Austal USA celebrated the opening of its new San Diego waterfront ship repair facility.The shipyard, located adjacent to Naval Base San Diego, will provide full-service repair, maintenance and modernization services for small surface combatants, unmanned and autonomous vessels, and auxiliary ships.Since finalizing an agreement for the property over a year ago, Austal USA has invested more than $100 million in facility upgrades and a new floating dry dock to transform the facility. The 15-acre site now provides 678 ft. of improved San Diego Bay shoreline, 80,000 sq. ft.

General Dynamics NASSCO has been awarded a $24.1 million contract by the U.S. Navy for Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) sustainment execution in support of LCS' home-ported in or visiting San Diego. General Dynamics NASSCO is a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD). Under the contract, General Dynamics NASSCO will plan, furnish material and provide support and facilities to maintain and modernize twelve LCS-class ships. This contract covers both variants, Freedom and Independence. These ships are fast, agile, focused-mission platforms designed for operation in near-shore environments and capable of open-ocean operation. BAE Systems announced it will invest approximately $100 million to expand drydocking capabilities at its San Diego shipyard. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. With this modification, Electric Boat will continue operating the New England Maintenance Manpower Initiative (NEMMI) at the submarine base. The U.S. Navy awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat two contract modifications worth a total value of $16.8 million to perform nuclear and nonnuclear maintenance work for submarines homeported at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. Under the first contract, valued at $8.8 million, Electric Boat will continue to operate the Nuclear Regional Maintenance Department (NRMD) at the submarine base. The company will provide project management, planning, training and nuclear services to support maintenance, modernization and repairs.

Vigor Industrial announced today that it has renamed two of the company’s subsidiaries. U.S. Fab, Vigor’s fabrication and shipbuilding subsidiary, is now Vigor Fab. The contract includes options which, if exercised and fully funded by the Navy, would bring the total value of the contract to $371.6 million and extend the performance period through 2016. Vigor today announced its plan to acquire Alaska Ship and Drydock Inc. (ASD), further consolidating the business of ship repair on the U.S. West Coast. ASD intends to transition its business and assets to Vigor pending approval of the transfer of ownership by the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA), the owner of the Ketchikan Shipyard where ASD is based. BAE Systems has appointed Bill Clifford as president of its Ship Repair business, effective April 1, 2008. Clifford will succeed Al Krekich, who will retire March 31, 2008, after serving as Ship Repair’s president for the past 10 years. As president, Clifford will lead the operation and grow the business, which provides ship maintenance and modernization services to U.S. Navy, government and commercial customers from shipyards in Norfolk, San Diego, San Francisco and Hawaii. Ship Repair also includes the Maritime Engineering & Services business area, headquartered in San Diego. Clifford has been with the company since 2004, when he served as president and general manager of Hawaii Shipyards, Inc., a United Defense Industries (UDI), Inc. company.

BAE Systems has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command to overhaul and drydock the USNS Leroy Grumman (T-AO 195). The cumulative value of the contract could reach nearly $8 million if all options are exercised. The work will take place at BAE Systems Ship Repair in Norfolk and is expected to be completed by March 2007. As part of the 60-day overhaul package, BAE Systems' work will focus on inspection of oil tanks and spaces, engine room repairs and refurbishment, underwater hull cleaning and preservation, as well as installation and replacement of various devices aboard the vessel. Electric Boat, Groton, Conn., is being awarded a $10,991,000 modification (P00038) to previously awarded contract (N00140-02-C-K009) for intermediate and depot level overhaul, repair and modernization services for Naval Submarine Support Facility New London, Groton, Conn. Work will be performed in Groton, Conn., and work is expected to be completed by August 2006. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
