The 51st Kaiyo Maro (Photo: Navis)

ā€œNo new fishing vessel has been (added) during the period,ā€ says the email we get from Japanā€™s largest seafood company, Maruha Nichiro Corp. A year earlier, they had bought shares in New Zealand outfit, Sanford, which had just chartered a Nordic-looking vessel. Seafood rival, Nissui, had just done the same, buying New Zealand and Nordic. UK's First Boat with Duplex Silicone Coating

A Blyth Workcat patrol boat nearing completion for the Kent and Essex Inshore Fisheries Conservation Area (KEIFCA) has become the first vessel in the UK to be treated with Duplex fouling release. It also provides the benefit of a long lifespan that eliminates the need for the boat to be regularly hoisted-out for fresh coats of antifouling to be applied. This saving in operational costs willā€¦

Subaru Air Freights Parts, Circumvents U.S. Port Delays

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd , the maker of Subaru cars, said it would continue flying car parts to its U.S. factory beyond an initial arrangement through the end of February, as a labor dispute at U.S. West Coast ports delays shipments. The Japanese automaker had said earlier it was spending an extra 7 billion yen ($59 million) for one month from the end of January to fly components such as engines and transmissions on chartered cargo flights instead of shipping them. A Fuji Heavy spokesman said arrangements had been made to extend that into March, although he said it was unclear how long that would continue.   Reporting by Chang-Ran Kim

Logistics Suffer as U.S. Port Dispute Continues

Dozens of ships queuing to dock due to ports dispute; Honda slowing North American car production as parts held up. A labor dispute at ports on the U.S. West Coast is disrupting supply chains across the Pacific, forcing some Asian suppliers to resort to costly air freight and pushing up shipping rates as more freighters are caught up in long queues to dock. With ports near gridlock and cargo delays being felt throughout the U.S. economy, President Barack Obama on Saturday dispatched Labor Secretary Tom Perez to California to try to broker an agreement on a new contract between dockworkers and the group representing shippers and terminal operators. Ports along the coast, which between them handle nearly half of all U.S.

Japan Automakers Impacted by U.S. Port Dispute

Japanese automakers are being forced to ship some car parts to U.S. plants by expensive air cargo and tweak production processes as a protracted labor dispute at U.S. West Coast ports shows no signs of letting up. Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd's Subaru, the fastest-growing brand in the United States, said this week that it now had to shoulder an extra 7 billion yen ($60 million) in costs a month due to air freight, which has seen prices go up with the extra demand. "It looked like the labor talks were going well at one point but in recent days the slowdown has grown quite severe," Fuji Heavy Chief Financial Officer Mitsuru Takahashi said. He said that without the move to chartered cargo flights, the automaker's U.S. production would have come to a halt in mid-February.
