McDonough Launch First of Seven Spud Barges

McDonough Marine Service has launched the first in a series of seven new inland spud barges. The spud barges are being constructed at Yager Marine Industries in Owensboro, Kentucky and range from 110’ to 140’ in length. The first of the series to be launched is the KS 4011 with the dimensions of 110’ x 40’ x 7’6”. The barge was designed with a boxed stern that provides maximum flotation during crane operations. This design provides operators an opportunity to work safely in the inland marine construction environment, McDonough said.

Conrad Awarded Ferry Contract and Other Contracts Totaling $36.6m

Conrad Industries, Inc. announced the award of a contract for the construction of a ferry, and the signing of contracts for the construction of sixteen barges and a major ferry repair, with a total value of $36.6 million. The Texas Department of Transportation awarded Conrad a contract for the construction of a 264’x66’x15’6” passenger/vehicle ferry scheduled for delivery during 2009 with a contract price of $22.5 million. The ferry will transport up to 70 cars and work the Galveston terminal. Also, The Puerto Rico and Municipal Islands Maritime Transportation Authority has executed a contract for a dry dock inspection and general repairs to Motor Vessel Culebra II, a 500 passenger, 150’ x 28’ aluminum hull.

Cenac Marine to Christen New Vessel, Donate Barge

A ceremony will be held July 29 at Cenac Marine Services headquarters in, Houma, La. To commemorate the christening of its newest vessel, M/V Quincey Cenac, as well as the company’s donation of a spud barge to Terrebonne Parish. The newest addition to Cenac’s growing fleet, M/V Quincey Cenac is the 24th and final vessel in its most recent series. Cenac Marine Services said a new series of vessels is in development for the near future. The donated spud barge will be utilized by the parish to transport equipment for levee conservation and upkeep.

The Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corp. (SENESCO) will build a 165 ft. dredge barge that will have the ability to walk along harbor floors. Boasting a trio of vertical spuds operated by winches, the forward spud will allow the barge to move without tug assistance. The shipbuilding company formed the agreement with Sterling Equipment of East Boston, Mass.; the project's completion is scheduled for April 2001. A subsidiary of the Cashman Group - a major New England contractor - Sterling's contract is the 10th barge project for SENESCO.

Hercules Offshore, Inc. has appointed Larry Francois as Chief Executive Officer and President of Delta Towing effective August 20. Nass Marine Services, a marine division of the Nass Group, handed over a competed project that involved the fabrication of a new deck cargo barge to Ocean Diving & Marine Services that is owned and operated by Mr. Samir Engineer in the Kingdom. Not Just A Frame for Resolve Towing

Resolve Towing and Salvage, Inc. a Division of Resolve Marine Group Inc. (RMG) has constructed a 400-ton "A" frame. This unit, with a 100-ft. boom and a lift capacity of 400 tons, is now the largest "A" frame in this region. The "A" Frame is currently mounted on an RMG owned, U.S. Flagged ABS loadline spud barge. Immediately upon being put into service, the A-Frame completed its' first mission, the removal of the derelict vessel Red Diamond in Northern Florida. Both the barge and "A" frame will be stationed in the Southeastern U.S. and Caribbean.

Conrad Industries Reports Profit, New Orders in Annual Results

Conrad Industries, Inc. has announced its fourth quarter and twelve months 2011 results and the addition of new business during the first quarter totaling $61.8 million. New business added during the first quarter of 2012 includes the signing of new contracts and sales of stock barges which brings estimated current backlog to approximately $68.7 million, compared to $47.1 million at December 31, 2011, $112.3 million at March 31, 2011, and $89.5 million at December 31, 2010. Conrad Industries Announces 2011 Results

Conrad Industries Inc. announced its fourth-quarter and twelve months 2011 results and the addition of new business during the first quarter totaling $61.8 million. For the quarter ended December 31, 2011, Conrad had net income of $6.8 million and earnings per diluted share of $1.09, compared to net income of $3.3 million and earnings per diluted share of $0.51 during the fourth quarter of 2010. The Company had net income of $19.2 million and earnings per diluted share of $3.01 for the twelve months ended December 31, 2011, compared to net income of $10.3 million and earnings per diluted share of $1.60 for the twelve months ended December 31, 2010.

Conrad Industries Announces Award of Ferry Contract

Morgan City, La.-based Conrad Industries Inc., announced it has been awarded a contract to build a ferry for the State of Texas and numerous other contracts totaling $36.6 million. The Texas Department of Transportation awarded Conrad the contract for a 264-foot-long passenger/vehicle ferry for the Galveston, Texas, terminal. The $22.5 million vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2009. Conrad also announced it will build 11 120-foot deck barges, three spud barges and two crane barges for four different customers. In addition, Conrad will conduct drydock inspection and general repairs to the M/V Culebra II, a 500-passenger aluminum-hull vessel operated by the Puerto Rico and Municipal Islands Maritime Transportation Authority.

Safety Board Determines Cause of 2006 Barge Fire

The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the failure of Athena Construction to require its crews to pin mooring spuds securely in place on its barges led to an unintentional release of one of the spuds. NTSB Issues Report on Construction Barge Fire

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued the report of its investigation into the fatal explosion and fire on an uninspected construction barge on October 12, 2006 on West Cote Blanche Bay, La. The incident resulted from the unexpected release of a mooring spud. Two construction barges were being pushed by a towboat across the bay. One of the raised mooring spuds on one of the barges suddenly dropped (possibly due to a failure of the winch brake mechanism). The spud struck a submerged high-pressure natural gas pipeline, rupturing the pipeline and causing an explosion and fire that engulfed the towing vessel and both barges. The master and four barge workers were killed, two crewmembers survived, and one crewmember is missing.

Pushing It: LeBeouf Bros. Towing

Jon Gonsoulin is not one to rest on his legacy. Jon’s grandfather, Earl, began working with the LeBeouf brothers back in 1946 and soon bought into the company. In time, Earl and his two sons, Richard and Jerry, were able to buy the LeBeouf brothers' shares. Earl turned over the helms to his sons in the 1970's. From that time forward, the two brothers continued to strengthen and consolidate the company’s position. In 2005, Richard “Dickie” Gonsoulin purchased his brother's interest in the company. Today the company is solely owned by Dickie with Jon taking an ever more active role in forging the company’s present and future growth. The current fleet is comprised of 22 push boats including the recently delivered M/V Merle Gonsoulin and the M/V Sydney Ann.

Donjon Provides Diving and Salvage Services to Dredge

Donjon Marine Co., Inc. uses its salvage and related emergency response service equipment, the 1,000-ton capacity derrick barge Chesapeake 1000 and 400-ton capacity derrick barge Columbia New York to supply heavy lift, diving and related salvage services to the dredge New York which sustained considerable damage after being struck by another vessel while in Newark Bay, New Jersey in January. Donjon Marine, Co., Inc., was contracted by owners of the 200-ft.-long excavator style dredge New York to supply heavy lift, diving and related salvage services after the dredge was struck by the 669-ft.

Ready for the Worst

Most every company knows it should have a plan to deal with catastrophe. That’s especially true for shipyards and vessel owners who often ply their trade in hurricane zones, where weather can rip apart a lifetime of work overnight, make confetti out of assets, and leave disarray in its wake. Emergency plans can be simple or complex, depending on the needs of a specific business. There are a number of resources to help business owners create customized plans, including online templates, detailed guidelines and model documents. A company’s insurance agent and carrier can also serve as useful resources for businesses trying to determine what should be in a plan, and how to best position themselves to recover quickly if disaster strikes. A plan by itself, however, is not enough.
