Northrop Grumman Corporation was recognized for its commitment to protecting and preserving the environment in San Diego. Continental Maritime, a subsidiary of the company's Newport News sector, was selected by the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) as Southern California's Facility of the Year in the large industry category. In an award letter to Northrop Grumman, John Boyd, CWEA awards chairman, said the CWEA was impressed with Continental Maritime's knowledgeable and committed environmental staff and its innovative process controls to eliminate stormwater discharge and waste into the San Diego Bay. "Organizations such as yours provide an example of how a joint commitment by management and employees to effective waste management yields results," he said. Continental Maritime began efforts in 1997 to eliminate stormwater discharges by installing a collection system to divert all runoff from the San Diego Bay. All stormwater discharges were eliminated in 2001. In 2005 Continental Maritime became the nation's first zero-discharge shipyard by eliminating all discharges. Operating under a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit, Continental Maritime eliminated all point-source discharges, including stormwater, into San Diego Bay.
