Virginia (SSN 774) Class Submarine Program Achieves Multiple Milestones
The Virginia Class Submarine Program (VCSP) achieved Initial Operating Capability, when USS Virginia (SSN 774)
successfully completed her Post-Shakedown Availability (PSA) and began regular fleet service.
Upon completion of Initial Operational Test and Evaluation, also known
as Operational Evaluation, and certification by the Type Commander in
the spring of 2009, VCSP will reach Full Operational Capability.
The Virginia class is the first post-Cold War submarine and is designed
to support multiple missions, from the littorals to the open ocean, and
is a key asset in the war on terror. Some of these missions include
precision strike operations; operational support to Special Operations
Forces; and gather intelligence, perform surveillance, and conduct
reconnaissance missions.
VCSP will also celebrate two important milestones over a two-week span
this spring. First, North Carolina's (SSN 777) Christening at Northrop
Grumman Newport News, in Newport News, Va. on Apr. 21, and then Hawaii's
(SSN 775) Commissioning at the Submarine Base, New London in New London,
Conn., on May 5.
