US Navy Awards $22mln Waterfront Inspection Deal

The U.S. Navy has awarded a five-year, $22 million contract to Appledore Marine Engineering, a specialist focusing exclusively on the inspection and design of marine infrastructure, for waterfront inspection services.

 

The contract covers Region 4, which includes the Northwest, Alaska, and all Pacific U.S. Territories including Guam, Wake Island, American Samoa, Midway Island and others.

 

“Our task with this contract is to assure operational readiness for the naval facilities in this vast region,” said Noah Elwood, President of Appledore Marine Engineering. “The scope of work will require the full complement of our engineering services.” 

 

Appledore’s team of in-house engineer-divers will perform underwater and above water inspections along with material condition assessments on the installations waterfront structures including dry docks, piers, off-shore towers, wharves, moorings, etc.  “Our job is to evaluate the condition of these facilities, their structural and load capacity, and to provide structural engineering and design services in support of the Navy’s mission to sustain, restore, modernize and construct various projects throughout Region 4,” Elwood said.

 

A task order under this agreement will be to conduct waterfront investigations for an icon of the Pacific Northwest; the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, the Pacific Northwest's largest naval shore facility. 

 

“Puget Sound’s mission is wide ranging,” Elwood said. “The shipyard has the capabilities to overhaul, repair and deactivate all types and sizes of ships for the navy while also serving as home port for a nuclear aircraft carrier, two nuclear cruisers and three, fleet support ships. We’ll conduct investigations of the shipyard’s infrastructure including its six dry dock entrances, an extensive pier system, numerous moorings, seawalls, bulkheads; the work there will be extensive.”

 

According to Elwood, this contract will not only enable Appledore to grow as a company, but also invest in the security of the mission of the shipyard and in the local economy associated with this strategic shipyard. “Puget Sound is one of the largest industrial employers in the state of Washington,” said Elwood. “We do not underestimate the importance and impact of our work there. It’s integral to the functioning of this shipyard which has a direct link to the health the state’s economy.” 

 

Appledore Marine Engineering said it has a long standing relationship with the U. S. Navy, having served this branch of the armed forces for over a decade. The company was chosen from a field of qualified engineering firms after an extensive review process.
