MVeP Phase 2 Seeks Authors
The Marine Vessel Environmental Performance (MVeP) Assessment was presented November 4th, 2010 at the SNAME Annual Meeting. This is the work of SNAME T&R Panel EV-10 previously Ad-hoc Panel 19. Eleanor Nick Kirtley and Tim Leach of the Glosten Associates presented to an audience of about 50. The Glosten Associates also featured MVeP at their booth in the Expo where many conference attendees were able to speak with the presenters and other participants including Matt Winkler, VP of Seaworthy Systems – Roll Royce.
In Phase 1, MVeP developed a checklist of environmental impacts resulting from marine vessels. Each impact can be assessed on its own merit, and the compilation of all assessments makes clear the trade-offs of various measures giving a holistic view of the ship’s performance. Thirty five impacts on the checklist are organized into 4 categories: energy efficiency, air emissions, water emissions, and general measures. The captains for each category are: Mike Gaffney (Alaris), Don Ricciuti (Rolls Royce- Seaworthy), Brian Ackerman (Wartsila), and Chris McKesson (University of New Orleans), respectively. Now in Phase 2, a Performance Assessment Guide is being written for each impact.
With respect to environmental performance the Guide answers “How to achieve?” and “How to measure?” to be best current industry knowledge. The MVeP mission is not to do new research, but to survey the current best practices to provide a Standard Assessment Methodology. The Standard Assessment Methodology has 4 components: Prerequisite, Prescriptive Measures, Quantitative Metric, and Zero Impact.
MVeP is seeking authors, reviewers, and sponsors for the Phase 2 effort to write the 35 Performance Assessment Guides. Thank you to the committed participants thus far from: 1SG Engineering, Alaris, Alaska Tanker Company, Applied Weather Technology, Art Anderson Associates, California Maritime Academy, Coast and Harbor Engineering, Crowley, DNV, Elliot Day Design Group, Foss, FutureShip – GL, GoConsult, Golder, Hamworthy, Herbert Engineering Corp, Holland America Line, Hyde Marine, JS&A Environmental Services, Marine Environmental Associates, MARPOL Training Institute, Maersk, NOAA, Noise Control Engineering, Port of Long Beach, Propulsion Dynamics, Rolls Royce – Seaworthy, Stumbo Associates, Technical University of Denmark, University of New Orleans, and Wartsila.
