Unique Ship Prototype in Gothenburg
The 49.2 ft long ship prototype Stena Airmax was named in Gothenburg. The prototype is part of a project in which an air cushion is being tested to investigate to what extent it reduces the friction between the hull and the water, thus also reducing fuel consumption and emissions of large tankers in the future. T&T Marine Salvage Responds to Oil Spill
T&T Marine Salvage helped clean up an oil spill after a collision between an oil tanker and a barge spilled 450,000 gallons of crude oil into the Sabine-Neches Waterway. T&T Marine Salvage responded to the oil spill by mobilizing 50 personnel. 20,000 ft of spill boom, a 1,500-bbl skimming vessel, response vessels, portable skimmers, eight portable fire pumps and other equipment. “T&T Marine cleanup operations were performed around the clock,” said Vice President Kevin Teichman.
Singapores ASL Builds Big and Complex
The application of diesel electric technology gives a remarkable flexibility to vessels in the larger offshore market. In November Singapores ASL Shipyard completed work on the 295-ft by 72-ft diving support vessel Mermaid Asiana. Destined for service in Mermaids extensive Thai fleet, the DP2 classed vessel has redundancies well beyond the basics. With three Kawasaki bow thrusters the vessel could maintain DP2 status even if one thruster was down.

Cosco Delivers Italian ATB
Early in May the COSCO (Zhoushan) Shipyard will deliver one of two articulated tug barge units on order from their Italian customer Ilva Servizi Marittimi S.p.A. The Italian-flagged tug, named Corona Australe, is fitted with a three-point Matsui Corp coupling system. Designed by Shanghai Bestway Marine Engineering Design Co. Ltd, the 146 ft by 55 ft vessel is powered by a pair of 4080 kW Wartsila engines. Each engine will also drive a three-phase shaft generator.

Botany Bay Ship Pilot Training
Botany Bay was replicated for an Australian-first marine emergency training exercise that Sydney Pilot Service commissioned for four of its pilots. The wholly owned subsidiary of Sydney Ports Corporation recently conducted the new commercial Advanced Manned Model Pilot Training program at the Australian Ship Handling Centre at Port Ash.
