Meyer Turku Delivers for TUI Cruises
TUI Cruisesâ new 315 m flagship was delivered today from Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku.The fifth Mein Schiff cruise ship to be built by Meyer Turku for German owner TUI Cruises, the new Mein Schiff 1 is based on a new design created as an evolution from the existing Mein Schiff series.The builderâs architecture and engineering team, working together with TUI Cruises and its architects, used the previously delivered Mein Schiff 3 and Mein Schiff 4 as a starting point when beginning to work on the Mein Schiff 1 design in 2015.
IMO Reaches Deal to Cut CO2 Emissions
The United Nations shipping agency reached an agreement on Friday to cut carbon emissions, following years of slow progress. The compromise plan, which will cut emissions by at least 50 percent by 2050 compared with 2008 levels, fell short of more ambitious targets. Kitack Lim, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), said the adoption of the strategy "would allow future IMO work on climate change to be rooted in a solid basis". The IMO said it would also be pursuing efforts towards phasing out CO2 emissions entirely.
Mitsubishi, Wärtsilä Joins for Improved Power and Propulsion Solution
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Equipment Co., LTD (MHI-MME) and the smart technology group Wärtsilä have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the commercial marketing of a new energy solution for ships. The solution combines innovative technologies from both companies to produce greater power generation capacity and higher propeller propulsion for marine vessels. By integrating MHI-MME's waste heat recovery and energy saving power generation system (WHRS) with Wärtsilä's operational control technology for shaft generator systems, the new solution results in more energy efficient ship navigation and an improved Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).
Sulzer Acquires License for Totalâs Wash Tank Technology
Sulzerâs Chemtech division has been granted a license covering the Total-patented Wash Tank Technology for Oil Processing. The main purpose of this technology is to enhance the removal of water, salt and contaminants from oil and emulsions, by a controlled distribution of the feed into the bottom of a hull tank of an FPSO/FSO/FPU which transforms the water-in-oil dispersion into an oil-in-water one where high efficiency phase separation takes place more easily. The technology also involves a simplification of the topsides crude oil process.
Op/Ed: Shipping's Energy Challenge
There is no more economically and environmentally efficient way of transporting the worldâs goods than by sea. Compared to air or road freight, based on per ton of cargo shipped, shippingâs carbon footprint is small. Yet with the 60,000 or so ships that transport 80 percent of the worldâs goods emitting about 1.12bn tons of CO2 each year, almost 4.5 percent of all global greenhouse gas emissions, it is unequivocal that we need a viable way of reducing our environment impact. As other sectors reduce their carbon footprint shippingâs is likely to increase as an overall percentage.
GloMEEP Energy Efficiency Project Gets Underway
The first national workshop under the Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships GloMEEP), Project, which aims to support increased uptake and implementation of energy-efficiency measures for shipping, has been held in Georgia. Georgia is one of the Lead Pilot Countries for the project, which aims to build understanding and knowledge of technical and operational energy-efficiency measures to lead maritime transport into a low-carbon future. The national workshop in Batumi, Georgia (15-17 December), focused on raising awareness of Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), in particular the energy-efficiency regulations in chapter 4.

The Meyer Werft Germany, Meyer Turku, STX France, and Fincantieri shipyards have all placed orders with Wärtsilä for the supply of fresh water generators to a total of seven cruise ships. The orders were placed between September and November 2014. Delivery of the Wärtsilä systems is scheduled to commence in May 2015 and will be completed by autumn 2017. Wärtsilä's delivery comprises a total of 10 large MSF distillation systems with unit capacities spanning from 115 tons/day to 900tons/day, and 4 Single Stage Desalination systems (SSD) with unit capacities of 30 tons/day. The Wärtsilä Serck Como fresh water generators produce the fresh water needed onboard a cruise ship for deck washing, laundry, cabins, swimming pools, and technical applications that need high quality water.
