Black Sea Terminal Operator Continues Development Program
NUTEP, a container terminal operator in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, completed the latest phase of its ambitious port development program with the upgrade of its railway facilities there.
The company has removed the original rail lines, constructed a new yard at the rear of the terminal and increased overall block-train capacity at the terminal to 30 trains – about 112 TEU each – a month.
The total length of the railway lines is now more than 4km and, at 425m each, the two new loading sidings allow NUTEP to handle two block-trains a day. Two dedicated rail-stackers are able to handle traffic at both sidings at the same time.
An additional benefit is that terminal storage has been increased by the removal of the old railway lines, bringing the intake capacity up to more than 11,000 TEU.
Last year, Timofey Telyatnik, Chairman of the Board of Directors of NUTEP’s parent company GC “Delo”, announced plans to triple the capacity of the container terminal to accommodate the ongoing growth in the number of containers it handles.
In 2012, NUTEP handled 215,307 TEU, which was 7.6 higher than 2011.
The company is also going to invest in the construction of an extra container berth which will be able to handle ships of up to 6000 TEU and bring the total capacity at NUTEP to 600,000 TEU by early 2016.
NUTEP currently has three berths - 39, 39a and 39b – that provide a total berth length of 754m and serve ro-ro vessels as well as container ships. Customers include the liner services of Maersk, CMA-CGM, Evergreen, Coscon and Admiral Container Lines as well as the regional feeder services of Xpress and EMES.
Novorossiysk is the largest container port in the Black Sea and the principal gateway to Southern Russia. Other GC “Delo” companies also operate from there including Global Container Service (GCS) Ltd, the largest private intermodal and logistics providers in the area and one of Russia’s leading container transport operators.
