Hurtigruten is working towards drastically reducing and recycling edible food waste from its fleet operations. A specially designed reactor at one of its ports converts edible food waste into compost used to grow vegetables for Hurtigruten.The initiative encompasses a comprehensive approach to waste management, starting with the sorting of edible food waste onboard Hurtigruten's Original Coastal Express ships during their year-round schedule along the coast of Norway, calling at 34 ports from Bergen in the south to Kirkenes in the north.

Carnival Corporation has released its 14th annual sustainability report detailing how it achieved several 2030 environmental goals well in advance.The company is producing 10+% less absolute GHG emissions today than in 2011, its peak historical year, despite increasing capacity by roughly 30% since that time. Swedish shipping company Furetank announced it has signed a letter of intent with Eskilstuna Biogas, enabling the development of a new biogas plant producing around 5,000 tonnes of LBG annually.Furetank commits to buying at least 75% of the produced fuel for 10 years. Vow ASA subsidiary Scanship said it has been awarded a 7.8 million-euro contract ($8.8 million) for its cruise clean ship system with major European shipbuilder.The system will be used for wastewater purification, garbage handling and food waste processing. The Scanship systems will be installed on two mega sized cruise ships entering service in 2026 and 2027, being part of an ongoing six-ship newbuild program from Fincantieri for one of the larger Miami based shipowners. Høglund, the marine solutions and system integration company, has been awarded a contract to deliver biogas-ready fuel-gas supply systems (FGSS) for six Hurtigruten passenger ship retrofits.Høglund will work together with HB Hunte Engineering to design and engineer fully customized tank and FGSS solutions for each of the six vessels, optimized to run on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied biogas (LBG), according to a press release.Hurtigruten will use Høglund and HB Hunte’s FGSS solutions in tandem with large battery packs onboard its vessels, replacing its older engines which run on marine gas oil, it said.Hurtigruten, a player in the Arctic and Antarctic expedition cruise segment…

Already installed on over 500 vessels since its launch in early 2017, EnviroManager consolidates information  to assist vessels to comply with MARPOL regulations for discharges and emissions. EnviroManager includes the baseline information for each nation as required by  regulations. The display shows “distance from land” as measured from the official country baseline, as opposed to the shoreline which is identified on a navigational chart.

Cleaning up the wastewater stream on marine vessels isn’t just about removing hydrocarbons out of oily separators and bilges. Workboat galleys harbor a tremendous amount of FOGs (fats, oils and grease) that, if not properly disposed of, can be a health risk, damage equipment and add to overall operational costs. Even if vessels are equipped with sophisticated grease trap systems, the introduction of nontoxic, neutral pH biologic compounds into the trap and/or waste stream is a necessary step to reduce toxic buildup and environmental pollution.

A routine Port State Control inspection conducted by an AMSA marine surveyor at Fisherman Island in the Port of Brisbane revealed a record of the discharge of 0.03m3 of food waste within the Great Barrier Reef on October 8, 2014.

The global cleantech company Evac has been chosen to supply its total waste management system to the world’s largest civilian hospital ship, the Atlantic Mercy. Owned and operated by the nonprofit Mercy Ships, the ship will provide medical care in the poorest parts of Africa. The master and owners of the Hong Kong registered bulk carrier ANL Kardinia have been prosecuted for illegally dumping garbage in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Prosecuted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), One Armania Shipping Ltd. and the master of ANL Kardinia were found guilty on July 20 in the Townsville Magistrates Court on one charge each of illegally disposing of garbage under the Protection of the Sea (Prevention of Pollution from Ships) Act 1983. The illegal discharge took place on February 13, 2015 and was detected by an AMSA Inspector during a routine Port State Control inspection in Brisbane on February 16, 2015.

When it comes to marine sewage, it pays to measure. It turns out that the physical size of the equipment itself is not your only worry. Marine Sanitation Devices: (perhaps) the three dirtiest words in the nautical lexicon. Nevertheless, Marine Sanitary Devices – or MSD’s, as they are affectionately known – are pre-engineered, pre-packaged blackwater/greywater treatment systems. We don’t like to talk about it, we know that waste streams are treated and – we hope – that they are also in compliance. Installed on all manners of vessels, nowhere are these devices (arguably) as important as the ones that provide service on the myriad of inland and brown water workboats.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s decision to detain a Hong Kong flagged containership which dumped food waste in close proximity to Fraser Island in May was affirmed by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal at a hearing on November 25, 2016. AMSA detained the vessel OOCL Le Havre in Brisbane after a Port State Control inspection on May 24 found that its Safety Management System had failed to ensure crew had an adequate understanding of the rules and regulations related to the management and discharge of garbage at sea in accordance with the international convention for the prevention of pollution from ships (MARPOL). The inspection also found that on 23 May crew dumped 0.08 cubic meters of food waste into the ocean less than 3 nautical miles from the nearest land.
