A new oil spill response device capable of cleaning up spills in arctic conditions has been launched in an effort to bolster Norway’s spill preparedness.The new device, dubbed Arctic FoxTail, is a winterized version of H. Henriksen’s standard Foxtail vertical adhesion band (VAB) skimmer, which filters out oil spills from the seawater using its sorbent mops. The U.S. Coast Guard has lifted its safety zone on the Neches River Tuesday as oil spill cleanup activities near their conclusion. The response began after a pipeline at the Jefferson Energy Terminal released an estimated 880 gallons of Eagle Ford crude oil into the river Saturday afternoon, leading to the river’s closure from the Kansas City Southern Railroad Bridge to the north end of the Standolind Anchorage, near light151. Debunkering efforts continue for the TS Taipei, which grounded off Shimen, Taiwan last month, causing a large bunker spill after the vessel fractured in the middle. Minister of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) Chen Jian-yu said he hopes to see the removal of all remaining containers on the deck of the T.S. Taipei ship this week itself. The cargo ship was carrying 20 tonnes of potassium perchlorate, 19.5 tonnes of fats, 18.2 tonnes of toluene, 11 tonnes of paint, 8.5 tonnes of corrosive liquids, and 6 tonnes of flammable lubricants, and several empty containers from among the total of 617 boxes on board the ship fell into the sea. The oil spill cleanup work is likely to take another month to complete. The oil spill has polluted 20.3 kilometers of shoreline.

Cleanup continues in response to an oil spill in the Houston Ship Channel that resulted in the release of approximately 168,000 gallons of bunker fuel oil. On March 22, 2014, the M/V Summer Wind and Kirby Barge 27706 collided in the Houston Ship Channel in the vicinity LT 26 near the "Texas City Y", the Houston-Galveston Port Community said in an announcement. The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) announced that Unified Command is working closely with the Vessel Traffic Service, paired with assessments of the Houston Ship Channel, to determine when partial vessel traffic can resume.

The U.S. Coast Guard is overseeing the cleanup of an estimated 200 gallons of crude oil Friday after a valve on a pipe leaked at the Sunoco Logistics Terminal Facility in Fort Mifflin Thursday. Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay watchstanders received notification of the spill at approximately 2 p.m. Thursday after the National Response Center relayed that a pipe broke and an estimated 2,000 gallons of crude oil discharged onto a parking lot at Sunoco Logistics. Additionally, it was reported approximately 200 gallons spilled into a drain, which leads to the Delaware River. After further investigation, it was estimated 50 gallons of oil went into the water.

Culminating a three-year effort, Marine Pollution Control, in conjunction with the Coast Guard’s Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E) program, will participate in an Oil-in-Ice Exercise in St. Ignace, MI, the week of February 18. Eastern Canada Response Corporation (ECRC) selected BRP's Evinrude E-TEC engines to repower its 79-boat fleet. The CA$1.5 million contract was awarded to BRP based on Evinrude outboards' low cost of ownership and high environmental standards. ECRC operates six centres in eastern Canada and provides marine oil spill response services in all navigable waters east of the Rocky Mountains. Boats powered by the 30 hp to 225 hp Evinrude E-TEC engines will be at the forefront of chemical and oil spill cleanup throughout Canada and the United States.

Marcon International, Inc. of Coupeville, Washington reported the purchase by a private East Coast operator of the U.S. flag utility boat Sarina (ex-Tern) from Olympic Tug and Barge, Inc. of Seattle, Wash. The vessel was originally built as a U.S. Coast Guard WLI class inland buoy tender in 1969 at CG shipyard in Curtis Bay, Baltimore, Md. and rebuilt in 1994 and 1996 to her present configuration. She is currently fitted out as a small general utility and supply vessel and has performed oil spill cleanup duties upon the waters of the lower Columbia River and its tributaries.
