Great Lakes Dredge & Dock's 1Q Profit, Revenue Rise

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation reported a first-quarter net income of 11.1 million in the first quarter of 2022 an increase compared to first-quarter 2021 income of $8.8 million.Revenue for the quarter was $194.3 million, an increase of $16.7 million from the first quarter of 2021. The higher revenue in the first quarter of 2022 was due to higher domestic capital and coastal protection revenue, offset partially by a decrease in revenue from maintenance dredging, rivers and lakes…

Oil Traders Chase Storage Space in World Awash with Fuel

Swiss Utility in Talks to Buy LNG from Canada's Goldboro Project

Axpo, a Swiss utility and energy trader, said on Thursday it was in talks for a 10-year supply deal with a Canadian company planning to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal.A sales and purchase agreement would boost the chances that Pieridae Energy would decide to build the C$10 billion ($7.6 billion) Goldboro project, which would be the first LNG export terminal on Canada's East Coast.Canada is rich in oil and gas but has yet to export major shipments of LNG to Asia from its West Coast or across the Atlantic from its East Coast."Under the term sheet with Pieridae Energy, Axpo will purchase LNG from Train 2 of the Goldboro liquefaction facility and sell it across Europe…

Coast Guard Plucks Sailors from Icy Annapolis Waters

Four people were rescued from frigid waters off Annapolis, Maryland, on Sunday after more than a dozen sailboats capsized during a race held in rough, windy weather, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The Severn Sailing Association reported that 22 people had fallen into the water off 15 small sailboats during a race on Sunday afternoon, the Coast Guard said in a statement. Rescue teams from the Coast Guard's Maryland-National Capital Region, the Maryland State Police, Anne Arundel County Fire Rescue and Maryland Natural Resources Police all responded. Port of Providence TIGER Project Crompleted

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administrator Paul “Chip” Jaenichen today joined Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo and Senator Jack Reed, along with state and local officials, to christen a new crane barge, marking the completion of a nearly $20 million project that substantially enhances cargo handling capabilities at the Port of Providence. Climate Change Link to Extreme Weather Easier to Gauge - U.S. report

Scientists are better able to measure how climate change may cause extreme weather such as droughts, heat waves and heavy rain, but research does not clearly tie wildfires, tornadoes and hurricanes to global warming, the top U.S. scientific organization said on Friday. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine said in a 144-page report that a host of factors could be behind weather events, including normal variations and atmospheric circulation. Extreme events are harder to explain, since they are rare and data are limited, said the honorary group chartered by Congress to perform studies for the federal government.

Twin Disc Sells Distribution Territories to Great Lakes Power

Great Lakes Power has acquired distribution rights to sell and service Twin Disc products previously supported by Twin Disc Southeast, effective September 25, 2015. As part of the approximately $4 million deal, Great Lakes Power, a longstanding Twin Disc distributor currently serving the mid-Atlantic and northeastern United States, has purchased certain inventory and operational assets from Twin Disc Southeast and will continue to operate facilities previously used by Twin Disc Southeast including locations in Jacksonville, Tampa and Miami, Fla. as well as the newest location in Beaufort, N.C. In February of this year, Great Lakes Power completed a similar transaction by acquiring the assets and distribution rights from Twin Disc Mid-Atlantic for approximately $1 million.

Bollinger Delivers 12th USCG Fast Response Cutter

Bollinger Shipyards LLC has delivered the Isaac Mayo, the United States Coast Guard’s (USCG) 12th Fast Response Cutter (FRC) on January 13, 2015 in Key West, Florida. The vessel is scheduled to be commissioned in March 2015. The 154 foot patrol craft Isaac Mayo is the 12th vessel in the Coast Guard's Sentinel-class FRC program. To build the vessel, Bollinger used an in-service parent craft design based on the Damen Stan Patrol Boat 4708. According to the builder, the ship has a flank speed of 28 knots…

US Ferries Are Safer, but Regulatory Burdens Grow

In recent years, ferries have been in the spotlight, in part because of growing mass transit needs and increased road congestion, but also because of concerns about the deadly South Korean ferry sinking last April. We asked Captain Terri Bernstein, the Passenger Vessel Association’s 2014 President, about the industry’s status in the United States. Based in Alexandria, VA, the PVA has over 500 member companies. Ferries are safer, especially since 9/11, but regulatory requirements have swelled and can be onerous, Bernstein said. She’s the owner of BB Riverboats, Inc.

U.S. companies continue to land lucrative contracts with domestic and foreign customers for vessels that are designed or specially customized to meet defense, police and anti-piracy needs. Governments here and abroad, meanwhile, continue to cut budgets. Many of the security craft to be delivered this year are built to save energy, reduce emissions and reach higher speeds and greater cruising ranges than their predecessors. They have the latest tracking and communications systems. And a few new vessels are remotely operated.

Moose Boats delivered a new M1-44 Catamaran Patrol Boat to Bridgeport Police Department on Long Island Sound. The M1-44 all-aluminum catamaran is powered by twin Cummins QSC8.3 600hp marine turbo diesel engines coupled via TwinDisc MG5075SC transmissions to twin Hamilton 322 water-jets with Hamilton Blue Arrow Controls. Salvaging Sandy

When Hurricane Sandy swept across the Caribbean, Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States in late October 2012, the Category 2 storm eventually became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record. Certainly, it ranks as one of the most costly and destructive. Estimates of losses due to damage and business interruption are still being compiled but are expected to exceed $70 billion. Hundreds died as a result of the ferocious storm. In the United States, at least 24 states were impacted, but the damage was particularly severe in New Jersey and New York. The storm surge slammed into New York City on October 29, flooding streets, tunnels and subways and cut power to a large swath of customers in the tri-state area.

U.S. Vessels Ready to Transport Fuel to Northeast: AMP

Washington, D.C. – With concerns that refinery closures in the Northeast may cause gas prices to increase further, the American Maritime Partnership (AMP) notified the Administration that American vessels have ample capacity to transport petroleum to the region from the Gulf of Mexico. AMP’s letter comes after a federal analysis omitted key data about the domestic shipping industry’s overall capacity. “Today, there is more than adequate American tank vessel capacity to address any additional refinery closures,” the AMP Board of Directors wrote in a letter to Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. The Northeastern United States faces possible changes in its petroleum markets because of potential refinery closures.

Avtron Upgrades Icebreakers

The U.S. Coast Guard recently awarded Avtron Industrial Automation a contract to upgrade the main propulsion system on its fleet of 9 WTGB Ice Breaking Tugs with the Avtron ADD-32 DMG Drive System. To date, Avtron has upgraded the electrical propulsion system for the Neah Bay in Cleveland, OH, the Bristol Bay in Detroit, MI, and now the Penobscot Bay in Bayonne, NJ. The WTGBs are 140’ diesel-electric vessels which operate on the Great Lakes and the Northeastern United States. The ice breaking mission of the vessels requires them to be operational at all times.

Vessels: K-Sea Acquires ITB Unit

K-Sea Transportation Partners has acquired the 140,000 barrel capacity double-hulled barge S/R New York and the 8,000 horsepower tugboat S/R Everett. This integrated tug barge unit, built in 2000, had been leased by SeaRiver Maritime, Inc., a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corporation, from a financial institution. The purchase price of $34 million was financed using available cash and $25 million in borrowings under a new term loan. The new equipment will begin working immediately and is expected to be accretive to K-Sea's distributable cash flow. K-Sea has also signed a new multi-year contract with SeaRiver to utilize the unit in Exxon Mobil's petroleum products transportation in the Northeast United States. The barge has been renamed DBL 140 and the tugboat has been renamed Lincoln Sea.

MMA Honors Alumni

Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) honored its best and brightest at a ceremony held in early November. The college formally recognized alumni success and achievement, student academic success, and faculty achievement at its annual Celebration of Achievement on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006. Included among those recognized were three outstanding college alumni. All were inducted into the college’s Wall of Honor. Initiated in 1997, the college’s Wall of Honor was created to recognize alumni, who, through achievements in professional and civic life, have brought honor to themselves and to Maine Maritime Academy. Cutter DEPENDABLE Completes Patrol off the Northeast Coast of the U.S.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter DEPENDABLE will be returning to homeport, Cape May, New Jersey, on Monday, July 28, 2003, following a 56-day deployment. DEPENDABLE, a 210 foot Medium Endurance Cutter, has a 72-person crew and spends over 185 days a year deployed from the Hague line off the Northeastern United States to the Caribbean. Hornbeck to Spend $265M on New Boats

Hornbeck Offshore Services, Inc. announced a new vessel construction programs for each of its two business segments, making it the company's fourth OSV newbuild program and second tug and tank barge (TTB) newbuild program. Hornbeck is seeking bids from domestic shipyards for the two programs. Based on internal estimates, the incremental cost of the two expansion programs is expected to be approximately $265 million in the aggregate.
