Maersk Tests Containerized Battery System

SCHOTTEL Delivers Propulsion for First Emission-Free Push Boat

The Elektra push boat ordered by BEHALA, Berlin harbor’s warehousing and logistics firm will be equipped with rudder propellers from Schottel. Elektra will be a hybrid canal push boat powered by a combination of fuel cells, batteries and an electric motor. The boat is currently under construction at the Hermann Barthel shipyard in Derben (Germany), and is planned for testing in Berlin in 2020."Elektra shows what is possible," said Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wärtsilä Tests Wireless Charging for Hybrid Coastal Ferry

Wärtsilä informs it has tested its automatic wireless induction charging system on a hybrid powered commercial coastal ferry, the first in the world operating with high power wireless charging capability for its batteries. The tests were carried out in Norwegian during the end of August and early September on the 85 meter long MF Folgefonn owned by Norled, one of Norway's largest ferry operators waters. The project, partially funded by Innovation Norway, represents a breakthrough in the evolution of plug-in electrically operated vessels, Wärtsilä said.

Wärtsilä, Cavotec Developing Wireless Charging, Mooring Concept

An agreement has been signed between Wärtsilä and Cavotec to jointly develop the world's first combined induction charging and automatic mooring concept. Wärtsilä has developed a wireless charging system based on inductive power transfer. Cavotec provides automated mooring systems for various types of vessels, as well as shore power and reel systems. By combining the strengths and expertise of the two companies, an integrated wireless charging/mooring concept is to be developed for use in Wärtsilä's ship designs.

DEME Orders World’s Largest Cutter Suction Dredger

Royal IHC said it has been awarded a contract for the design, construction and delivery of a 164m-long, 44,180kW self-propelled cutter suction dredger (CSD) for DEME in Belgium. The vessel, Spartacus, will be built in the Netherlands for summer 2019 delivery. Spartacus will be the world’s first CSD powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), following on the order for the first LNG-powered trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs) Minerva and Scheldt River, and the LNG-ready Bonny River, that are currently under construction at IHC’s shipyards.

New Offshore Installation Vessel for GeoSea

COSCO will build a new offshore installation vessel in China for DEME subsidiary GeoSea, to be used for offshore wind farm construction, oil and gas industry services and decommissioning work. The vessel, Orion, is due to be delivered in 2019. With a total installed capacity of 44,180kW Orion will be equipped with a high-tech crane with lifting capacity of 3,000t at more than 50m. The loads can be lifted to an unrivalled height of more than 170m. Deck space has been maximized to provide exceptionally high transport and load capacity.

Wärtsilä's' New Fuel Pump for Gas Operations

The new Wärtsilä Svanehøj ECA Fuel Pump (EFP) has been developed to support gas fuelled engines achieve greater efficiency and environmental sustainability.

The latest addition to Wärtsilä's portfolio of gas pumps has been introduced. The new Wärtsilä Svanehøj ECA Fuel Pump (EFP) has been developed in close cooperation with designers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel systems to support gas fuelled engines that achieve greater efficiency. The new Wärtsilä pump offers a number of advantages, including having no tank connections below liquid level, no electrical components inside the tank, and hardly any contribution to the generation of boil off gas.

GE Enters the Containership Industry

GE’s Marine Solutions has signed a contract to provide auxiliary electric systems to containership operator Maersk Line’s second generation Triple-E vessels, thus representing GE’s entry into the container shipping industry. The contract will see GE provide Maersk Line with its new Power Take Off/Power Take In (PTO/PTI) technology, which consists of two drives, two induction motors and a power management system. The solution provides excess power on demand while reducing fuel consumption, GE said.

In an official handover ceremony at the Den Helder Naval Base, the Royal Netherlands Navy took formal delivery of three Damen ASD 2810 Hybrid tugs. In addition to providing an increase in ship handling capacity, the new vessels are also installed with hybrid propulsion systems. This will contribute to Dutch Ministry of Defence ambitions regarding sustainable operations of the Navy. The acquisition of the three Damen tugs is part of the Royal Netherlands Navy’s ongoing fleet renewal programme.

Trident to Acquire Callenberg

Trident Maritime Systems (Trident), a portfolio company of J.F. Lehman & Company (JFLCO), signed a definitive agreement to acquire Callenberg Technology Group (Callenberg) from Wilhelmsen Maritime Services AS. Callenberg designs, assembles, integrates, and supports HVAC, electrical energy management, and insulation systems for commercial and government vessels around the world.  It is headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden and employs approximately 900 employees in 14 countries. Trident is an independent provider of turnkey marine joiner, distributed, electro-mechanical, and power, propulsion and control systems and solutions for government and commercial customers both in the U.S. and internationally.  Completion of the sale is expected to take place later in 2016.

Finnish Shipyard wins Ship Deal from Royal Caribbean

Miami-based cruise line operator Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and Meyer Turku shipyard signed a memorandum of agreement for two next generation cruise ship orders to be delivered in 2022 and 2024. The around 200,000 gross ton large cruise ships under the project name “Icon” will mark the beginning of a new generation of LNG powered cruise ships with a number of innovations such as an application of fuel cells for power generation. Fuel cells are a very energy efficient and clean way to generate electrical energy.

Great Ships of 2014: M/V Harvest Leader - ECO Class PCTC

Harvest Leader is an ECO CLASS 7700 units PCTC, built at Hyundai Mipo Dock (HMD) and delivered in October 2014 with a CLEAN class notation. The efficient Post Panamax design was achieved via close collaboration of the owner, the builder and class, in this case DNV GL. The most significant improvement is in the field of energy efficiency in terms of fuel consumption per unit carried, which the owner claims is presently the lowest in the PCTC market. It stands at 5.95 kg MDO per day per unit carried at 20 knots, a reduction of over 30% compared with previous designs.
