ChartCo Introduces EnviroManager 5.4 At Europort
ChartCo introduced version 5.4 of its EnviroManager. Already installed on over 500 vessels since its launch in early 2017, EnviroManager consolidates information to assist vessels to comply with MARPOL regulations for discharges and emissions. EnviroManager includes the baseline information for each nation as required by regulations. The display shows “distance from land” as measured from the official country baseline, as opposed to the shoreline which is identified on a navigational chart.
Evac Acquires Uson Marine
Evac Group, the world’s leading provider of integrated waste, wastewater, and water management systems for the marine, offshore, and building industries, has acquired Uson Marine. The acquisition is expected to increase Evac’s market share in dry and wet waste management systems, as well as strengthen the Group’s position with regard to small and medium-sized marine and offshore vessels. Box Ship Detention Upheld after Appeal
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s decision to detain a Hong Kong flagged containership which dumped food waste in close proximity to Fraser Island in May was affirmed by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal at a hearing on November 25, 2016. AMSA detained the vessel OOCL Le Havre in Brisbane after a Port State Control inspection on May 24 found that its Safety Management System had failed to ensure crew had an adequate understanding of the rules and regulations related to the management and discharge of garbage at sea in accordance with the international convention for the prevention of pollution from ships (MARPOL). The inspection also found that on 23 May crew dumped 0.08 cubic meters of food waste into the ocean less than 3 nautical miles from the nearest land.

Galley Grease Harms Equipment – and the Environment
Cleaning up the wastewater stream on marine vessels isn’t just about removing hydrocarbons out of oily separators and bilges. Workboat galleys harbor a tremendous amount of FOGs (fats, oils and grease) that, if not properly disposed of, can be a health risk, damage equipment and add to overall operational costs. Even if vessels are equipped with sophisticated grease trap systems, the introduction of nontoxic, neutral pH biologic compounds into the trap and/or waste stream is a necessary step to reduce toxic buildup and environmental pollution.

Shipper Fined for Dumping Garbage in the Great Barrier Reef
The master and owners of the Hong Kong registered bulk carrier ANL Kardinia have been prosecuted for illegally dumping garbage in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Prosecuted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), One Armania Shipping Ltd. and the master of ANL Kardinia were found guilty on July 20 in the Townsville Magistrates Court on one charge each of illegally disposing of garbage under the Protection of the Sea (Prevention of Pollution from Ships) Act 1983. The illegal discharge took place on February 13, 2015 and was detected by an AMSA Inspector during a routine Port State Control inspection in Brisbane on February 16, 2015.
Evac's Total Waste Management for Atlantic Mercy
The global cleantech company Evac has been chosen to supply its total waste management system to the world’s largest civilian hospital ship, the Atlantic Mercy. Owned and operated by the nonprofit Mercy Ships, the ship will provide medical care in the poorest parts of Africa. Wärtsilä to Set-up Indonesia's first bio-LNG plant
Wärtsilä and two Indonesian partners have today signed a joint development agreement with the intention of creating the first ever bio-LNG plant in Indonesia. The co-signers of the agreement with Wärtsilä are PT Pertamina (Persero), a national energy company, and PT Godang Tua Jaya (GTJ), a waste utilization sector specialist company. Wärtsilä Oil & Gas Systems (WOGS) will conduct a feasibility study for the project to develop a mini bio-LNG plant with a capacity of 0,75 tons/hour, which corresponds to approximately 4 MW/hour in electrical production.

Maersk Container Industry Up For Two Innovation Prizes
An advanced insulation foam and ingenious ways to transport fresh food have helped make Maersk Container Industry (MCI) a finalist in two competition categories, CSR and innovation, at this year’s Containerization International Awards. MCI competes for the “Technological Innovation of the Year” prize in recognition of its automatic ventilation, AV+, which saves energy by controlling fresh air ventilation inside refrigerated containers. An affiliated technology, controlled atmosphere (CA), keeps track of how fruits and vegetables ripen and respire inside the container during transport.

Transport and distribution may account for between 5% and 20% of the loss depending on the specific region of the world. Technologies like Star Cool CA and AV+ are used to control a refrigeration container's temperature, humidity, air flow and air composition.

Evac can now supply the entire waste handling system for vessels and rigs, to accord with MARPOL Annex V regulations. The company say they can supply the entire waste handling system for vessels and rigs, covering both dry and wet waste, from food waste handling to onboard sanitary and wastewater treatment. From January 1st 2013, new requirements relating to the management waste of ships and rigs entered into force. All waste onboard, except food waste, has to be collected, or incinerated, according to the new IMO Marpol Annex V regulations. This requires storage space for waste onboard.

Bulk carrier 'Pantanal' owners & master fined for dumping food waste near Australia's Great Barrier Reef The master and owner of a ship that dumped garbage in the Great Barrier Reef marine park have been fined according to a Ninemsn Both pleaded guilty in the Townsville Magistrates Court to illegally dumping food waste from the Antiguan bulk carrier Pantanal in the park in July last year. The ship's master was fined $500, while the owner was fined $5000. Convictions were recorded against both men.
Floatel Books into Gibdock
The Norwegian-owned offshore accommodation vessel, Edda Fides, one of the most advanced and sophisticated vessels of its type in the world, has been dry-docked at Gibdock in Gibraltar for a week-long package of work at the yard. The ‘floatel’, owned by Østensjø Rederi, arrived at Gibdock on April 2nd and was docked the following day. The main scope of work involved disconnecting and lowering the starboard aft Voith Thruster and renewing the main thruster seal. Edda Fides has a unique monohull form to enable the positioning of the accommodation forward and the Voith thrusters to the stern.
Headworks Bio Inc. Contract for Allure of the Seas
Headworks Bio Inc. announced the signing of a contract with STX Europe in Turku, Finland, for the completion and commissioning of a wastewater treatment system for the Allure of the Seas cruise ship. The Allure of the Seas will be delivered to its owner, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, at the end of this year. Using innovative moving bed bioreactor (MBBR) and Return Activated Sludge technologies, the system is another step forward in the trend towards advanced onboard wastewater treatment and water reuse. Allure of the Seas is the sister ship to the Oasis of the Seas, also built by STX Europe for Royal Caribbean International. It will have capacity for 5,400 guests onboard in 2,700 staterooms with a crew contingent of 2,160 members.
