Vigor Wins $133 Mln US Navy Repair Job

Vigor Marine has been awarded a $133,406,869 firm-fixed-price contract to prepare for and accomplish repair and alteration requirements for USS McCampbell (DDG 85) chief of naval operations scheduled depot maintenance availability. The contract includes options which, if exercised, will bring the cumulative value of this contract to $155,621,173.The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer departed Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan on July 2, and is currently is en route to Vigor's Portland, Ore. shipyard, where she will undergo her midlife modernization.

Investigators Examine DVR Content from Fatal Duck Boat Sinking

NY Waterway Ferries Fit Video Surveillance System

The 8 million annual passengers that travel the New York Harbor on NY Waterway ferries now do so more safely with a system that includes hundreds of Interlogix IP and analog cameras, transmitting from moving ferries to a land-based security command center via a fast-roaming wireless mesh network based on multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) by Fluidmesh Networks. NY Waterway is the nation’s largest privately owned commuter ferry company, transporting 30,000 riders a day between 22 landings and terminals along a 100-mile corridor in the Hudson and East rivers and upper New York Harbor.

FLIR Introduces MU-Series Thermal Imaging Technology

FLIR Systems, introduces the MU-Series, a thermal night vision system. The multi-sensor payload comes with a cooled midwave infrared, high-resolution 640 x 512 thermal camera and a high-resolution color camera.Other options include a low-light black and white camera to help with low-light situational awareness and a wide field of view uncooled longwave infrared, high-resolution 640 x 480 thermal camera to maximize MU-Series’ spectral range. MU-Series’ midwave infrared camera cuts through particulates in the atmosphere to provide crisp thermal video, even at long range and in foul weather.

NGSCO Upgrades CCTV for LNG Fleet

Kongsberg Maritime delivered CCTV systems for installation on National Gas Shipping Company’s (NGSCO) fleet of eight LNG carrier vessels in the Middle East. The project was secured in conjunction with Unique Systems FZE, Kongsberg Maritime’s local sales agent. Unique Systems FZE will be assisting in the installation and commissioning of the Kongsberg Maritime CCTV systems with two vessels refits having been completed already in April, another in July and the remaining five planned over the next few months.

OMM Launches New Business

Offshore Marine Management (OMM) has launched a new survey and subsea business this week, which will focus on surveying, cable and structural subsea inspection and subsea engineering. Recently appointed Director of Survey and Subsea, Arron Burrows said this new business offers clients an all-inclusive “one stop shop” for cable solutions - with survey, inspection and final deliverables - and will mean an overall better service. The new business offers data analysis and management using the latest hardware and software technology to support cable-related works both onshore and offshore. This includes a geographic information system (GIS) suite complete with digital video data integration for annual inspection data integrity and remedial activity monitoring.

New Antennas from Sea Tel

Sea Tel has released the first USAT (Ultra Small Aperture Terminal) antenna. Sea Tel announced a smaller, lighter 60 cm antenna system, the first 60 cm marine antenna to meet FCC’s and ETSI’s specification allowing multi mode use with Spread Spectrum, TDMA and SCPC services. The USAT 24 is aimed at Coastal trading vessels and inland craft. Services are currently being Beta trialed with a number of modem providers including Hughes, Viasat, iDirect, and STM on a number of satellite operator’s footprints world-wide. Service in Europe and the US is expected to start in the 4th Quarter of 2008.

New Navy Contracts

Bechtel Plant Machinery Inc., Pittsburgh, Pa., is being awarded a $605,030,234 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-07-C-2102) for additional naval nuclear propulsion components. Work will be performed in Pittsburgh, Pa. (68 percent) and Schenectady, N.Y. (32 percent). Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. No completion date or additional information is provided on contracts supporting the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. As his first task, Steve will assist Globe Wireless with the opening of its 15th international sales and support office in . Levine's background includes nine years with Stratos Global as the Business Development Manager, where he was responsible for Inmarsat and Iridium channel development and marketing. Oil Spill Experts Address High Density Oil Spills

Leading world experts in oil spill response have agreed a series of recommendations to deal with future spills of high density oil during the International Maritime Organization’s Third R&D Forum on High Density Oil Spill Response, held from 11-13 March in Brest, France, following the generous offer of the French Government to host the Forum. Large quantities of high density oil are carried by ships either as cargo or as fuel (bunkers). GDS Contracts To Deploy Lightning Access System

General Defense Systems, Inc. has secured a contract to deploy the General Defense Systems (GDS) Lightning Access System, designed to improve information access for security systems at U.S. ports, including shipping container X-ray inspection systems. The first of these systems is to be deployed at the Port of Miami, offering a wireless broadband connection to the facility's existing X-ray container inspection system and providing real-time access to video cameras mounted on the X-ray system, as well as to the X-ray images as they are viewed. "Our Lightning Access System is another example of the integrated technology that GDS is implementing to assist in the improvement of information dissemination and access for homeland security," states Frank Fawcett, GDS president.

Port of Wilmington Installs Surveillance System

Port of Wilmington, Del. has deployed VistaScape's SiteIQ software to automate surveillance, enforce port security policy, and increase the effectiveness of its security staff in responding to and preventing violations. The selection of SiteIQ further extends VistaScape's market leadership in the maritime sector for software-based intelligent surveillance systems. SiteIQ is part of an overall security upgrade for the Port funded through $1.7 million in grants from the Transportation Security Administration and the Office of Domestic Preparedness. Advantech, Inc. of Dover, Del. is the security integrator for the Port. It partnered with Honeywell to provide and install the integrated video surveillance, access control, and digital video storage solutions.

Voyager Of The Seas Goes Live

Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN), a subsidiary of ATC Teleports of Alexandria, Va. set sail from Finland to the port of Miami on the world's largest cruise ship — Voyager of the Seas. MTN has equipped Voyager with full redundancy services including dual antennas and two MPEG-2 Digital Video units. Each antenna on the 142,000-ton vessel will have 12 lines for multiple voice and data capabilities. In preparation for Voyager's live broadcast, MTN modified one of the existing communications antennas for full motion video uplink. In addition, two flyaway video/audio systems, which are used to convert analog signals to digital are located below deck.
