APM Terminals orders mega cranes from Cargotec for its Port of Rotterdam containership terminal

Cargotec will supply eight Kalmar super quay cranes and two Kalmar barge quay cranes to the APM Terminals Maasvlakte II expansion project.

The cranes have an outreach of 25 containers, are semi automated and have twin lift and tandem lift capability.

Dutch financial daily estimates the investments in the cranes to amount to some €125 million, 25% of total investments which include some €125 million for stacking cranes and smaller terminal equipment and €100 million for buildings and terminal pavement.

The cranes will be equipped with various additional features including second trolley (not common) and remote control (an industry first) which combined are expected to lead to significant improvements in container handling productivity and safety.

The two barge quay cranes will have an outreach of 36 meters.

The cranes are being engineered in Cargotec’s Rotterdam office and manufactured in China for delivery between December 2013 and December 2014.
