Iraqi Port of Basra Container Terminal Opens
NAWAH Port Management (NPM), a business unit of North America Western Asia Holdings (NAWAH), in partnership with the General Company for Ports of Iraq, has launched the first phase of a containerized terminal at Al Maqal Port, also known as the Port of Basra.
The opening ceremony marked the completion of an essential yearlong phase for NAWAH and the modernization project for Al Maqal, culminating in the initiation of commercial operations at the newly containerized Berth 14. This will serve as a 21st century maritime service for the Republic of Iraq to import and export cargo and promote the kind of infrastructure development that will accelerate Iraq’s economic growth.
NPM’s port in downtown Basra also allows customers to receive goods with reduced ground transportation time and associated costs as well as meeting the surging demand of a full spectrum of local and international customers in southern Iraq.
Equipped with brand new equipment such as the elite Liebherr 64-ton mobile harbor crane and reachstacker, NPM’s terminal operations at Al Maqal also feature new container and general cargo yards and reconstructed pier – all of which streamline operations and maximize capability, speed and efficiency.
“Offering container cargo handling less than 50 miles from three of the largest oil fields in Iraq is a strategic differentiator that NAWAH Port Management brings to bear,” said Tom Pritzker, NAWAH’s chairman and co-founder.
