Herculaneum Port Site Cleared for Redevelopment as Intermodal Hub

A 300-acre property along the Mississippi River in Herculaneum, Missouri recently received Port District zoning making way for redevelopment as an intermodal transportation hub and industrial park.Located on the shipping lanes of the Mississippi River, the site has been utilized since the 1700s as a port. With its easy access for barge loading and offloading and the siteā€™s proximity to early lead mines in adjacent Washington County, under early French ownership the port was utilized to ship lead cannonballs and shot to Europe to support Napoleanā€™s army.

Russia Hits Grain Facilities at Ukrainian Danube River Port

Russian drones struck Ukrainian grain facilities at the Danube River port of Izmail overnight in what a senior official said on Wednesday was a systematic attempt by Moscow to prevent Kyiv exporting grain to the world.Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said the port's export capacity had been reduced by 15% and that 13,000 metric tons of grain had been destroyed.Grain facilities in the Odesa region on the Black Sea also came under fire in the eighth wave of attacks on Ukrainianā€¦

Russia Strikes Port Facilities in Ukraine's Izmail

Infrastructure Funding Opportunities for Small Ports

In the William M. (Mac) Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2021, Congress amended the Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) administered by the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) to reserve to smaller ports 18% of the amounts appropriated for grants under the PIDP, and increased this percentage to 25% in the NDAA for FY 2022. This replaced the minimum dollar threshold for PIDP grants of the lesser of $10 million or 10% of the total amount appropriated for the PIDP for a fiscal year.

New Cutter Suction Dredger Named in Bulgaria

An official naming ceremony was held in Bulgaria last Thursday for Yantra, a new cutter suction dredger (CSD) built to help maintain Danube water depths. Damen supplied the modular CSD 500 dredger following a European tender.The naming ceremony was performed by the Dutch ambassador to Bulgaria, Bea ten Tusscher. As Godmother of the dredger she stated that the task to be performed by the dredger ā€“ keeping the Bulgarian stretch of the Danube navigable ā€“ is an important one. Even more so as the ceremony took place in Ruse, the largest inland port of Bulgaria.

Alexander Cairo Port Completes Project Labor Agreement

The construction of a new inland port at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers took another step forward on Tuesday as the Alexander Cairo Port District completed a project labor agreement (PLA) with the Illinois AFL-CIO. The project labor agreement ensures that more than 500 jobs created by the construction of the Cairo port will be filled by local Illinois union workers.The Alexander-Cairo port represents one of the largest investments in Southern Illinois in decades.

The Mississippi State Port Authority (MSPA) Board of Commissioners has named Jon Nass the new CEO and executive director of the Port of Gulfport, following a national search led by Tim McNamara, head of Odgers Berndtsonā€™s Transportation and Infrastructure Practice in Washington, D.C. Plaquemines Port to Build Mississippi River Container Terminal

Plaquemines Port Harbor and Terminal District (PPHTD) said it has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with several potential partners to development a multi-modal container terminal on the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Parish, La.The signing of the LOI kicks off a six-month due diligence period during which the parties will conduct multiple studies prior to making a final investment decision (FID).The proposed container terminal would encompass up to 1,000 acres and 8,200 feet of Mississippi River frontage just 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.

Strong Volumes Drive Growth for SC Ports

South Carolina Ports Authority (SC Ports) reported a stellar performance in the first four months of the fiscal year backed by strong volumes in both containerized and vehicular cargo.S.C. Ports moved 217,360 twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) across the Wando Welchopens in a new window and North Charlestonopens in a new window container terminals in October. SCPA has moved 855,959 TEUs since July, a 7% increase year-over-year.As measured by the total number of boxes handled, SCPA moved 122,591 pier containers in October for a total of 484,549 pier containers in fiscal 2020, up nearly 7% from a year ago.S.C.
