Synapsis INS for Jumbo Newbuilds
The German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz has been awarded the contract for the supply of advanced Integrated Navigations Systems of their Synapsis Bridge Control series to new Heavy Lift Carriers for Dutch company Jumbo Shipping. The demanding new vessels are being built at Brodosplit shipyard in Split, Croatia. Jumbo has ordered two Heavy Lift Carriers at Brodosplit with delivery dates in 2013, and holds an option for a third newbuild.
Northern Sea Route Ice-free Soon?
The Northern Passage, the sea route along the North coast of Russia, is expected to be free of ice early again this summer. The forecast was made by sea ice physicists of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association based on a series of measurement flights over the Laptev Sea, a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean. Amongs experts the shelf sea is known as an “ice factory” of Arctic sea ice.
SIGMA Warship Trials a Success
The 98 meters long SIGMA class frigate, the third frigate built by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding for the Royal Moroccan Navy, left Vlissingen earlier for her sea acceptance trials (SAT) in the North Sea. Pirates Beware – US Navy to Test Robotic Drones
Navy unmanned aircraft will be able to distinguish small pirate boats from other vessels when an Office of Naval Research (ONR)-funded sensor starts airborne tests this summer, officials said. Called the Multi-Mode Sensor Seeker (MMSS), the sensor is a mix of high-definition cameras, mid-wave infrared sensors and laser-radar (LADAR) technology. It will be placed on a robotic helicopter called Fire Scout.
