Conrad to Build Two Tugs for the US Army Corps of Engineers

It’s European Design, But Built For The Jones Act Market
The Netherlands-based Damen Shipyards Group is one of the industry’s largest and most recognized shipbuilders, perhaps best known for its standardized, serial production workboats. Now with several dozen newbuild and repair yards on the map, the company has produced more than 6,000 vessels over its 90-year history—from harbor tugs and offshore supply ships, to ferries and patrol craft. But Damen does not have a shipyard in the United States, and therefore doesn’t directly build vessels for the Jones Act market. Instead, it licenses its designs to U.S.

The Many Missions (and Capabilities) of Weeks Marine
The almost 100-year old firm has many specialties, including the ability to construct innovative, complicated tonnage for its own purposes. The slowdown in barge construction in some sectors hasn’t dampened the need for specialty barges in other areas. In many cases, these mission requirements can involve the repurposing of existing tonnage using sometimes innovative and unusual design parameters. Such was the case when Cranford, NJ-based Weeks Marine (WMI) completed the conversion of an existing ABS deck barge into a loadline compliant, semi-submersible, all self-contained unit. Its first assignment involved transit to Canada for the launching of concrete caissons in Halifax, Nova Scotia for a new pier.

Todd Schauer is Director of Operations at Resolve Marine Group, as well as President of the American Salvage Association. After graduating from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy with a degree in Naval Architecture in 1991, he followed that up with graduate degrees in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. And, while his considerable U.S. Coast Guard experience includes shipboard engineering, marine safety, advanced engineering and emergency response, he is best known for his longtime role in the commercial salvage business.

Sterling Builds Massive Dredger
Vessel’s crane is the centerpiece of this state-of-the-art, technologically advanced workhorse platform. Sterling Equipment, Inc., an East Coast marine construction rental company based out of Quincy, Mass., has more than 135 pieces of floating equipment in commission, but its newest barge, a 180- x 65- x 12-foot crane dredge, will be among its largest and most technologically advanced. Resolve Salvage Removes Ten Vessel Wrecks in Sri Lanka
Fort Lauderdale, FL – Resolve Marine Group Inc. and its Resolve Salvage & Fire (Asia) Pte Ltd. subsidiary have announced that wreck removal operations at Kankesanthurai (KKS) Harbor in northern Sri Lanka have been completed. Retained by the Government of India/Shipping Corporation of India, and working on site in cooperation with the Government of Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan Navy since June, 2011, Resolve crews undertook the mapping, removal and disposition of ten vessels, which were sunk during the LTTE conflict between 1994 and 2000. The wrecks, lying outside and within the port, had obstructed safe navigation in the area and effectively prevented commercial shipping activity since that time.
Obituary: David Parrot, Founder and Former Chief, TITAN Salvage
David Gray Parrot, 65, founder and former chief of TITAN Salvage, passed away in Maine in the comfort of family and friends. Parrot is survived by his wife Penny, sons Hunter and Gage, and a network of friends and family. A private family service is scheduled for this weekend in Maine. Willis Limited Awarded Contract for Panama Canal
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced that it has awarded a contract for insurance brokerage services to Willis Limited. Beginning October 2009, the firm will provide strategic counsel, as the ACP chooses the best policies to cover property, floating equipment, loss of income and maritime contingencies, among others. The contract will be for one year with an option to renew for three additional years. Willis Limited is also the ACP’s broker for its Owner Controlled Insurance Program that includes the Third Party Liability and Construction All Risk coverage for the design and construction of the new set of locks and the fourth dry excavation projects under the Panama Canal Expansion Program.
New contracts for Dockwise
Dockwise Shipping was awarded contracts for the transportation of one of the largest semi submersible drilling rigs and various floating equipment. Dockwise Shipping will transport the new build sixth generation semi submersible drilling rig Noble Dave Beard in 2009 as well as various floating docks and other equipment in 2008. The total value of the contracts is approximately $18m.
