Wärtsilä Voyage has signed a contract to deliver radio and integrated navigation systems for 10 icebreaking liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers to be constructed for the Arctic LNG-2 project.The order was placed in January 2021 and is now in process of execution, in partnership with South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries Co. Ltd shipyard. The new contract is an extension of the announcement made last summer, where Wärtsilä Voyage equipped five LNG carriers with integrated bridge systems under the same project.

The Dutch shipping company Spliethoff selected Raytheon Anschütz to engineer and deliver Synapsis NX integrated navigation systems (INS) for six new ice-classed multipurpose vessels scheduled to be delivered in 2019. Spliethoff’s new R-type vessels are built at the Zhejiang Ouhua Shipbuiling in accordance with the polar code and the LR NAV1 notation requirements to ensure safe operations in remote regions, including the Arctic. Wärtsilä said it has secured contracts to provide a scope of power and navigational control solutions for three new 2,800 passenger cruise vessels being built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy for Virgin Voyages, the latest of the international Virgin Group's travel businesses. An order for Wärtsilä engines, hybrid exhaust cleaning scrubber systems and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems was booked in 2016, followed by an order for the Wärtsilä integrated navigation systems in March 2017.

FLIR Maritime announced recently that it has been awarded a $50 million indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract to provide marine electronics systems under the U.S. Coast Guard’s Scalable Integrated Navigation Systems 2 (SINS-2) program over a five-year period providing the purchaser a right to extend delivery for an additional five years. FLIR will provide electronics systems that will be standard fit on over 2,000 U.S. Coast Guard vessels, ranging from small-class boats through large cutter-class vessels. The systems include Raymarine multi-function navigation displays, radars, sonars, remote instrument displays, and autopilots.

The German navigation system integrator Raytheon Anschütz has won a contract for the supply of a Synapsis Integrated Navigation System (INS) to an advanced research vessel. VARD Holding Limited, a major global designer and shipbuilder of specialized vessels, with their subsidiary VARD Electro AS, have selected Raytheon Anschütz’ Synapsis INS for a new research  vessel. The Synapsis INS is part of a large equipment and electrical installation package, which VARD Electro AS will provide to Cochin Shipyard Ltd.

Thales, a major system integrator in Canada, has chosen Raytheon Anschütz as the supplier of the Integrated Navigation System (INS) for the Canadian Coast Guard’s (CCG) new Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels (OFSV). As part of the OFSV program, three new vessels are being built for the CCG at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards. The 63-metre vessels are designed to operate in the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic Oceans. Their mission profile is to conduct fishing and acoustic surveys and collect oceanographic data to monitor changes in the ecosystem.

German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz has secured a contract for the delivery of the Synapsis Integrated Navigation System (INS) to a Crew Change Vessel (CCV). The vessel is being built for the Danish shipping company Esvagt by Astilleros Zamakona Shipyard in Spain. The vessel, used for crew changes at sea, is planned to be delivered in the second quarter of 2017. Havyard Ship Design & Solutions AS, in accordance to the shipowner, is responsible for ship design and delivery of system packages.

The extensive global network of Furuno service centers, subsidiaries and distributors was one of the reasons that Holland America Line (HAL) chose Furuno when it was time to retrofit their cruise ships with the very latest in a fully integrated navigation system. After considerable research in cruise ship navigation electronics, HAL selected the Furuno bridge solution and engaged Radio Holland to procure and install the equipment, starting with their first ship, the MS Westerdam. The large bridge features an impressive list of equipment including four Chart Radars (two X-Band and two S-Band), two ECDIS charting systems with Conning displays, an Autopilot, two IMO DGPS receivers, two AIS transmitters, a Track Control System to drive the Azipods and three Remote Sensor Displays.

The German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz announced new contracts for the delivery of Synapsis Integrated Navigation Systems (INS) to five 14,500TEU Container Vessels built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Co.Ltd. The new vessels will be owned by Shanghai-based COSCO Container Lines Co.Ltd. and are planned to enter operation from September 2016 to December 2017. Raytheon Anschütz has won the contracts through its Shanghai Representative Office. Each ship set will consist of X- and S-band radars and seven Synapsis NX Multifunctional Workstations in various configurations.

The German navigation system integrator Raytheon Anschütz has won a contract to supply the latest generation of IMO-certified Integrated Navigation Systems (INS) to three car carriers built by the Croatian shipbuilder Uljanik Brodogradiliste. The Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs) will be owned by Cayman Island based Auto Marine Transport Inc. and are scheduled for entering service from end of 2016. The new PCTCs will operate under a long-term charter of Siem Car Carriers AS. Each of the vessels has capacity to carry up to 7,000 cars.

German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz announced the launch of navigation system innovations as well as improvements to existing technologies for this year’s SMM. The world’s first IMO-certified Integrated Navigation System (INS), Synapsis Intelligent Bridge Control, will take the center stage at the Raytheon Anschütz booth. About two years after product launch, more than 100 Synapsis systems have been contracted and more than half of them are already in operation.

e-Navigation aims to harmonize navigation systems and ultimately make the mariners’ job easier, but its implementation will necessitate extensive changes to maritime training. Dr. Michael Baldauf of the World Maritime University, discusses the reasons for change, progress made so far, and further changes that will need to be made to reap the benefits of e-Navigation. In recent years, bridges have become increasingly ‘smart’ with a plethora of new equipment, systems and interfaces.

Marine navigation and communications specialist MARIS AS, of Norway and Chinese marine electronics company New Sunrise Co., Ltd. (NSR), of Suzhou, have signed an agreement that establishes MARIS as the largest ECDIS original equipment manufacturer in the world. The OEM deal, formalized at December’s Marintec 2013 in Shanghai, will see NSR produce MARIS ECDIS software and supply it in combination with NSR hardware. NSR has developed a PC and Monitor specific to maritime applications.

The platform supply vessel Blue Guardian was delivered from Ulstein to Blue Ship Invest on June 28, 2013. The vessel is contracted to work in the North Sea. Blue Guardian is the fifth in a series of six platform supply vessels (PSV) of the PX121 design from Ulstein Verft, and the vessel is under the management of Remøy Shipping. From mid-July, the ship has been contracted by Det Norske Oljeselskap ASA and Repsol Exploration respectively, to support the jack-up rig Maersk Giant in its work on two subsea wells on the Norwegian continental shelf in the North Sea.

While the Integrated Bridge increasingly plays a bigger role in various shipbuilding programs, in many cases the degree of integration can be limited and does not allows a fully functional integration of different navigation systems or further ship systems on the bridge. In tandem there has been an increasing demand for higher level integrated bridge systems, which was reasonably driven by more sophisticated and safety-sensitive vessels such as cruise ships, specialized vessels and few oil tankers.

OSI Maritime Systems contracted to deliver integrated navigation systems to DSME for Indonesian Navy Type 209 SSK Program submarines. OSI's contract is with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), South Korea who will build three Type 209 diesel submarines (SSK) for the Indonesian Navy. Under the terms of the agreement, OSI will deliver three Integrating Navigation and Tactical Systems, including ECPINS-W Sub software which the manufacturers say is the most advanced navigation software in the world specifically designed for the unique requirements of subsurface navigation. Ulstein Verft delivered Blue Thunder, the fourth of six medium-sized platform supply vessels of the PX121 design from Ulsteinto Blue Ship Invest, on Monday, May 13, 2013. Owned by Blue Ship Invest, a wholly-owned company in Ulstein Group, the platform supply vessel (PSV) is commercially and technically under the management of Atlantic Offshore. At SMM 2012, Raytheon Anschütz has honored their Croatian representative Crocon for the 100th Integrated Bridge System sold. The one hundredth delivery of an Integrated Bridge System was for the second newbuild of a Heavy Lift Carrier for Dutch company Jumbo Shipping at Brodosplit shipyard in Split. The IBS will be of the new Synapsis Bridge Control series and in compliance with IMO’s new Performance Standards for Integrated Navigation Systems. Crocon has its roots in the marine business as an agency and representative of world leading suppliers and manufacturers on the Croatian market.

Synapsis Bridge Control, the new generation of the Raytheon Anschütz bridge system, is the world’s first navigation system which has been type approved according to IMO’s new Performance Standards for Integrated Navigation Systems (INS). In an official ceremony, the nominated body Germanischer Lloyd (GL) handed over the type approval to Raytheon Anschütz beginning of May 2012. The INS Performance Standards are specified in the IMO resolution MSC.252(83) and apply to all newbuildings since 1st January 2011 where Integrated Navigation Systems are installed.

After delivering its first vessel for the U.S. Navy 18 months ago, Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, has delivered the last of 12, 64-ft screening escort vessels, operated by the U.S. Coast Guard, with the mission of securing high-value Naval assets in domestic ports. The all-aluminum boat, like its sisters, features a C. Raymond-Hunt-designed deep-V hull, with a CPI Marine fender system, and is powered by twin MTU diesel engines and connected to Hamilton water-jets. Top speed is over 30 knots.

Raytheon Systems Limited, Harlow together with Raytheon Anschütz has been awarded the contract for the In-Service Support (ISS) of the Integrated Bridge and Navigation Systems for the Royal Navy’s new Type 45 Daring class destroyers . Raytheon Anschütz will be responsible for total maintenance and repair of these systems on board the vessels until at least 2016. The Type 45 destroyers are being built by the British company BVT Surface Fleet, who also selected Raytheon for In-Service Support. The contract guarantees the Royal Navy a maximum uptime of their new ships at predictable operation costs, depending on performance-based payments and a volume control for ship usage.
