Master Marine Signs Six Towboats

Master Marine, Inc. has signed Six (6) towboats and has laid the keels for the first two vessels. All Six (6) vessels will be 67’ x 28’ Entech Designs, LLC Sub. M compliant towboats. The first two will be working for Osage Marine Services, Inc., St. Louis, MO. with the rest operating in the lower Mississippi River system for an undisclosed customer. Hise, the third towboat in a series of four newbuilds for Illinois-based inland operator Waterfront Services Co.The 67’ x 28’ boat is set up with 10,400 gallons of fuel, 4,359 gallons of potable water and 9,500 gallons of ballast water along with providing a maximum 7’ 9” working draft.Each vessel will be powered by a pair of Laborde Products, Inc. Thordon to Eqip New Class of Towboat

Thordon Bearings, of Burlington, Ont., has received an order to supply four comprehensive shipsets of stern gear for a new class of towboat.The four boats are being built by U.S. shipyard Master Marine of Bayou La Batre, Ala., for Waterfront Services, based in of Cairo, Ill.. As I write this article I am flying back to my home base in Canada from the 42nd annual Interferry conference in Split, Croatia. Interferry is an outstanding conference full of dedicated and passionate ferry operators and those who serve the industry. One presentation was delivered by Captain John Wright, a Master Mariner who has spent his career in the maritime industry in a variety of roles including vessel master, marine superintendent, chief executive and general manager. All of his roles have had a focus on safety and cultural change.

Final Marquette Z-drive Towboat from Master Marine

In December, Marquette Transportation Co. took delivery of a new 2,000-hp Z-drive towboat from Master Marine, Inc., Bayou La Batre, Ala. The 78'x 34’x11' St. Matthias was designed by Entech Designs, La. for Marquette’s river division, based in Paducah, Ky. The vessel features increased crew capacity of nine personnel in five staterooms with 3.5 bathrooms. The steel-hulled St. Matthias is powered by a pair of Thompson Power Systems Caterpillar C32 Tier 3 1,000-hp engines at 1,800 rpm connected to ZF Marine ZF AT 5111WM-FP Z-drives with 1,650 mm (65") four-bladed propellers in nozzles.

The boats will be set up with 10,400 gallons of fuel, 4,359 gallons of potable water and 9,500 gallons of ballast water along with providing a maximum 7’-9” working draft. All four fleet boats will be working in the Cairo fleeting area for Waterfront Services and CGB Enterprises.

Master Marine Begins Building Its Next Towboat Series

Master Marine said it has laid the first keel with a contract signed in September for four 67’ x 28’ fleet boats. Each boat will be powered by a pair of S6R2-Y3MPTAW Mitsubishi 803 HP tier III diesel marine engines to be operated at 1,400 RPM coupled to Twin Disc 5321 gears. The boats will be set up with 10,400 gallons of fuel, 4,359 gallons of potable water and 9,500 gallons of ballast water along with providing a maximum 7’-9” working draft.    All four fleet boats will be working in the Cairo fleeting area for Waterfront Services and CGB Enterprises.    The first vessel will be delivered and in service the summer of 2017, with additional vessels to follow every three months.

7th Z-drive Towboat from Master Marine

In February, Marquette Transportation Co. took delivery of a new 2,000-hp Z-drive towboat from Master Marine, Inc., Bayou La Batre, Alabama. The 78'x 34’x11' St. Phillip was designed by Entech & Associates, for Marquette’s Gulf-Inland division, based in Harahan, La. The steel-hulled St. Phillip is powered by a pair of Thompson Power Systems Caterpillar C32 Tier 3 1,000-hp engines at 1,800 rpm connected to ZF Marine ZF AT 5111WM-FP Z-drives with 1,650 mm (65") 4-bladed propellers in nozzles. The package gives the boat a running speed of 10 knots with a loaded draft of 8’. For ship’s service power the towboat is outfitted with a pair of Kennedy Engine John Deere 4045AFM85 Tier 3 generator drive engines each driving an 80-kW Marathon Mariner generators.

Aberdeen Harbor Names Harbor Master, Marine Manager

Aberdeen Harbor Board said it has completed the restructuring of its Marine Operations Department with the internal appointment of Captain Jeff Gaskin as new Harbor Master and Alexandra McIntosh as Marine Manager. Gaskin, formerly the Harbor’s Marine Superintendent, has been appointed Harbor Master following the retirement of Captain Ray Shaw. Gaskin has 26 years’ experience within the maritime sector. He started his career as a cadet with Louis Dreyfus Shipping in 1990 and enjoyed spells with both PNTL and Cunard before ending his seagoing career with Vector Offshore in Aberdeen.
