Ingram Barge Acquires 92 Barges from Investment Fund

Ingram Barge Company announced the acquisition of 92 barges, including 17 tank barges with 10,000 barrel capacity, 62 jumbo covered hopper barges with fiber lift covers, and 13 jumbo open hopper barges from an affiliate of Ospraie Special Opportunities Fund.  All of the acquired barges were built between 2004 and 2008. Ingram’s plans for the tank barges include deployment for use in a variety of liquid trades and plans for the hopper barges include deployment in the grain, utility, and various other dry cargo trades. www.ingrambarge.com

Three Hopper Barges for Van Oord

Vosta LMG in The Netherlands has been awarded a contract for the delivery of a complete engineering and component package for 3 hopper barges for Van Oord in The Netherlands. The complete order consists of the design and engineering of 10.000 m3 hopper barges, including the delivery of the bottom doors, electrical-, and hydraulic installation. The hopper barges are fitted with a hydraulic bottom door system and a special coupling system for the pusher tug. The barges will be built at COSCO shipyard Dalian, China. Installation and assembly of all critical components will be under VOSTA LMG supervision. Where possible, components are supplied through Chinese manufacturers with the assistance of the VOSTA LMG office in Zuhai.

T&T Bisso Wins Salvage Contract

The alliance between T&T MARINE SALVAGE of Galveston, TX, and BISSO MARINE, of New Orleans, LA, known as T&T BISSO, LLC has been awarded a contract to salvage two hopper barges which are presently sunk in the Mississippi River at mile 297 AHP LMR near Angola, LA. The alliance which recently participated in the emergency response effort to rescue the disabled BP THUNDERHORSE semi submersible rig in the Gulf of Mexico has again pooled equipment and resources to support the salvage of the hopper barges. T&T MARINE SALVAGE mobilized the D/B JOSIE T and BISSO MARINE mobilized the D/B AJAX and the C/B BIG EAGLE to the location last week, following the removal of the cargo, the barges will be raised and returned to the owner. The salvage operation is expected to take a few weeks.

Inland Salvage Inc. Completes Lightering and Salvage Operations of Sunken Hopper Barge. Inland Salvage Inc.recently completed the removal of approximately 1000 tons of structural scrap steel from a sunken hopper barge and subsequent salvage of the barge which had been obstructing a loading dock on the Mississippi River near LaPlace, LA. Immediately upon being notified by the dock's owner that Inland Salvage Inc. (ISI) had been appointed as the salvor, ISI responded to the sinking of the 195' hopper barge laden with 1,000 tons of scrap metal when the barge sank.

Donjon Welcomes New Tug, Caitlin Ann

On August 1, 2011, Donjon added the 2400-HP-class tug Caitlin Ann to its growing fleet to support the company’s dredging, marine salvage, bulk material transportation and marine demolition services. The addition of the Caitlin Ann increases the Donjon towboat fleet to 14 total vessels ranging from 1200 to 7000 horsepower.  In addition, Donjon also owns and operates five derrick barges with a maximum capacity of 1,000 tons, more than 40 deck and hopper barges, 3-4000-cubic yard split hull dump barges and numerous small vessels, floats and related marine craft.

Great Lakes Shipyard Secures Geo Gradel Contract

Great Lakes Shipyard was awarded a contract for drydocking and repairs by Geo Gradel & Co. for Tug JOHN FRANCIS on January 18, 2017. The tugboat was hauled out using the 770-MT Mobile Marine Travelift on January 19, 2017. Geo Gradel & Co. also awarded a contract to the Shipyard for drydocking and repairs for Hopper Barge Mobro 2000 on December 14, 2016. This contract includes significant metal repairs due to due to damages caused during the season. Work for both vessels is expected to be completed March 2017.

ACL Plans to Build New Covered Hopper Barges

American Commercial Lines Inc. (NASDAQ: ACLI) announced that the Company will build fifty covered hopper barges for use by its Transportation Services Division at the Company's Jeffboat manufacturing subsidiary in the first quarter of 2010. Commenting on the build plan, ACL President and CEO Mike Ryan stated, "We are executing the next phase of our long-term strategic plan. We recently completed the realignment of our field-based Transportation Services management team, establishing new northern and southern region headquarters locations. Now, we are beginning our dry barge replacement program in order to reduce the age of our fleet. This is an ideal time to build barges as we have the best steel prices that we have had in several years.

Well-known in the shipbuilding industry as a quality builder of various vessels and as a specialist in ship and barge repair, conversions and barge flaring, Lockport, La.-based Bollinger Shipyards has made a name for itself as a major builder of barges used on inland waterways and ocean-going uses. Stemming from the shipyard's growth are five contracts for 17 specialized large barges ranging in sizes from 240 to 365 ft. (73.1 x 111.2 m) Some were recently delivered, while others will be sent off before year-end 2000. According to Lynn Falgout, vice president and general manager of Bollinger Marine Fabricators, "Until April 1997, we had had a limited barge program in eight shipyards.

Shearer & Assoc., Bristol Harbor Form The Shearer Group

Ed Shearer, P.E., President of Shearer & Assoc., Inc., and Greg Beers, P.E., President of Bristol Harbor Group, Inc., have announced the formation of The Shearer Group, Inc., a new corporate entity that will provide naval architecture, marine engineering, marine surveying and professional engineer services to clients in the inland and offshore marine industry. The Shearer Group, Inc. is a combination of the best of what Mr. Shearer has spent the past several decades building at Shearer & Assoc., Inc.; and that which Mr. Beers and his partners Cory Wood and Andrew Tyska have built at Bristol Harbor Group, Inc. over the past 15 years.

Hung Hom Dredging Kicks Off

Marine works involving dredging operations will be carried out near the Hong Kong Coliseum, Hung Hom for the next ten months, according to mardep.gov.hk. The works will be performed by one grab dredger and one hopper barge. One tug and one workboat will provide assistance. The works will be carried out by one grab dredger and one hopper barge, with one tug providing assistance, says Marine Department Notice. The number of vessels engaged in the works will change from time to time to suit operational requirements.

Memco Barge Line Sold

American Electric Power Co. Inc. signed a definitive agreement with Progress Energy Inc. to buy its MEMCO Barge Line Inc. for $270 million, in a deal AEP said would immediately add to its earnings. Columbus, Ohio-based AEP said its AEP Resources Inc. wholly-owned subsidiary will buy 1,200 hopper barges and 30 towboats from Electric Fuels Corp., a Progress subsidiary, making AEP one of the leading barge operators. "The coupling of the MEMCO barge assets with our existing fleet will add earnings and significant information flow in the sometimes-neglected transportation component of our business," said Paul Addis, executive vice president of AEP's Wholesale activities.

SENESCO Announces Barge Contract

The Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corporation (SENESCO) has signed a major barge contract for construction of a 171-ft. hopper barge that will have a holding capacity of 2,750 cubic yards. Construction has already begun and is expected to be completed this fall. The barge is being built for Disch Construction of Summit, N.J. who will used the barge to transport dredge spoils. This contract coincides with SENESCO’s executive team expansion which includes the hiring of their first CFO. “The growing reputation of SENESCO within the U.S. shipbuilding industry continues to generate new opportunities for our 200 employees,” said SENESCO president Bob Jarvis. The Disch contract represents SENESCO’s 32nd new construction contract since it completed its first barge in 2000.

Song Thu Lays Keel for New Dredger

The construction of a new vessel of dredging fleet, project TSHD 2000, has been launched to the RS class in Da Nang, Vietnam. The keel laying ceremony was held at Song Thu Corporation shipyard November 21, 2014. It was attended by Andrey Tarasenko, General Director of FSUE Rosmorport, and Pavel Shikhov, RS Chief Operating Officer. The ship has been designed by Damen Shipyards Gorinchem. RS class notation: KM Ice1 R1 AUT2 hopper dredger. A new vessel of dredging fleet is intended for extraction and removal of spoil, dredging of fairways, channels and roads to keep waterways safe.

Benoi Basin Dredging through March 2014

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has advised that dredging works will be carried out at Benoi Basin from December 13, 2013-March 12, 2014. According to the Port Marine Notice No. Dredging works will be carried out by the grab dredgers. The grab dredgers will be held by four-point anchoring system. The dredgers, with hopper barges in attendance, will have a circular safety working zone of 50-meter radius centered at the dredgers. Dredged materials will be transported to the designated dumping ground by the hopper barges. During the operation, the dredgers will be attended by tug boat. The tug boats will be used to shift the dredger. A safety boat will be deployed in the vicinity of the working area to warn other craft of the project.

Singapore Dredging at Pioneer Shipyard

Dredging works are underway at the Pioneer Shipyard off the West Jurong Channel Singpore and will continue until 31 July. According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore Port Marine Notice No. Dredging work will be carried out by dredgers held in position with anchors. The dredgers, with hopper barges in attendance, will have a circular safety working zone of 50-metre radius centred at the dredgers. Dredged material will be transported to the designated dumping ground by the hopper barges assisted by pusher tugs. During the operation, the dredger will be attended by tug boats. The tug boats will be used to shift the dredger. A safety boat will be deployed in the vicinity of the working area to warn other craft of the project.

Dredging work will be carried out at Keppel Shipyard Benoi Road, off West Jurong Channel, from 28 July to 30 September. Dredging works will be carried out by the grab dredgers. The grab dredgers will be held by 4-point anchoring system and each anchor position will be marked by a yellow buoy, Fl Y 3s. The dredgers, with hopper barges in attendance, will have a circular safety working zone of 50-metre radius centred at the dredgers. Dredged materials will be transported to the designated dumping ground by the hopper barges. During the operation, the dredgers will be attended by tug boat.

Donjon Marine Refloats Sunken Barge 2001 on Kill Van Kull

In early August, the fully loaded hopper barge 2001 sank in approximately 25 feet of water while transiting the Kill Van Kull, a waterway that connects Newark Bay to New York Harbor. The barge was loaded with approximately 1,500 tons of shredded steel, as reported by owners. Donjon removed the cargo, rigged the barge for lift, and later refloated it and returned it to its owners. Donjon to Build Hopper Barges for Sterling

Donjon Shipbuilding and Repair, located in Erie, Pennsylvania, was recently awarded a contract by Sterling Equipment of Quincy, Massachusetts to construct two hopper barges, with an option for a third. The principal dimensions of these barges are 225’ long x 42’ wide x 12’ deep. Delivery of the barges is to be made by the middle to end of August 2013. Donjon Shipbuilding & Repair's facility, equipped with 1,250 ft. by 120 ft. by 22 ft. dry dock, is one of the largest shipyards of its kind on the Great Lakes. The facility includes 4,000 ft. of pier space and more than 200,000 square ft.

Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Awarded Project

Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Italian firm Alberto ALBERT was awarded a project to develop for Italian Logistic firm MOVENDO International the transport of gravels for the concrete to be used during the extension of Panama Canal. The service began on January and for this are used two sister Chinese hopper barges 91.4m * 24.4m * 5.5m conceived for the transport of basalt gravels in bulk on deck from Pacific Side to Atlantic Side of the Gatun lake. The system is composed by a standard tug pushing the barge stern by means of a connection properly designed, RINA classed and builded in Panama. Once loaded on board the gravels by GUPC crushing plant the barge is pushed to Atlantic side berth were the gravels ( 7800t each voyage ) are discharged by means of three conveyors…

Coast Guard Responds to Tug Fire

The Coast Guard is investigating a tug fire that occurred yesterday south of Demopolis, Ala. on the Tombigbee Waterway. The Alabama Marine Police notified the coast guard Monday morning when the tug, Nonnie, pushing six empty hopper barges had caught on fire and was drifting south on the Tombigbee Waterway. The Coast Guard Cutter, Wedge, from Demopolis, an HU-25 Falcon jet from Aviation Training Center Mobile, and pollution response and investigation teams from Marine Safety Office Mobile were immediately dispatched to the scene. The vessel, owned and operated by Equipment Chartering Company inc. in bay St. Louis, Miss., was en route with the barges to a quarry on the Tennessee River from Back Bay Biloxi, Miss.
