Montrose Port Takes Delivery of its First Newbuild Pilot Boat

Montrose Port Authority at the end of 2022 welcomed into service its first ever purpose-built pilot boat, South Esk.The new £800,000 vessel was constructed by Safehaven Marine, in Youghal, Ireland and completed its sea trials at the Port of Cork before making its way to Montrose by traveling across the Irish Sea to Oban, around the top of Scotland and down the East coast.The Interceptor 48 model launch is the first newbuild pilot boat in Montrose’s 200-year trust port history…

Ireland: Large Fire at Port of Cork Under Control

Firefighters have brought a large fire at the southern Irish port of Cork under control and no casualties were reported, the port authority, which recently started offering more "Brexit-proof" direct sailings to mainland Europe, said on Saturday.The blaze began in a grain store at a deepwater berth used for freight services, the port authority said shortly after 0930 GMT, urging local residents to keep all doors and windows shut and remain indoors.It said just over an hour later that the fire was under control."Emergency services remain on site to monitor the area.

Cork, Amsterdam Ports to Collaborate

The Port of Cork in Ireland has signed a collaboration agreement with the Port of Amsterdam International, a deal which will see both ports look to strengthen each other.Ireland is an important trading partner for the Netherlands. In 2017, the country exported over 5.5 billion euros of goods to the Netherlands. This makes the Netherlands the sixth biggest export destination for Irish goods.In the same year, Ireland imported over 3.5 billion euros worth of goods from the Netherlands. This chiefly consisted of pharmaceuticals, machines, and transport equipment.The Port of Cork as well as Port of Amsterdam wishes to share their expertise and experience in a number of areas in order to promote trade between their ports.

Port Business: Is Bigger Better?

Every port is different. But the harbor masters meeting in Vancouver this week are finding they all have much in common. “We all are dealing with issues of efficiency, the environment, and security and how to develop our ports to best accommodate our customers today and in the future,” says Capt. Kevin Richardson, president of the International Harbour Masters’ Association (IHMA) and a retired chief harbor master at the Port of Dover in the U.K. The congress is being hosted by the Port of Vancouver, Canada’s largest port, and the third largest in North America by tonnage.

Maersk Opens Direct Cork-Cuba Service

Danish shipping giant Maersk — the world’s largest container carrier — began its first ever connection between northern European ports and Cuba last Friday, promising the fastest freight transit times between Europe and the Cuban port of Mariel. Port of Cork has scored a major coup in landing a potentially lucrative spot on the first direct freight shipping service from northern Europe to Cuba since economic sanctions were removed on the Caribbean country, reports Irish Examiner. The move will enable Irish companies to capitalise on an expected boom resulting from the normalisation of relationships between the United States and Havana. The service is an expansion of the shipping company’s existing CRX Latin American route, which connects Mexico and Costa Rica directly with Europe.

Bureau Veritas Issues ISPO Certificate to Port of Cork

Classification society Bureau Veritas has issued its first certificate under the ISPO (International Standard for Maritime Pilot Organizations) standard of best practice for pilots and pilot organizations to the Pilotage Authority, Port of Cork, Ireland. The ISPO certification covers the Pilotage services and Vessel Traffic Management System. The ISPO is an accessible industry specific standard, managed by a group of users, that improves safety and quality and provides transparency to shipowners and stakeholders on pilotage standards.

EU Funds Port Move

The Port of Cork has received almost EUR13 million in EU funds for the Euro100 million redevelopment of Ringaskiddy, as part of plans to modernize the port. The funding comes under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and is primarily aimed at creating jobs and boosting growth. Confirmation that the funding is forthcoming follows the decision by An Bord Pleanala to grant planning permission for a multi-million euro upgrade at Ringaskiddy. The Port recently received planning permission to move its container facilities from Tivoli to Ringaskiddy — a decision which will allow it to expand its business over the coming years. Port of Cork Reports Growth

Ireland's Port of Cork’s container terminals at Tivoli and Ringaskiddy showed “exceptional growth” last year, recording a 13% increase on 2013 and handling in excess of 10m tonnes of cargo shows the annual results. Total traffic through the Port of Cork and Bantry Bay Port Company in 2014 reached a total of 10.1 million tonnes. Following the transfer of Bantry Bay Harbour to the Port of Cork Company in January 2014, both Ports performed well in the circumstances with some sectors performing strongly while others experienced a decline due to a favorable harvest for Irish farmers in the summer and autumn of 2014 when compared to 2013.

Port of Cork to Upgrade Cobh Cruise Terminal

The Port of Cork will invest over €1.5 million in upgrading facilities at Cobh Cruise Terminal, Ireland’s only dedicated cruise berth, with the installation of a number of high load mooring bollards at the east and west end of the Cobh Cruise Berth which will enable larger ships to be berthed. The work which will commence before the end of January is expected to be completed by April 2015 in time to welcome the first cruise call on 24th April. Port of Cork Winter Seabed Plough Program

A project that has allowed the Port of Cork to precisely monitor and record the winter program of seabed ploughing in real time for the first ever time is being delivered by Succorfish in partnership with Irish marine communication specialists SEA-Tech. The exercise, which is being carried out aboard a utility vessel working to lift sediment from the port seabed into the water column and back out to sea, sees live, up-to-the-minute and highly valuable location data transferred back to officials instantly in real time.

Irish Port Hosts UNCTAD Training for Developing Countries

The 'TrainForTrade' Port Training Programme focussing on ‘Modern Port Management’ runs for two weeks in the port. The programme, which sees 28 delegates attending from countries across the globe including Ghana, Indonesia, Maldives, Namibia, South Africa, Pakistan and Tanzania, has been organised by UNCTAD in cooperation with Port of Cork (PoC), Dublin Port Company (DPC), Belfast Harbour Commissioners (BHC), and with the support of Irish Aid. The TrainForTrade programme was set-up to facilitate sustainable economic development in developing and transition countries through training and capacity development and is run by UNCTAD, whose mandate is to work for development-led globalisation, where the development paths are sustainable and inclusive.

Port of Cork Uses Castrol’s Environmentally Responsible Lubricants

Port of Cork has turned to Castrol Marine to further reduce its environmental footprint and protect the sensitive waters in which it operates. Castrol Marine’s Bio Range of environmentally-responsible lubricants are designed for use throughout a vessel where leakage presents a risk. The agreements cover the use of Castrol BioBar 46, a high specification, environmentally responsible hydraulic oil, which is being used in two key Port of Cork vessels, the Multi-cat work boat M.V. Denis Murphy and the tug boat M.V. Gerry O’Sullivan. M.V. Denis Murphy, one of four vessels of its kind in Ireland, is in high demand throughout Ireland and the UK. Its basic functions include towing, plough dredging, buoy handling and anchor handling.

Nathans Auditor of Swansea-Cork Ferry Ops

Ireland-based accountant and consultant Moore Stephens Nathans has been appointed auditor to the group of companies recently set up under the name Fastnet Line to operate a new passenger and freight ferry link between Swansea in Wales and Cork in Ireland. The service is scheduled to begin on March 1, 2010, providing the first crossing since 2006. The cessation of the old Swansea-Cork ferry operation in 2006 caused an estimated annual loss of $51.7 to businesses in Ireland, which relied on the service to bring large numbers of UK and EU tourists into the south-west of the country.
