Langh Tech Researches Ways to Reduce CO2 Emissions Using SOx Scrubbers

In view of the upcoming CO2 emission regulations, Langh Tech has started researching the possibility of carbon capture on board vessels. The Finnish company said first tests have been successfully performed on board one of the vessels in sister company Langh Ship’s fleet, utilizing the existing Langh Tech hybrid scrubber installed on board.Langh Tech revealed Thursday it has conducted several preliminary tests of capturing CO2 emitted by a vessel’s main engine by the means of using an existing Langh Tech closed loop SOx scrubber system.

Langh Ship Orders Three New Ships

Finnish shipping company Langh Ship announced it has ordered three 7,800 dwt newbuild cargo ships from Wuhu Shipyard in China.The first vessel is expected to be delivered in summer 2023 followed by its two sisters soon thereafter.The vessels will operate in a regular service between Outokumpu’s steel mills in northern Finland and the Netherlands. Langh Tech Debuts Ballast Water Management System

Finland-based Langh Tech announced the launch of its new ballast water management system using fine filtration and UV-C irradiation.The system, tailored for retrofit vessels, crowded spaces and extremely challenging operating conditions, was developed in-house on a fast schedule – in less than a year from first ideas to product launch.“During autumn 2020 we started thinking that there might be a need for even more compact systems than the present ones on the market, so we decided to do one,” said Langh Tech Commercial Director Laura Langh-Lagerlöf.

Langh Tech Delivers Scrubbers for 12 NORDEN Vessels

Langh Tech said it will deliver SOx scrubber systems for a dozen vessels owned by Danish shipowner Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S, marking the Finnish scrubber manufacturer’s largest deal so far.Langh Tech Oy Ab will supply for retrofit four tankers and eight bulk carriers in the NORDEN- fleet with SOx scrubbers of open loop-type.The tankers have two boilers and a total of six exhaust gas sources are connected to the scrubber. Automation enables the scrubber plant to be operated in two exhaust gas cleaning modes corresponding to 0.1 or 0.5 percent sulphur in the fuel.

Langh Tech Debuts New Water Treatment Systems

Langh Tech’s new generation of water treatment systems has been launched with upgraded membrane technology to increase water cleaning capacity. In 2017, Langh Tech launched a second generation of water treatment systems based on a new type of membrane filter elements. With the new elements, Langh Tech said a 50 percent increase in water cleaning capacity can be reached compared to the previous elements, without increasing the size of the water treatment units. Langh Tech Scrubbers for Norwegian Cruise Line Newbuilds

Finnish manufacturer and supplier of scrubber solutions Langh Tech will deliver scrubber systems to two new cruise vessels on order at Meyer Werft in Papenburg for (NCL). The two newbuildings of NCL’s Breakaway Plus class will be equipped with Langh Tech’s hybrid type scrubbers, enabling unrestricted operation in closed loop mode. DeltaLangh Bought by Langh Tech

Langh Tech has bought Deltamarin Ltd’s share of the previously jointly owned DeltaLangh Ltd, which manufactures scrubbers and water treatment systems. “The cooperation with Deltamarin continues and Deltamarin Floating Construction can still provide turnkey scrubber installations,” said Laura Langh-Lagerlöf. Emissions Scrubber Receives Class Approval

Langh Ship received final class approval from Germanischer Lloyd for its exhaust gas cleaning system on m/s Laura (pictured), a 1996-built a 6,500 DWT general cargo vessel equipped with a 6 MW main engine. Langh Ship is a shipping company that has developed its own closed loop scrubber. The system uses caustic soda to neutralize the SOx in the exhaust gas and cleans the process water so that it can be led to the sea. The residual is collected in such a dry form that the compact waste can be transported to the nearest waste treatment plant.

Bore RoRo Ship to Get DeltaLangh Scrubber System

DeltaLangh has been assigned to deliver Deltamarin Floating Construction Ltd. with an exhaust gas cleaning (scrubber) system to be installed onboard the Ro-Ro vessel M/V Bore Song of Bore Ltd. The delivery consists of a combined closed and open loop scrubber system for 12MW engine output with the patented water treatment and dewatering plant. M/V Bore Song operates in the English Channel which is a part of the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA). From January 2015 all ships operating in the SECA area must limit their emissions to correspond to the use of fuel with a sulphur content of less than 0.1%. With the help of the DeltaLangh scrubber M/V Bore Song will meet these requirements.

Langh Ship received on July 17, 2014 final class approval from Germanischer Lloyd for its exhaust gas cleaning system on m/s Laura, a 1996-built a 6,500 DWT general cargo vessel equipped with a 6 MW main engine. “The technology had already been accepted earlier, but now the documentation is also finalized,” said Reino Verosaari, Senior Technical Adviser. Langh Ship is a shipping company that has developed its own closed loop scrubber. Langh Ship Develops Exhaust Gas Scrubber

Although the sulphur limit for ship fuel in the North Sea and Baltic Sea is 1%, Langh Ship’s m/s Laura sails in the area with whatever fuel the charterer has found in Rotterdam, no matter how high its sulphur content. This is possible because the shipping company has equipped the vessel with a closed loop scrubber that emits exhaust gas that is even cleaner than if the fuel had a sulphur content of no more than 0.1%. Environmental regulations in this sulphur emission control area (SECA) have been tightened such that the sulphur limit for fuel will drop to 0.1% at the start of 2015.

Energy Efficiency, Vessel Versatility Central in Future Maritime Transportation

The future dry cargo vessel must be able to adjust quickly to changing transportation needs. The Finnish industrial production structure is anticipated to change and therefore maritime transportation ought to be tighter integrated to production chains. The cargo ship must be versatile and flexible as the transportation needs and cargo types may change within short time intervals. In light of energy efficiency, LNG is considered the best near future marine fuel alternative. These results are presented in three individual Master´s thesis produced at Aalto University. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the Finnish international maritime transport volume development and change factors of the industrial and operational environment, an optimal future vessel concept was established.

ISO Tank Containers Equipped for Hook Lifting

Product: Cradle Tweendecks Patent for Langh Ship

In the invention devised by Langh Ship, steel coils are transported on tweendecks that are equipped with integrated cradles. The method was granted a Finnish patent in 2001 and it has now passed the European Patent Office's inspection, which ascertained that the innovation's novelty, inventiveness and industrial applicability meet the requirements of the European Patent Convention. The invention thus received a European patent, which can be registered in all countries signatory to the European Patent Agreement. Cradle tweendecks facilitate steel coil loading, shipment and unloading at the port of destination. The system even enables fully automated cargo handling in the port and it can be used to optimize vessel stability, reduce cargo damage and fuel consumption.

Innovative tweendeck Patented in U.S.

After thorough examination, Langh Ship’s invention was also acknowledged in the USA. The tweendeck method has previously been granted a European patent, as well as patents e.g. in Taiwan and South Africa. The company expects to receive further patents from many countries where patent office procedures take a longer time. ”This transportation method has also proved efficient in practice. GL Celebrates 140th Anniversary in New York

Commemorating its 140th anniversary, Germanischer Lloyd celebrated with a gathering in New York. A collection of dignitaries, representatives of shipowners, shipyards, supply industry and administrations of the U.S. maritime area convened at the esteemed New York Yacht Club. In addition, from Nor-Shipping, GL reported that the fleet management program GL ShipManager has its first international clients. Finnish shipping company Oy Langh Ship and Danish company Transmarine Management have entrusted Ms Logistik Systeme, a Germanischer Lloyd Group company, with the implementation of the GL ShipManager in their fleets.
