Kuhn Joins Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

Jennifer Kuhn of Seattle, Wash. has joined the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD as a shipwright apprentice. Prior to joining CBMM, Kuhn earned her applied science degree from Seattle Central Community College’s marine carpentry program and her BA in fine arts and education from Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md. Through work with Seattle Shipwrights, Kuhn helped repair and restore a variety of boats including longliners, commercial tugboats and the 54-ft 1930s Stevens-built Sea Dog.

Green Joins Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

Joe Green of Portland, Ore. has joined the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, Md. as a shipwright apprentice. With an associate’s degree in wooden boat building from the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building in Port Hadlock, Washington, Green will primarily work on the restoration of the Museum’s bugeye, the Edna E. Hansen of FV Northwestern Comes to CBMM

Edgar Hansen of the fishing vessel Northwestern—as featured on Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch," is coming to St. Michaels, MD and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum on Sunday, August 14 for the 2nd annual Watermen’s Appreciation Day. Hansen agreed to attend the event after learning of some of the parallels both Alaskan fisherman and the Chesapeake’s watermen are facing. “I was floored when Edgar personally returned my phone call,” said Talbot County Watermen’s Association’s event coordinator, Lisa Gowe.

Tug Delaware’s Restoration Underway at CBMM

In recognition of her upcoming centennial, the tug Delaware is now being restored to her 1912 appearance in full public view at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland. CBMM Presents Working Waterfront Speaker Series

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD begins a new speaker series entitled “Working Waterfront” on Thursday, November 1, with later sessions on Friday, November 16 and Thursday, November 29. Held in the Van Lennep Auditorium along the museum’s waterfront campus, the series welcomes CBMM members and the general public, with pre-registration needed. From 6-8pm on Thursday, November 1, “Working Waterfront: Delaware” gives participants an in-depth look at the museum’s 1912 river tug, Delaware. Now celebrating her centennial, the Delaware was built in Bethel, DE, and is one of the last survivors of Bethel’s great age of wooden boatbuilding.

The engineering consulting firm, Noise Control Engineering has just received a subcontract from Friede-Goldman Halter for the engineering and acoustical design services on NOAA's new Fisheries Research Vessel, the FRV-40. The ship will be designed to quietly perform fish stock assessment studies in the open ocean. According to Mr. When completed the FRV-40 will be one of the most sophisticated and quietest vessels of its type. Noise Control Engineering or NCE will be a key participant in the detail design of the vessel along with Halter Marine's Engineering office in Gulfport, Mississippi. NCE will be preparing numerous acoustic design studies and analysis. The firm is responsible for noise control treatment recommendations and their design.

CBMM Opens New Tugboat Exhibit April 21

“Push and Pull: Life on Chesapeake Tugboats,” opens as a new exhibit on Saturday, April 21 in the Steamboat Building of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD. The Chesapeake is a highway for tugs and barges, and for the large ships aided by tugs in port. The exhibit explores the lives of the men and women who work on these tugboats and the variety of ways tugs are used around the Chesapeake. Torqueedo Sweeps Electric Motor Race

Torqeedo recently won first, second and third places in the 13th annual Wye Island Electric Boat Challenge in St. Michaels, Maryland. This is the second time Torqeedo-powered boats have swept the 24-mile, electric motor-only race. In all the years of the race, any boat with a Torqeedo motor has always finished the marathon and this year was no exception. All Torqeedo-powered vessels crossed the finish line after completing the circumnavigation of Wye Island. This year five boats were powered by Torqeedo motors.

Protecting Worker Health during Oil Spill Cleanup

The U.S. Coast Guard Federal on Scene Coordinator for the BP Deepwater Horizon response and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding concerning worker safety and health issues related to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response in the Gulf of Mexico. The MOU solidifies the close working relationship between the Coast Guard and OSHA and establishes a specific mechanism for coordination between the Deepwater Horizon FOSC and OSHA. OSHA and the FOSC recognize the importance of close cooperation among all agencies that have responsibilities during the oil cleanup efforts. The MOU furthers joint efforts to monitor compliance with safety standards and to protect workers.

New Manhattan Sailing School

Offshore Sailing School has signed an agreement with Liberty Landing NYC at Hudson River Park's Pier 25 in Manhattan's Tribeca area. The New York sailing school will provide sailing lessons and sailing courses for area residents and visitors starting May 15, 2012 at this new location. A long time tenant of Liberty Landing Marina in Liberty State Park on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River, Offshore Sailing School brings sailing lessons for adults, teens and youngsters to lower Manhattan with plans to expand with a sailing club and community sailing offers. Courses offered in the initial stages are the three-day and five-day Learn to Sail courses. Performance Sailing courses will also be available, as well as two-hour sailing lessons.

Passenger Ferries to Sail From Baltimore to Eastern Shore

Maryland’s far Eastern Shore may soon be a quick trip from Baltimore, thanks to a ferry being developed by Maritime Applied Physics Corporation and A. James Clark School of Engineering researchers through the Maryland Industrial Partnerships Program. The plane-like boat, which could be in service year-round as early as summer 2007, will fly passengers 18 miles over the water from Rock Hall to Baltimore or back for potential shopping trips, coastal touring, evening dinners, Orioles games, cultural events, and commuting to work. “Since the steamship days the Eastern Shore has held a certain allure for Baltimoreans,” said P.A.M. Schaller, Director of Economic Development for Kent County. “Rock Hall has the flavor of a waterman’s town. Nearby Chestertown has loads of 18th century architecture.

Since it’s Friday, I thought I’d review some of the basic numbers of the response and talk a little bit about some strategic issues regarding the skimmers which are becoming increasingly important in this response as it spreads out (inaudible). Be glad to answer any questions you may have for me at that point. Just to summarize where we’re at on this Friday regarding people—about 25,000 are on the ground down there. This has become the largest oil spill response in our nation’s history.
