Chinese Sub near Disputed Islands Stokes Tension with Japan

Japan’s defense minister criticized China on Monday for sailing an advanced stealthy nuclear submarine close to disputed islands claimed by Japan and China, saying the action had stoked tension. The submarine, which Japan detected in the East China Sea, was a 110 meter-long Shang-class vessel, which is able to dive deeper and for longer than older boats and is armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, according to Japan’s Ministry of Defence. “Operating a submerged submarine close to another country’s territory goes against the norms of international rules…

Surface & Subsea Unmanned Autonomous Vessel to Debut

Ocean Aero has designed a 'game-changing' ruggedized surface & sub-surface vessel: the "Submaran", powered by wind and solar, capable of several months at sea that can be deployed from land, sea or air. The designers will present it at the Blue Tech & Blue Economy Summit, November 7-8, 2013. The "Submaran" will be delivered both as a system for purchase and as a part of a contracted System as a Service (SaaS) fleet of data gathering vessels that customers need not purchase or manage.

Chevron Vessel Sinks off Nigeria Coast

A support vessel capsized and sank during a tanker loading operation at a Single Mooring Buoy roughly 30 kilometers offshore in Nigeria’s Escravos area. Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), operator of the NNPC/CNL Joint Venture, has confirmed that the vessel Jascon #4 belonging to its contractor, West African Ventures Limited, capsized and sank early Sunday, May 26. A Chevron statement said that initial reports indicated that heavy ocean swells caused the Jascon #4 to capsize while performing tension tow operations of the tanker at SBM #3. Emergency Response has commenced, including Search and Rescue operation with surface vessels, helicopters and divers. SAIC: $2m DARPA Contract for AUSV

Science Applications International  Corporation (SAIC) [NYSE: SAI] announced today it was awarded a prime contract by  the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to design a concept for a new autonomous unmanned surface vessel to help counter the modern threat submarine. The contract has a six month period of performance and a total value of $2 million. SAIC is one of six companies selected for Phase I of the DARPA Program. Officially named the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) Phase I, the program involves a broad range of activities which include: concept exploration; technology surveys; wargaming; risk assessment; and production of a concept design, construction plan and preliminary performance specification.

Northrop Demonstrate 'Silent Watch' System

A team of Northrop Grumman Corporation engineers recently successfully demonstrated the capability of the company's Silent Watch Electro-Optical Infrared (EO/IR) Distributed Aperture System (DAS) to enable a surface vessel to sense and track threats. The maritime applications of the EO/DAS involved the strategic placement of multiple EO/IR sensors onboard the Sperry Star III research vessel, a Northrop Grumman Naval and Marine Systems surface ship test platform. The test demonstration proved that, when employed at sea, high resolution, near-real-time images generated by Silent Watch can be displayed and relayed to friendly forces. The Silent Watch EO/DAS was originally designed and developed by Northrop Grumman to provide 360-degree situational awareness for F-35 pilots.

Marport and Harbor Wing Establish Alliance

Marport and Harbor Wing Technologies, Inc., a developer of unique wind-powered Autonomous Unmanned Surface Vessels (AUSVs), announced a strategic alliance agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, Marport and Harbor Wing will explore strategies and opportunities for integrating their capabilities to perform military and homeland defense missions and assist commercial companies in offshore oil, gas and minerals exploration. To initiate these operations, Marport will install and deploy its Software Defined Sonar (SDS) technology platform on Harbor Wing’s advanced prototype HWT X-1 AUSV operating from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Unmanned Surface Vessel – Second by Textron Systems

Textron Systems Advanced Systems, an operating unit of Textron Systems, a Textron Inc. company, announce that its second Fleet-class Common Unmanned Surface Vessel (CUSV) completed a successful in-water demonstration in New Orleans following vessel modifications at the Textron Marine & Land Systems (TM&LS) shipyard. The two Textron Systems operating units recently collaborated on vessel performance enhancements and are preparing to participate in additional capabilities demonstrations for the United States Navy. The team also is pursuing vessel contracts with the U.S. Navy, international navies and other government agencies in the U.S. and overseas.

USV Deployed for 22 Days in South China Sea

A Singapore based designer and manufacturer of unmanned surface vessels (USVs) said one of its vehicles was recently deployed for more than three weeks in the South China Sea. The 22-day continuous deployment marks the longest ever for Zycraft’s wholly developed Vigilant class 17-meter independent unmanned surface vessel (IUSV), which traveled a total distance of 1,900 nautical miles South China Sea. Command and control of the IUSV was done using satellite communications from Singapore at Zycraft’s command center.

Recovery of Remaining Oil from Solar Days to Take Several Days

The Italian sub-sea construction service provider will begin offloading oil from the sunken tanker Solar 1 on March 14. Although Sonsub International expects the offloading to be an easy job, they assured that they have contingency plans in the event of another oil spill. Officials expect the offloading operations to last for about 25 days, but not shorter than 20 days, subject however to the amount of bunker fuel remaining in the ten cargo holds of Solar 1. It is estimated that by April 14, they will already be demobilizing their equipment. It's not that we want to stay any longer, we just want to ensure that each tank is empty of oil, he added. Sonsub will be bringing in Allied Shield for the operation, which will be conducted round the clock.

ONR Continues ACCeSS Research Funding

The Atlantic Center for the Innovative Design and Control of Small Ships (ACCeSS) at Stevens Institute of Technology announced major funding for the next five years worth $4.5m by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) as part of its National Naval Responsibility – Naval Engineering (NNR-NE) program. ACCeSS is a consortium of both University and Industry partners including: the U.S. Naval Academy, Naval Post Graduate School, University College London; Florida Atlantic University; Webb Institute; Lockheed Martin; AMSEC LLC (Northrop-Grumman); VT Shipbuilding and Band-Lavis Associates. Sonsub Awarded Patent

Sonsub, Inc. has been awarded patent no. 6,350,085 B1 for a cable deployment system and method that is ideally suited to efficiently install 4D seismic cables on the seafloor. This patent allows precise placement of the long seismic cables needed to form large-scale 4D arrays and incorporates a built-in anchor for the second end of the cable as well as an armored riser cable to the surface. The system incorporates direct connection of the seismic cable to the riser cable to the surface and does not require an electrical or fiberoptic swivel. The system is designed to operate with a single ROV, which is used to set the first end of the cable and then monitors the payout of the cable and controls the location of the cable as it is deployed.

Eco Marine Power (EMP) today revealed details of its Aquarius Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) and announced that it will begin work related to the construction of a prototype. The Aquarius USV is being developed as a cost-effective unmanned surface vessel (USV) and will incorporate a number of technologies from EMP and its strategic partners. These technologies include marine computer systems and lightweight flexible marine solar panels. The Aquarius USV will be powered by a solar-electric hybrid marine power solution which will also feature a solar panel array designed by EMP.

Saab, Damen Jointly Pursue Submarine Contracts

Swedish defense and security company Saab has partnered with Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards to explore future opportunities in the international submarine market, signing an exclusive teaming agreement to work together in pursuit of the potential Walrus-class submarine replacement program for the Netherlands. Additionally, Saab and Damen will also explore ways in which they might bid jointly on other submarine procurement programs. Unmanned US Navy ASW Vessel Contract for SAIC

Science Applications International (SAIC) awarded US Navy DARPA contract for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Unmanned Vessel. The contract by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) program phases two through four to design, build and test a new prototype unmanned autonomous surface vessel. The DARPA ACTUV program aims to develop an unmanned autonomous surface vessel with the ability to track a quiet diesel-electric submarine overtly for months over thousands of kilometers, with minimal human input. SAIC provided conceptual design services in phase one of the program, creating an innovative wave piercing trimaran solution.

Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems Awarded Service Order in Peru

Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, a leading global system supplier for submarines and surface vessels, has received a service order worth around €40 million from the Peruvian naval shipyard SIMA. A key component of the order is the provision of consulting during the planning and realization of extensive modernization work on four HDW 209/1200 class submarines over a period of seven years. Among other things thyssenkrupp Marine Systems will perform engineering and technical services such as cutting and welding on the submarines and will make specialists available to provide local support.

Saab to Overhaul Swedish Navy Submarine

Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) to overhaul the Swedish Navy submarine HMS Södermanland. The order, valued at SEK121 million, is part of the letter of intent announced on June 9, 2014 regarding Swedish armed forces’ underwater capabilities. According to a statement from Saab, the overhaul includes the necessary measures to ensure the submarine's operational availability. One provision of the contract is to define future needs for maintenance, which could result in additional work being contracted separately during the period.

This Day in U.S. Coast Guard History – November 22

1906-At the second International Radio Telegraphic Convention, which was held in Berlin, the attendees agreed to adopt the wireless signal "SOS" as the internationally recognized signal for distress at sea. Their thinking was that three dots, three dashes and three dots could not be misinterpreted. 1953-A great boon to ocean navigation for aircraft surface vessels was the completion of four new LORAN stations in the Far East. The stations were built at Mikayo Jima, Ryuku Islands; Bataan and Cantanduanes Islands, Philippines; and Anguar, Palau Island in the Carolinas chain. Now replaced by the more accurate LORAN-C network, these stations on sparsely-populated, remote and typhoon-battered islands.

Cubic Awarded Navy LCS Simulator Training Contracts

Cubic Corporation has received 3 prime contracts from Naval Air Warfare CenterTraining Systems Division. The contracts are for the development of instructor-led (synchronous) and instructor facilitated self-paced (asynchronous) courseware in support of the Littoral Combat Ship Train to Qualify (T2Q) and Train to Certify (T2C) shore-based training requirements for both variants of the Littoral Combat Ship, and for the Mission Packages utilized on both ships. The Littoral Combat Ship program represents the United States Navy’s most advanced designs, capabilities and technologies to create the next generation of surface vessels that can operate in dangerous shallow and near-shore environments.
