WGMA says Lyngso’s retirement effective October 1, 2014.

Born and raised in Denmark and finishing his shipping education including maritime law studies in 1972, Niels Lyngso has been a longtime stalwart for WGMA. Arriving in the United States in 1972 as a management trainee for Olsen & Ugelstad, he has since filled many roles along the collective, domestic waterfront. Lyngso’s maritime career has spanned many decades and still many more roles, including the management of bulk vessels and a long history in liner agency work.

WGMA, a non-profit association the membership of steamship owners, operators, agents along with stevedoring, and terminal companies located in all Texas ports and the Port of Lake Charles, Louisiana, has today grown to over 160 members. Acting through committees appointed from the membership, the West Gulf Maritime Association – among myriad other tasks – negotiates and administers various multiemployer collective bargaining agreements with the International Longshoremen's Association in West Gulf ports.

Lyngso joined the agency community in Houston in 2000 and served as Vice-President of Fillette, Green Shipping Services before joining West Gulf Maritime Association in 2008. Today, he is co-owner of Cimber Transport Corp., and going forward, says he will focus his time between tee times and developing the future of this company in the trucking arena. This week, Mr. Lyngso said, “I have enjoyed being on the WGMA team and working with our members to bring the Association to new and higher levels. The time has come to slow down and focus on family, country club membership  and the future of Cimber Transport Corp.”

As Lyngso steps down, the West Maritime Association now seeks a Director of Maritime Affairs. The position requires extensive maritime experience and inquiries are welcome (in confidence) to Niels Aalund,  Senior Vice President Maritime Affairs, at (713) 715-6424 or [email protected].
