Hunterston Port Reveals Masterplan

Insurance Gaps Leave Shipping Exposed to Cyber Attacks

Shipping companies grappling with the threat of cyber attacks on vessels are finding insurance policies often fall short, officials involved in both industries say, a risk that could feed through into global prices. Digitalisation means electricity networks, emergency services, industry and agriculture are all vulnerable to hacking by criminal gangs for extortion or, for political reasons, by militant groups or foreign states.
Briggs Marine Turnover up 6%
Briggs Marine & Environmental Services has published its new accounts for the year ending March 2016 at Companies House, which show an annual increase in turnover to £66m. The company, which supplies a range of services throughout the marine industry, has increased its turnover by £4 million from the previous year, as a result of increased activity in the repair of subsea cables in the offshore renewable energy industry. Tighter margins in variable markets saw the Group’s operating profits show a slight decrease from £6m in the previous year to £5.4m for the year ending March 2016, with return on capital employed falling from 25% to 23%.

Seatruck Reports Growth on Irish Sea
Freight ferry company Seatruck is reporting growth of more than 18pc in 2016 consolidating its position as the fastest growing operator on the Irish Sea, as more hauliers switch to its services. Seatruck chief executive Alistair Eagles said freight levels are also up 30pc in November 2016 compared to November last year. He further forecast winning even more business from hauliers switching ferry operators, following the opening of the new £125 million ($155 mln) Bay Gateway relief road on October 31.

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with major UK ports operator, Peel Ports, who own the Port of Liverpool, as the latter gears up for the formal opening of its Liverpool2 container terminal in early November. BG Freight Line Orders Four Containerships
BG Freight Line, a fully owned subsidiary of Peel Ports Group, is to receive new tailor-made short sea container feeder vessels optimized for the company’s Irish Sea Hub services. The new class of ‘green’ vessels has been developed by BG Freight Line operation with ARKON Shipping as project initiator/commercial manager, technical managers Jüngerhans Maritime Services and designers CIMC ORIC. BG Freight Line will take delivery of four sister vessels under long-term charter after delivery from China’s Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard, with them expected to enter service during 2018.

UK container traffic will see more muted growth than expected a few months ago, at least in the short term, says Drewry. Marine-based commissioning work is now underway at Liverpool2, with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) committing vessel support to Peel Ports to help make the trial a success. Berthing and marine trials began last week with MV MSC Nederland and will be followed by a variety of cargo handling tests throughout July and August. As well as 3,007 TEU MV MSC Nederland, four other MSC vessels will be used during the trials – 2,668 TEU MV MSC Santhya, 2,768 TEU MV MSC Koroni, 4,340 TEU MV MSC Sandra and 4,355 TEU MV MSC Alyssa.

CMA CGM Doubles Liverpool Feeder Capacity
CMA CGM has increased the capacity on its West Coast Feeder service via Liverpool to 2200 TEU from 900 TEU. M.V. Nicolas Delmas began calling at the port in April. The service begins in Antwerp and also calls at Greenock, Belfast, Dublin and Le Havre.
