Dean James Wins Best Poster Prize at Ocean Business
Chelsea's Technical Director, Dr. John Attridge, presented the prize for best poster to Dean James (University of Oxford) at the Microfluidics and Microsensor Sensor Technology for Oceanographic and Environmental Science Applications Workshop held during Ocean Business at NOC Southampton. The Challenger Society hosted this fascinated one-day workshop which focused on developments in microfluidics and microsensor technology for oceanographic and environmental science applications.
New, New York Harbor Current Meter
NOAA uses data from a new current meter in New York harbor operated by New Jersey’s Stevens Institute of Technology. The system provides enhanced real-time information to mariners travelling through the nation’s second busiest port. The Stevens current meter measures the direction, speed, and volume of ocean currents in the harbor’s navigation channels, north of the Narrows between Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Skipper: New Support Tools for Acoustic Products
Skipper released the new support tool for all technicians serving acoustic products. The Skipper ETT985 is a combined echo sounder simulator, transducer tester and NMEA tester, in a single handheld unit. This tool allows the technician to test both the acoustical functions of the Echo Sounder and Transducers. The ETT985 has a built-in rechargeable battery. The simulator will measure the transmitted pulse and replying with either the same pulse or a user defined pulse.

ABB Wins $26m Marine Repeat Order
ABB won a $26m order to supply electrical power and propulsion systems for two next generation ‘Ramform’ vessels, capable of three-dimensional (3D) seismic data acquisition for deep sea resource exploration. The ships will be constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and delivered in 2015 to Norway’s Petroleum Geo-Services ASA (PGS), a leading company in marine seismic and reservoir data acquisition, processing and analysis/interpretation services.
400 Officers Certified in Navmaster ECDIS
While staying on board ship and continuing with their duties, over 400 navigating officers have earned formal certification in Navmaster ECDIS. The training course launched by PC Maritime nearly a year ago meets STCW requirements and standards set out by the Nautical Institute for ECDIS familiarization. Available on standalone DVD, the PC Maritime package uses text, voiceover and video and requires users to carry out actions just as they would on Navmaster ECDIS.

Krill Systems Inc. have installed their Vessel Fuel Measurement and Monitoring Systems (VFMMS) in 6 NOAA Fisheries survey vessels. Installations on NOAA Ship Bell M.
