Propulsion Profile: US Navy's Tier 4 Tugs
Built by Dakota Creek Industries in Anacortes, Wash., the first of the U.S. Navy's new fleet of six YT 808-class tugs was delivered in October after completing the last construction phase. Measuring 90 feet long and 38 feet 3 inches wide, the YT 808 vessel is powered by twin Cat 3512E marine engines, each rated at 1,810 horsepower. PPG, MTU Power Bay Area's New Ferries
San Francisco Bay Area ferry operator Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) is expanding its fleet with new vessels in order to meet large ridership increases. By 2035, WETA expects to add a total of 44 new vessels to meet anticipated demand, which is expected to increase by as much as 900 percent.As part of its larger fleet expansion strategy, WETA currently has three new ferries on order at the Dakota Creek Industries shipyard in Anacortes, Wash. that are due to enter service next year.

Notwithstanding the lingering offshore energy downturn, there were plenty of bright spots for North American shipyards in 2017. If a hull was delivered in 2017, we took a look at it, with several areas as a focus for inclusion into this edition. For starters, it is always exciting when a domestic yard delivers a vessel – or multiple vessels, for that matter – to foreign buyers. We can compete in a foreign arena; on price, quality and on-time delivery. This year was no different. No less important is the environmental footprint of a vessel, and there was plenty to report on from that angle in the past 12 months. The domestic waterfront is indeed getting greener and cleaner.
DSC Delivers Its First Tier 4 Final Dredge
In February 2017, DSC Dredge, based in Reserve, La., delivered its first-ever dredge equipped with a Tier 4 Final C32 ACERT Caterpillar engine to a minerals company located in the U.S. The Shark Class Dredge features an 18-inch hull-mounted dredge pump and 300 hp cutter drive assembly, and has a dredging depth capability of 56 feet. DSC supplied stainless steel hydraulic fittings and used anti-corrosion building practices, as the dredge will be working in a corrosive environment.
Harley Marine Christens Earl W Redd
Harley Marine Services christened its newest tractor tug Earl W Redd, officially welcoming her to the fleet on Friday, February 10. Built at Diversified Marine of Portland, Ore., the Earl W Redd features twin Cat 3516 Tier 4 Final main engines that will each produce 2,675 horsepower at 1,600 rpm. Each of the engines is paired with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) after treatment system that uses a urea-based solution to reduce NOx contained in diesel exhaust down to nitrogen and water vapor.
Harley Marine Welcomes First US EPA Tier 4 Tractor Tug
Harley Marine Services accepted delivery of its newest tractor tug, Earl W Redd, a first-of-its-kind workboat equipped with Caterpillar's Tier 4 emissions technology. The vessel enters the Harley fleet as one of the most efficient and environmentally conscious vessels in the world, exceeding the toughest marine EPA standards. Built at Diversified Marine of Portland, Ore., the Earl W Redd measures 120 feet by 35 feet, with a loaded draft of 19 feet 3 inches. The tug features twin Cat 3516 Tier 4 Final main engines that will each produce 2,675 horsepower at 1,600 rpm.
Cat EPA Tier 4 Engines for McAllister Tug Duo
Horizon Shipbuilding is in the process of installing the first production EPA Tier 4 certified units of its 3516E EPA CAT Marine engines, on a pair of tugs it is building for McAllister Towing & Transportation Co., Inc. The pair of 100 foot azimuth stern-drive (ASD) escort and rescue tugs will each be powered by two CAT Marine 3516E EPA Tier 4 engines rated at 3,386bhp, supported by three CAT C7.1 EPA Tier 3 gensets rated at 118ekW and two CAT C18 EPA Tier 3 803bhp fire pump engines (Fi-Fi). The equipment was delivered to Horizon Shipbuilding by Cat Marine dealers Thompson Cat and Foley Cat. FMT Invests $3.7 Mln into its Terminals
Federal Marine Terminals (FMT) has announced $3.7 million in investments, including $1.7 million for a new crane, $1.3 million in new forklifts, and $700,000 in other equipment and gear for seven of its 12 terminals. According to FMT, these investments will enable the group to make strides in production while reducing emissions. The new crane, a Kobelco CK2750G model, to be delivered this summer to the company’s terminal in the Port of Cleveland, will feature a Tier 4 Final engine, the newest generation of motors for this type of equipment, and is expected to achieve 90 percent reduction of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter emissions when compared with the Tier 3 engines.
Volvo Penta Launches New Tier 4 Open Power Units
Volvo Penta has introduced a new line of EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV PowerPac industrial open power units for OEM manufacturers. Volvo Penta is initially deploying the PowerPac systems in the Americas, and will roll out the products for industrial customers worldwide through the company’s global distribution channels. The PowerPac systems come equipped with a complete set of preinstalled components including all Tier 4F/Stage IV after-treatment components, engine cooling system (radiator and CAC), air and fuel filters and mounting brackets.

Kalmar to Deliver Straddle Carriers for Maher's NJ Terminal
Kalmar has received a large order for 27 straddle carriers from its long-term customer Maher Terminals LLC in Elizabeth, NJ. The order has been booked into Cargotec's 2015 third quarter order intake and deliveries are expected to be completed during the spring 2016. Maher Terminals is both renewing and expanding their straddle carrier fleet, now with environmentally responsible diesel-electric power utilizing U.S. EPA-mandated Tier 4 Final emission controls. The Kalmar ESC350 diesel-electric straddle carriers are rated for 50 metric tons (mt) with twin 20 feet containers or 40 mt with single containers. Included also in these straddle carriers are special features to improve productivity and performance in the challenging operating conditions of the customer.
Terex Liftace 5-31 Reach Stacker Delivered to Port Blyth
Terex Port Solutions (TPS) delivered a Terex Liftace 5-31 reach stacker to the north-east England based terminal, Port of Blyth, UK. The machine became operational at the south harbour of the North Sea port in December 2015. The cost effective, service friendly and ergonomic reach stacker will operate the twice weekly container service and stack yard. The machine will also be used for client port training purposes. With a wheelbase of 6,200 mm, the Terex Liftace 5-31 reach stacker offers a maximum load capacity of 45 t in the first container row and 31 t in the second container row. It features travel speeds up to 25 km/h and a maximum lifting speed of 0.45 m/s. The engine of the Liftace 5-31 reach stacker conforms to the EU Stage IV (EPA Tier 4 final) emission standard.
Emissions Control Takes Center Stage for Workboat Engines
Today’s workboat operators must navigate increasingly stringent IMO and EPA environmental and emissions regulations in and around ports and rivers. As the drama unfolds, selective catalytic reduction or SCR is emerging as a viable vehicle to do just that. At the same time, fears about space constraints for smaller vessels and the hassle of carrying and handing urea for these systems are rapidly evaporating, as well. Two different firms – both familiar names in propulsion markets – have embraced SCR as the way forward. Both, Tenneco and Volvo Penta, rely on deep roots in these markets and significant experience in the effort to reduce emissions from engines.
