Washburn & Doughty Wins Hybrid Tug Orders

East Boothbay, Maine based Washburn & Doughty said it has secured a contract with Harbor Docking and Towing, of Lake Charles, La., to design and build two 93’ x 38’ Hybrid Z Drive Tugs. The 93’ x 38’ hull is a proven design with 18 tugs in operation and 4 under construction. The vessel will be built as a Harbor Assist Vessel as defined in USCG Subchapter M and admeasure less than 200 gross tons U.S. regulatory tonnage. Caterpillar Marine will provide a ‘stem-to-stern’ Cat content hybrid propulsion system, with support from both Milton Cat and Louisiana Cat in the sales effort. Wärtsilä Developing Hybrid Tug for Brazil

Wärtsilä said it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a new environmentally friendly tug design for a new port facility being built in the Brazilian city of São Mateus. Ulstein Group has designed and built two new anchor handling and offshore support vessels with a new breed of hybrid propulsion system for shipowner Olympic Shipping. The new Ulstein hybrid propulsion concept has taken the potential of the rather complex hybrid propulsion concept to completely new levels of performance. The Ulstein hybrid propulsion concept combines the best properties of both DE and DM into one system. This includes DM attributes of higher efficiency and better performance at high loads, along with the DE trait of excellent fuel consumption at low loads.

The Fairplay fleet in Rotterdam welcomes two new members: The hybrid tractor tugs Fairplay IX and Fairplay XI, each equipped with a SCHOTTEL hybrid propulsion system including two SCHOTTEL Rudderpropellers SRP 4000 with hybrid gearboxes, two electric motors and an integrated steering control system, specialized for hybrid propulsion. Tugs are required to fulfill a variety of daily tasks, covering the full power spectrum, from stand by periods to towing operations. The installed hybrid propulsion concept enables the Fairplay tugs to operate with an optimal power output, SCHOTTEL said.

Patent Granted for Hybrid Propulsion System

Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA) and Foss Maritime receive U.S. patent protection for hybrid marine propulsion and energy management system. Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA) and Foss Maritime Company with their technology partner XeroPoint Energy, have received U.S. patent protection for their hybrid propulsion and energy management system. AKA, a Canadian system integrator and marine engineering company partnered with Foss, which owns and operates one of the largest tug and barge fleets on the U.S. West Coast, in developing this innovative technology.

Corvus Energy Wins Order for Battery Hybrid Ferries

Scandlines ferries designed with battery hybrid propulsion to operate on the Rostock-Gedser commercial route. Corvus Energy, Siemens AS and Scandlines have announced the award of the energy storage system contract for the M/V Berlin and M/V Copenhagen battery hybrid ferries currently being built at the Danish shipyard FAYARD. The new vessels M/V Berlin and M/V Copenhagen will each use a 1,050VDC, 1.5MWh Energy Storage System (ESS) consisting of 231 Corvus Energy AT6500 advanced lithium polymer batteries. The batteries will be integrated with a Siemens converter system and together they form an Energy Storage System that will be powered by four diesel gensets (one less than a non-hybrid design).

Corvus to Power Hybrid Fish Farm Processing Vessel

Corvus Energy has been selected by Wärtsilä as the supplier of a lithium ion based energy storage system (ESS) for the world’s first full service hybrid fish farm processing and transport vessel. The Orca Energy ESS from Corvus will supply electrical power to the vessel's propulsion system to enable environmentally-friendly and lower cost operations. Wärtsilä has been contracted to deliver the ship design and hybrid propulsion system for the vessel to be built at the Balenciaga shipyard in Spain, on behalf of Hav Line AS of Norway. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in summer 2018.

Hybrid Ferries Will Use Voith Schneider Propellers

In summer, 2013, the world's first two ferries with a hybrid propulsion system will be put into service. Owned by CMAL, they are being built by Ferguson Shipbuilders in Glasgow. Each of the hybrid vessels will be equipped with two Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP) with an input power of 375 kW per propeller. With its hybrid concept, the shipyard aims to reduce the ferry's CO2 emissions by up to 20 percent. The vessels will be the first of their kind to combine a diesel-electric propulsion system with lithium ion battery technology. The ferries will operate on various routes in the Scottish waters, which are characterized by strong currents and heavy winds.

Siemens to Equip Italian Coast Guard

The Italian shipyard Cantieri Navali Megaride has recently commissioned Siemens to equip a 65-m-long offshore supply vessel from the Italian coast guard with the Siship EcoProp hybrid propulsion system. EcoProp includes two main gear units, electric propulsion motors and the hybrid propulsion control system. Diesel engines are combined with electric drive components, each of which has an output of 180 kilowatts per shaft. Siemens has developed this propulsion solution specifically to meet the requirements of smaller ships by making it easily installable in tight spaces. The company will be responsible for the project management, engineering and commissioning of the complete diesel-electric propulsion system, which is scheduled for the beginning of 2012. http://www.siemens.com/marine

The United States Navy commissioned its new LHD 8 ship USS Makin Island on October 24, 2009 in San Diego, California. Battery Hybrid Patrol Boat under Development

PBES and NORIS Automation GmbH have partnered on the hybrid drive systems for Europe’s first battery hybrid patrol vessel. The 45m long vessel is being built at Baltic Workboats Shipyard in Estonia and will be delivered with 273kWh of PBES Power 65 battery modules. “PBES batteries provide hours of low speed propulsion with reduced sound and heat signature as well as greatly increased efficiency,” said Brent Perry, PBES Chief Executive Officer. “The vessel is first of many that we will be seeing in law enforcement.

EPD, Siemens Form Solutions Partnership

Electronic Power Design, Inc. (EPD) and Siemens Industry, Inc. Drive Technologies today announced that the companies have formed a solutions partnership for Siemens ELFA R hybrid propulsion systems. Siemens recently released its newly designed ELFA hybrid propulsion system, which offers considerably enhanced fuel consumption, range, redundancy, and maneuverability. The Siemens ELFA successfully closes the gap between large merchant vessels and small recreational and commercial crafts traditionally powered by mechanical propulsion solutions. The standardized plug and operate solution further reduces the time/effort required for installation and integration into the vessel.

GE LM2500+ Gas Turbines to Power Naval Ship

GE Marine announces that its LM2500+ marine aeroderivative gas turbines have been selected by Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (NGSB), , to power the U.S. Navy’s new LHA 6 amphibious assault ship. The LHA 6 ship’s hybrid mechanical-electric propulsion system will consist of two LM2500+ gas turbines, each rated at 35,290 shaft horsepower at U.S. Navy standard day conditions (100oF), and two, 5,000 horsepower auxiliary propulsion motors. The LM2500+ gas turbines will be manufactured at GE’s Evendale facility.

Bourbon Chooses Offshore Ship Designers

Offshore Ship Designers has been chosen to design a series of six new fuel-efficient seismic support/chase vessels ordered by French offshore major Bourbon to be built at Dubai’s Grandweld Shipyards. The 53 m vessels will have hybrid propulsion systems, slow speed escort and support work, and a high degree of maneuvrability. The vessels will be chartered by Bourbon to CGGVeritas with delivery of the first vessels set for the end of 2012. They will be used to support the fleet of CGGVeritas seismic survey vessels operating all over the world, providing them with services including crew change, fuel delivery, storage, assistance and support during at-sea maintenance operations. •    Transfer of fuel, potable water, dry and refrigerated stores and general cargo to the mother ship.
