Shipbuilder VARD announced it has secured a new contract for the design and construction of one stern trawler for Deutsche Fischfang-Union GmbH & Co. KG in Germany. The contract value  is in excess of  NOK 500 million.The stern trawler has been developed by VARD in close cooperation with Deutche Fischfang-Union (DFFU). The new vessel will be the first trawler of VARD’s own design sold to Germany.The VARD 8 03 trawler design is developed to meet the latest demands for fish health management, efficiency, and environmentally friendly operations.

Fishing vessels with crews of forced laborers behave in systematically different ways to the rest of the global fleet, according to a study purporting to be the first to remotely identify vessels potentially engaged in modern slavery.Using satellite data, machine learning and on-the-ground expertise from human rights practitioners, U.S. researchers found up to 26% of about 16,000 industrial fishing vessels analyzed were at high risk of using forced labor.As many as 100,000 people are estimated to work on these high-risk vessels, many of whom are potential victims of forced labor.

Portugal’s Blue Atlantic has released new plans for an 800 meter quay to berth two Panamax vessels showcasing its maritime trade potential. The 96-hectare site for sale in one of Europe’s leading maritime industrial zones is being primed for maritime, ports and logistics investors targeting the Iberian Peninsula and mainland Europe. Spanish naval design and architecture firm, Oliver Design, has just completed interior design of the salmon factory vessel Norwegian Gannet. The ship is currently under construction at the Balenciaga yards near San Sebastian, Spain. Oliver Design will shortly begin the work of interior outfitting on the ship, which is due to be launched in April and handed over to the owner in August. Although the shipyard was founded in 1921 and the naval design firm in 1990, this is the first time the two leading Basque firms have worked together.

Vard Holdings Limited announced it has secured contracts valued at approximately NOK 700 million ($84 million) for the design and construction of seven stern trawlers for Icelandic ship owners Bergur-Huginn, Utgerdarfelag Akureyringa, Gjögur and Skinney-Thinganes. Together, VARD and the four ship owners have developed a new concept for seven stern trawlers for fishing operations in Iceland. The vessels, measuring 29 by 12 meters, will be constructed and outfitted by Vard Aukra in Norway for deliveries in 2019.

Engines are designed to run on refinery grade fuel. At the time fuel is refined, it is at its purest state; however, it deteriorates rapidly as it oxidizes and is attacked by a host of organisms (bacteria, yeast, molds), that change the molecular structure of the fuel. The Fitch Fuel Catalyst (FFC) reverses this natural aging process by inducing a chemical reaction using a patented metal alloy catalyst (not a liquid additive) that reforms diesel fuel, creating a more combustible, cleaner burning product as evidenced by the end-user comments presented in this document.

The Ministry of Shipping, India has sanctioned Rs. 30 Crore ($4.37 mln) for capacity building and providing safety training of 20,000 workers engaged in ship recycling activities at Alang-Sosiya recycling yard in Gujarat. In addition, Rs. 13.77 Crore has also been sanctioned for skill training in 27 coastal districts in convergence with Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY). In addition to this, to support the development of fishermen community, the Ministry is funding select fishing harbor projects under Sagarmala in convergence with Department of Animal Husbandry Dairying & Fisheries (DADF). In this regard, Rs. 13 Crore has been sanctioned for the modernization of the existing fishing harbor at Sassoon Dock, in Mumbai.

Indonesia invites Taiwanese investors and businessmen to invest in the maritime sector to support government programs to make Indonesia into the world's maritime axis, reports Antara News. The Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) has said the investment potential in the maritime sector has reached US$1.2 trillion. Seeing this great potential and in line with the objective of realizing the vision of becoming an axis of the maritime world, Indonesia invited investors from Taiwan. Director of Investment Planning in the Agribusiness and Natural Resources of the Capital Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Hanung Harimba Rachman said the maritime sector is a priority in the countrys 5 year development program. "The maritime sector is a priority in our strategic plan for 2015-2019," Hanung said.

The world's biggest and most modern krill fishing factory vessel is to be designed by Wärtsilä. The vessel will operate in the pristine waters of the Antarctic, a World Heritage site, and the Wärtsilä design provides an appropriately sustainable environmental solution. The contract, which was signed in December 2015, has been placed by Shanghai based Hansail Marine & Offshore Design and will feature Wärtsilä's VS 6206 FT design. The vessel is to be built for Jiangsu Sunline Deep Sea Fisheries Co, based in China. Wärtsilä's extensive experience in designing highly efficient fishing vessels was an important factor in the award of this contract.

How did you find a career in the maritime industry? As a consequence of my father´s dedication to the industry, as founder of a shipping agency in the early eighties as well as partner in a large shipping company and shipyard´s ownership, I grew up in this atmosphere and orientated my academic training towards being able to continuing what he and his business partners created and developed. Although I did start my professional career dealing with other type of businesses within my family, the core root of our family wealth has always been in the maritime industry.
