Maritime Training: Keeping it Close to Home
On the U.S. Gulf Coast, two well-regarded maritime education providers are expanding to meet growing local demand, while satisfying local employers with quality graduates. The sense of ‘community’ that they project is both real, and intentional. Less than 350 miles apart, the ports of Houston and New Orleans handle all manners of marine commerce and cargoes, employ tens of thousands on the waterfront and collectively service an increasingly large percentage of the nation’s domestic and international marine traffic. As both ports deepen their channels and grow their facilities, the need for qualified mariners, dock workers and marine professionals has become more acute.

“You see that ship. That’s our ship,” says Karsten Saevik, as he directs our attention to the virtual image of one of his platform supply vessels on a computer screen in a darkened room. Saevik is one of four shipping bosses whose crew skills needs will be met at the new Faasnavaag Ocean Academy. We arrive five days from its opening, and with the drywall still drying, we look move closer to a giant white sphere indicating a bridge simulator in the wide-open reception. “Definitely, this is our human capital development center for marine skills,” said Saevik.
CAE Gains Approval for BRM and ERM Training
The Norwegian Maritime Authority (Sjøfartsdirektoratet) granted approval to the CAE Oslo training center to conduct Bridge Resource Management (BRM) and Engine Resource Management (ERM) training. The training courses are designed to address human behaviour and attitudes which can lead to human error on the bridge as well as in control and engine rooms. Resolve Maritime Academy (Academy) opened its new Simulation Training Center on Monday, March 12 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA facility adjacent to Port Everglades. The state-of-the-art, 7000-square-foot facility will provide leading edge simulation-based training programs to enhance safe navigation at sea for cruise line and commercial shipping personnel and other maritime professionals worldwide.
Resolve to Provide RCI with Simulator Training
Resolve Maritime Academy and Royal Caribbean Cruises to join forces to deliver state-of-the-art simulator-based safety and navigation training for Royal Caribbean cruise ship personnel. Resolve Maritime Academy and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. announced today that plans are underway for new simulation-based training programs to enhance safety at sea for the cruise line’s personnel and guests. In 2011, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) selected Resolve to be their exclusive provider of all simulator-based training courses, and formalized arrangements to jointly develop the new programs.
