The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics, a $15 million contract modification to continue development and production of the Navy’s Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) Block 1B3. General Dynamics will continue to help the Navy enhance its shipboard electronic warfare systems and capabilities, to include providing SEWIP with the ability to detect and identify additional potential threats and provide early warning to combat-systems operators.

“We are leveraging our open architecture approach on the SEWIP program to help the Navy keep pace with the rapid evolution of technology to meet the fleet’s fast-changing mission requirements,” said Michael Tweed-Kent, vice president and general manager General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems’ Mission Integration Systems division. “The SEWIP team will continue to collaborate with the Navy to provide an affordable solution that strengthens mission-critical capabilities.”

SEWIP is an evolutionary acquisition block upgrade program for the U.S. Navy's primary surface ship electronic warfare and anti-ship missile defense system, the AN/SLQ-32 Electronic Warfare suite, which has been installed on naval combatants and auxiliaries since the late 1970s. The SEWIP Block 1B3 upgrades provide a vast improvement to the surface Navy’s anti-ship missile defense by enhancing the early-detection, location, identification and classification capabilities that assist sailors in defending ships from emerging threats.

Since 2003, General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems has partnered with the Navy on the continued evolution of SEWIP through Blocks 1A, 1B1, 1B2 and now 1B3. As systems integrator, General Dynamics’ open business model approach enables the best-in-industry suppliers to provide the Navy with cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions at an affordable cost. For the 1B3 system, Lockheed Martin MST (Syracuse, N.Y.) is supporting General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems as a major subcontractor.
