As part of a R&D project, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) has investigated the influence of the behavioral change of individual seafarers on carbon emissions on selected ships managed by BSM Deutschland (BSMD). Using clean-tech start-up Signol’s app, BSM reports that "remarkable reductions in bunker fuel consumption" were detected on single ships.During the research project, which ran in the second half of 2021, 60 Masters and Chief Engineers on 28 vessels under full management of BSMD were invited to take part in the trial on a voluntary basis.

Vallianz Holdings Limited entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Royal IHC to design and build a next generation service operation vessel (SOV) to support offshore wind farms.Designed by Royal IHC, the battery hybrid SOV will house advanced levels of integration and autonomy, designed to be ready for true zero emission operations by using full battery offshore charging system and alternative fuels for propulsion.The SOV will have a dynamic positioning system, a motion compensated gangway and crane, an elevator tower as well as a daughter craft with step-less boat landing.

The renewable energy major Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has finalized the acquisition of Senvion's European onshore service assets and intellectual property (IP).The German-Spanish manufacturer said in a press release that it has a “robust integration plan” for the assets, which will add 9GW of machines in 13 countries to its service book, bringing the total to 69GW.The addition of the Senvion assets marks an important step in the company’s growth strategy, part of the company’s L3AD2020 strategic program, and strengthens its competitive position in its multibrand portfolio.Siemens Gamesa will now service an even broader range of wind turbine technologies.

ATLAS ELEKTRONIK and Thales Deutschland have jointly been commissioned to deliver the combat system of the German Class K130 Corvette. The order comprises five corvettes as well as the Test and Training Centre (EZ/BUZ) in Wilhelmshaven.With completion scheduled for 2025, the FüWES K130 consortium formed by the two companies and led by ATLAS ELEKTRONIK will deliver the combat system hardware and also adapt and update the existing Combat Management System software of the K130, first batch (ships 1-5).The contracted solution for ships 6-10 is identical to the original contract (2003) for the K130, first batch. In line with the re-build requirement, changes in the solution are only related to obsolescence and compliancy with German regulations.

Lloyd's Register (LR) has released a new guidance document aimed at facilitating a risk-based approach to battery use. The guidance describes the key hazards to consider when installing battery technology, and gives an overview of our non-prescriptive approach to approval. The guidance also covers battery chemistry and industry standards. The guidance starts at the beginning of a battery system’s lifecycle when the cells are being manufactured, and goes on to consider how an installation affects or is affected by a vessel’s power system, placement on board, ventilation, firefighting, electrical protection and maintenance. The guidance aims to help industry consider the hazards associated with large battery installations but is not specific to a particular cell chemistry.

Corvus Energy announced that that it will deliver an additional 2.6 MWh battery system to German-Danish passenger ferry company Scandlines – operators of the world’s largest battery hybrid electric ferry fleet. Scandlines’ fleet of battery hybrid ferries currently include: the M/V Deutschland, M/V Schleswig-Holstein, M/V Prins Richard and M/V Prinsesse Benedikte, with the M/V Copenhagen and M/V Berlin under construction. Each vessel has between 1.5 MWh and 2.6 MWh of energy storage. Scandlines’ battery hybrid electric ferries provide an economic link between Denmark and Germany, with daily sailings on multiple routes between these countries.

The EU's TEN-T Program will provide more than €2 million to back the upgrade of two ferries navigating in the Baltic Sea to the mixed use of electricity and fuel. The new hybrid propulsion system will help to reduce the environmental impact of ships, as well as secure the operability and stability of the vessels. The new EU regulation requires all vessels travelling in European waters to cut down the emission of sulphur oxide (SO) from 2015 onwards to decrease environmental pollution.

The damaged Scandlines ferry M/V Prinsesse Benedikte is being repaired at the Polish shipyard Remontowa and is expected to be ready before the end of June 2015. Following extensive clear-up and inspection, the Remontowa yard in Gdansk, Poland, together with Scandlines’ on-site team has now started repairs of the Scandlines ferry M/V Prinsesse Benedikte, which was damaged while outdocking on Wednesday 11 March 2015. The ferry was concluding a planned three week yard stay, where among other things the ship had a new diesel engine, radar system, ventilation system, scrubber and underwater coating. During outdocking the floating dock keeled over and the ship slipped from the keel block. As a result the ship fell approx.

Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V., in partnership with Volker Stevin International (VolkerWessels), has been awarded a contract by Iberdrola Renewables Offshore Deutschland GmbH for the partial construction of the Wikinger Offshore Wind Farm in the German section of the Baltic Sea. L-3 SAM Electronics has announced that via its Danish subsidiary, L-3 Lyngsø Marine, it has been awarded a contract to retrofit navigation facilities aboard four double-ended passenger and freight ferries operated by the German-Danish ferry company, Scandlines. The four ships being retrofitted are the M/F Deutschland, M/F Prins Richard, M/F Prinsesse Benedikte and M/F Schleswig-Holstein, which all operate the short-distance route between Puttgarden, Germany, and Rødby, Denmark.
