Seafarers 'Bill of Rights' In Force Today
Tuesday 20, August 2013 is the date when the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006, comes into force for ships flagged in those states that signed up to it exactly one year ago. More states have since signed the convention, and the MLC will take effect for them one year on from the date they signed. Currently, 47 member states of the International Labour Organization (ILO) have signed up to the MLC, representing more than 75 percent of the world’s gross tonnage of ships.

Transocean's update summary includes new contracts, significant changes to existing contracts and changes in estimated planned out-of-service time of 15 or more days since July 17, 2013. The total value of new contracts since the July 17, 2013 fleet status report is approximately $2.5 billion. Estimated 2013 planned out-of-service time decreased by a net 172 days; estimated 2014 planned out-of-service time increased by a net 119 days.

Drug-busting USCG Cutter 'Legare' Returns to Homeport
The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter 'Legare' returned to their homeport of Portsmouth Monday following an 8-week patrol in the Caribbean Sea in support of the Joint Interagency Task Force South. While patrolling near Puerto Rico in early August, the Legare crew launched their embarked helicopter to locate a go-fast vessel. When the vessel refused to stop as directed by the helicopter crew, they used approved tactics, including disabling fire, to compel the vessel to stop.

Warship Somerset Completes Builder Ingalls' Sea Trials
The amphibious transport dock 'Somerset' (LPD 25), the ninth San Antonio-class ship built at Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division, returns from successful builder's sea trials in the Gulf of Mexico. Ingalls' test and trials team spent three days operating the ship and going through its normal at-sea checklist, which includes more than 200 test events. "We put Somerset through rigorous testing last week," said Mike Duthu, director of Ingalls' LPD Program.

Researchers Return to Queen Anne’s Revenge Site
Many unknown treasures and concretion-encased surprises await researchers on the wreck of Blackbeard’s flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge (QAR), near Beaufort. Part two of this year’s dive season resumed this week, and the plan is to recover artifacts from 60 five-foot by five-foot units by October 31. After nearly 300 years on the sea floor, the artifacts often are locked in a concrete-like crust of sand, shells and marine life that is removed during the conservation process.

Markel Appoints Managing Director in Singapore
Markel International, a specialist insurer with a worldwide product portfolio, appointed Matthew Cannock as Managing Director of Markel International in Singapore. The Monetary Authority of Singapore has approved his appointment as Managing Director and as Principal Officer. Matthew will take up the position at the end of August from Peter Phillips, who has led Markel’s operations in Asia Pacific since 2007.
