

An inspection of one of two main engines on a U.S. inland waterways vessel revealed that ExxonMobil’s Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 diesel engine oil provided outstanding protection and cleanliness for a Cummins KTA38 marine diesel main engine after nine years of continuous use. The engine had accumulated 21,782 running hours with an initial fill of Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 engine oil. Mobil SignumSM oil analysis was used to closely monitor the health of the engine throughout this period, with support from the ExxonMobil field engineering team.

World Fishing Fleet: Vietnam Grows the Fleet

In keeping with their reputation as a nation that can overcome all obstacles, Vietnam is rebuilding its aging fishing fleet. With a government program of soft loans, designated Decree 67/ND-CP, fishermen are building boats along 28 coastal provinces from the north to the south of Vietnam. Capt. Trinh Van Hung, grew up in a fishing family and, after completing his schooling, he fished briefly with his father. His curiosity took him into business as a trader but the call of the sea was strong. At 25, he returned to the fishing.

By consolidating its commercial and recreational teams, the Cummins Marine organization will be better positioned to serve the business and its recreational, government service and commercial marine customers, the company said. Cummins Marine will be led by Jim Schacht, formerly General Manager and Executive Director of Cummins Commercial Marine. New Electronic Cummins After 45,000 Hours

The hours that a Cummins Marine engine can run between rebuilds will vary depending on operating conditions. However it is not unusual for operators to report 45,000 hours of operation. Such was the case for the owners of the Belgian-registered, 110x12-meter inland waterways vessel OliMar. The dry cargo vessel was built in 1998 and fitted with a 16-cylinder 1,600 HP Cummins KTA50-M2 engine. Running primarily in daylight hours, the engine meter approached the 45,000-hour mark in early 2014. The owner knew that it was time to take action but had to consider two options.

Polish-Built Longliner at NorFishing

In June of 2013 the Polish Shipyard Poltramp had begun construction of a 20.99 by 8.5-meter longliner for a Norwegian customer. In August of 2014 the new vessel, having completed successful fishing trips, travelled to Trondheim, Norway for exhibition at the Nor-Fishing trade show on behalf of Poltramp. Nearly 15,000 visitors from 48 countries visited the 2014 edition of the show. While attending the show, with the Cummins Marine display, Jon Folkedal, Cummins Norway Marine sales manager, took the opportunity to visit on board the M/V Grotle.

Glycerine Engine Featured at Seawork 2014

The world’s first marine engine to be run using the exceptionally clean fuel of glycerine will be on display at Seawork 2014 together with a seminar session entitled ‘Will my ship/workboat run on this?’ where interested parties can find out more about the fuel’s possibilities for use in the marine sector. Cummins Launches QSK60 Power Emergency Genset

Cummins announced the latest addition to the C Power product line, the QSK60 C Power (CP) emergency generator set. Engineered by the Cummins Center of Excellence for the demands of offshore applications, the QSK60 C Power genset is driven by the QSK60 marine auxiliary engine with MCRS fuel system. It could be argued that no other sector of the maritime market has experienced a design innovation revolution quite like the Offshore Service Vessel (OSV) market. Driven by demands to supply people, gear and goods to offshore installations that are increasingly further from shore in deeper waters, today’s OSV is a far cry from those built only a decade ago.
